I absolutely love the transition from him jumping out the window, and the pan over to the doctor. The way the doctor just non-chalantly stands up is so unsettling, because it's not how someone should react to jumping out a window! That gives me a little shiver every time. (We just watched this earlier this week!)
On the subjects of dreams, if you have vivid dreams and you remember them or lucid dreams where you're aware you're dreaming, it changes your relationship with sleep. I've woken up from dreams where I was in the middle of some task or journey and to awaken was disorienting - I woke up feeling like I'd neglected a job or duty, forgotten something important, left something critical behind. It's unsettling to experience dreams as a second reality which you cannot freely access, worlds and identities that belong to you or that you belong to- but can't control. The Twilight Zone captured a lot of the abstract fears and experiences that exist outside our rational selves and that was the best part about it, the primal nature underlying the narratives
I had a much longer explanation on my own lucid dream in the original edit of this video. But due to trying to save time so I can meet my deadline I had to cut it out. Maybe one of these days I will do just a big video about dreams. But I guess it's good this video came first so people will understand my fascination with dreams and dreams in film. Had a dream not too long ago that was one of the most terrifying experiences in my life. 😅 So I atleast plan to write it all out in detail.
@@PolterGibbst yes! Maybe a video essay on the best horror movies about dreams! Nightmare on elm st would probably be most people's first thought but there are so many others! You talking about your dreams and your fascination with them would be a fantastic bonus!
Had many weird experiences when trying to get better at lucid dreaming, some dreams were terrifying, other weird, some were wild to think about. What made me stop trying is when the dreams became frighteningly real. This land is the twilight zone
The ‘it was all a dream’ twist here works better than most because it’s not a case or ‘so nothing happened/mattered other than maybe they learned something’ and instead ‘but it still killed him’. Instead of undermining the story of a man whose imagination is going to kill him because he believes it can, it reinforces it. So it doesn’t feel like a backtrack.
I have suffered from the most violent nightmares since nursery school (kindergarden). I am now 55 years old. For example, in one, a group of terror___sts invaded the kindergarden and began torturing teachers and kids but leaving me free. I was running around trying to free everyone. The smells and visuals are so horrifyingly real. Even now, they continue- I very rarely have an inane dream. So I avoid sleeping. I don't take drugs, just coffee, and am used to getting by on 3 hours a night. Being an artist, it seems ok with everyone that I behave weirdly anyway🙃
It's more like his dreams is telling him when he going to die. Maya represents the secretary, the circus represents the Therapy place, "We been expecting you" is the same words the Sec told him before he enters the room (noticed her voice is a dead give away), the roller coaster represents him laying in that room closing his eyes as the heart attack begins it's process, the kiss of maya or him hanging out with her might be represents his way of just going inside the building where of course the Sec was at. There's so many details you have to look into how things represents one another.
Lucid dreams for me are more fun than weird, growing up whenever i would have a lucid dream i would be flying and as soon as i realize im dreaming i lose that ability but now i can fly as much as i want and go as high as i want.
I think you should rate the unpredictability higher. 1st, I know it does sort of do the weird change when he first falls asleep, but I think it's very likely people would assume this is to represent him falling asleep. 2nd, the shock of him seeing the receptionist and jumping out the window is such a big climax that it really serves to lull watchers into a false sense of finality. The best twists happen when you thought the story was done and done well, but it isn't.
I'll probably have to so what other channels do in the future, and come back to revisit different episodes. Maybe then I'll change my mind on a few things, who knows.
Started rewatching a bunch of twilight zone episodes with some friends right before you started this series. Unfortunately haven’t been able to make time to continue doing so with em so it’s nice to still be able and continue a little with your videos. This was an episode I didn’t appreciate as much before your analysis and realizing just how good it actually is
I'm just glad more people are getting into watching the series, hopefully though yall will be able to continue before long. I can definitely see why this one would be less appreciated now with how common this twist is. But I still love it so much. 😂
my favorite episode/twist is The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street. i know that the red scare metaphor is a little hamfisted, but my dad also really loved that episode despite not really being a political person. i think the episode accidentally makes an interesting point about how our government maliciously interferes with communities to provoke infighting and strife. our government has made Maple Streets all over the world, so to speak.
And this is the one episode I am holding off on covering in this series for a while. I've got it set aside for another special video I've been working on for a while. It was the first episode I ever saw, so it gets extra special treatment.

"Playtest" was running through my head during this. It is also my favorite episode of the series due to the sudden rug pull and the fact that it just left me sitting there staring at my black mirror for half an hour digesting it.
Longest I stayed on was a weekend when I was a kid. From Friday when I got home to Monday when I got home from school I didn't sleep. Bad idea. Was too young to understand what a hallucination was.
Yes I love that one. That one really lulls the audience into a false sense of security and optimism only to slap you hard in the face with the twist right at the end
I'd love to see you cover A Game of Pool. Probably my favorite episode because it's not even somewhat scary. Just two fantastic performances alongside some of the best dialogue in the show.

This must be where Netflix’s Black Mirror got the inspiration for a very similar episode. Edit: clearly left the comment midway through the vid 🤣 great vid brotha.

my fave tz twist is in the one w andorra [samantha stevens mom] or maybe the double-twist of the author and his dictaphone or kafka's 'the room' or robert redford as the dying cop or the painting of the hot day or … i dunno …
Perchance To Dream. I'll be sure to put it in the description just after this. When I was editing I'm pretty sure I only noticed that I said it 1 time when getting the total score for the episode.
Intrusive thoughts are the definition(hyperbole) of your imagination attacking you for no reason My dreams are usually good though they usually end before the climax though, like discovering the cause of the time aliens attacking Earth and why you are the one human who can keep the aliens from going back in time 18:20 for me it's the opposite my dreams last for seconds to minutes at most I do get a whole story in seconds but the experience is only minutes over hours of sleep
Great choice. This twist is lesser known that some of the bigger ones (there was time now, it's a cookbook, etc) but it is so so well executed. Truly flawless episode. I want someone to make a device that only wipes Twilight Zone endings from my brain so I can experience them all over.
Something irrelevant but I couldn't not notice: The doctor's office is same set used in a lot of different films and shows. I am CERTAIN it was used in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I've been enjoying your videos, brought here by your take on the pilot episode and kept here by quality insights! Edited to add: The twin strengths of The Twilight Zone are that the endings are often twists...but they also get to your heart. Sometimes it's with a message; sometimes, it's just sympathy. This episode did "sympathy" so very powerfully.
Not so much of a horror episode but the black mirror episode “shut up and dance” has my favorite twist/ending. As for games, it’s horror in its own way, but it’d have to be spec ops: the line
I usta watch this one and Shadow Play often. They have a darker feel than most episodes. Fantastic storytelling. The more you watch, the more details you notice.
I feel like towards the end it becomes predictable that he's dreaming that's what I was thinking but what I did not expect at all was the fact that he started dreaming in the psychiatrist's office! Honestly really freaking good
That was the coolest thing about The Twilight Zone - it took those real fears (sleeplessness, paranoia, beautiful women) and used them against us😂. It WAS a great episode, brother - thanks for the deep dive!
I thought this was gonna be the amnesia brick episode I went to look for it and can’t find it I think I’m imagining it if someone has a clue what I’m talking about please let me know
Egnh. I feel this episode was kind of mid because there’s so much happening and the “it was all a dream” trope has almost always been a cop out. Not one of the better TZ’s or twists in my opinion.
If I would have been thinking I definitely would have done something for Christmas. But now I'm just trying to make sure I can get a video to wrap up the year without missing it by too much. 😅

Holy fuck this reminded me to rewatch Time Enough at Last, I got chills as a kid when I watched it for the first time
M6 favorite review analysis channel right now ♥️
you said dooby 😂
my fave tz twist is in the one w andorra [samantha stevens mom] or maybe the double-twist of the author and his dictaphone or kafka's 'the room' or robert redford as the dying cop or the painting of the hot day or … i dunno …
😂 I understand the feeling.
Scrolled through the comments and didn't see it mentioned, "Nothing in the Dark" always stuck with me
What's the name of the TZ episode? I didn't hear it in the beginning of the video and didn't see it in the description.
Perchance To Dream.
I'll be sure to put it in the description just after this.
When I was editing I'm pretty sure I only noticed that I said it 1 time when getting the total score for the episode.
Intrusive thoughts are the definition(hyperbole) of your imagination attacking you for no reason
My dreams are usually good though they usually end before the climax though, like discovering the cause of the time aliens attacking Earth and why you are the one human who can keep the aliens from going back in time
18:20 for me it's the opposite my dreams last for seconds to minutes at most
I do get a whole story in seconds but the experience is only minutes over hours of sleep
Twilight Zone inception!
Great choice. This twist is lesser known that some of the bigger ones (there was time now, it's a cookbook, etc) but it is so so well executed. Truly flawless episode. I want someone to make a device that only wipes Twilight Zone endings from my brain so I can experience them all over.
Side note: in Hinduism, the word "Maya" means the illusions that dieties and demons use to destroy humans. ❤
not really a brag but I was awake for over 140 hours one time
You should do Total Recall
Man you GOTTA watch dead of night man!
“Will the real Martian please stand up?” is my favorite.
Love that episode.
I usta watch this one and Shadow Play often. They have a darker feel than most episodes. Fantastic storytelling. The more you watch, the more details you notice.
Maybe they're supposed to be Forced March pills?
I feel like towards the end it becomes predictable that he's dreaming that's what I was thinking but what I did not expect at all was the fact that he started dreaming in the psychiatrist's office! Honestly really freaking good
SOONER!
my favorite twist is from darkwood
Have you seen Inside No 9? Series 2 episode 2 - Cold Call. Thats all I'm going to tell you. Either that or Saw 1.
That was the coolest thing about The Twilight Zone - it took those real fears (sleeplessness, paranoia, beautiful women) and used them against us😂. It WAS a great episode, brother - thanks for the deep dive!
Another great video, good job.
Ahhh shit here we go again
It's spoilers. It's the episode play test it The exact same twist, but much sadder
always a joy to see poltergibbst uploads!
I thought this was gonna be the amnesia brick episode I went to look for it and can’t find it I think I’m imagining it if someone has a clue what I’m talking about please let me know
I have never DIED from the dancing lady dreams I have every night. I just change my pajama bottoms and go back to sleep.
Egnh. I feel this episode was kind of mid because there’s so much happening and the “it was all a dream” trope has almost always been a cop out. Not one of the better TZ’s or twists in my opinion.
The very first scene just gives off social anxiety vibes initially
It might be too late for this year and it isn’t horror, but Night of the Meek might be a good idea for a special Christmas episode.
If I would have been thinking I definitely would have done something for Christmas.
But now I'm just trying to make sure I can get a video to wrap up the year without missing it by too much. 😅
