    It’s good to catch up with you! I’m publishing two books on Monday, August 15 (one free book for my email list!). Throughout this process I’ve worried about whether or not my books and writing is good enough. I’ve remembered you saying that in order to get better, you have to keep writing, and that your writing now is so different than your first books. Thank you for that advice. What you do matters and has helped me a lot in this journey! 🥰😀

    Hi, Courtney! Urgh, I'm so grateful for your channel. I want to start self-publishing but am having a lot of doubts because I'm up to my neck in debt and absolutely HATE the job that I'm working at right now. But, every time that I feel down and like I'm losing motivation to keep going, I come to your channel and you always cheer me right on up so thank you for that! I do have one question though. What were the first couple of months (and then first year) of self-publishing like for you? Did it take off immediately or did you have to work and promote a lot before you saw your work starting to soar?

    Congrats to all those translated books of yours ❤ 😊
    The fact that you don't want to sell me courses and what not and share so many tips, tricks, and advice is what kept me here for years. I may not leave a lot of comments, but I appreciate you so much!
    I'm currently reading the final book in the Warrior Bard series, A Song of Flight by Juliet Marillier ❤
    It's a adult historical fantasy set in ancient Ireland 😊.

    Omg, I love your rule about waiting a year to jump in to things. I'm very impulsive and I'll be absolutely obsessed with something...for like two months. And then I've invested all this time and usually quite a bit of money in it only to realize I'm not interested anymore. *sigh* regerts.

    Congratulations Courtney! You keep inspiring me and I don't know how you and Brooke do it, but you both have magic! Rooting for over 500 million sold in print and converted to over 30 languages.

    I appreciate the like minded concept of writing comes first and the rest after. I’ve considered courses etc, but recently I have decided to put everything on UA-cam as I really enjoy the creation/editing process and want to keep it fun instead of a “job”.

      Yes, I'm right there with you! :) I created an authortube channel because all I want to do is write. Just staying true to my "why".

    I have always been curious about what authors do with the copies they get from the publisher! Do you sell them? Are they for giveaways? Do you send them out to reviewers?

    • @TheCourtneyProject
      @TheCourtneyProject  2 роки тому +1

      We get anywhere from 3-6 copies of our books from publishers, depending on what was negotiated in the contract. We usually keep a copy each on our bookshelf and give the other copies away. You can do whatever you want with them, but I’d never sell them. ❤️

    One question that I cannot remember the answer to, is if you add your own ISBN for ebooks, even though Amazon and D2D doesn’t require one. Thanks!

    • @TheCourtneyProject
      @TheCourtneyProject  2 роки тому +3

      Yes, we do have ISBNs assigned to every book we publish and we do use them on d2d and Amazon + all the other places. 😘

    How do you/publishers decide which covers will do well internationally and which ones you need to change for the market?

    • @TheCourtneyProject
      @TheCourtneyProject  2 роки тому

      They usually change our covers because they like to use their in-house designers rather than paying our designer for the concept. It’s cheaper. So 9 times out of 10, for foreign, they change them and use stock photos but try to use the same types of elements. They send us the cover to approve but honestly they know their market best.

    Congratulations on all the foreign editions! Curious, when you sell to Poland, etc. do you give up everything, or is it like a trad deal where there's an advance and you can earn out?
    Glad you had some time to recharge even if those deadlines are no joke! I'm trying to get back into it (procrastinating by watching this video but will be switching gears.) Will definitely pick up the anthologies even if I don't have anything to donate (for this time) :)

    • @TheCourtneyProject
      @TheCourtneyProject  2 роки тому +2

      So, when we sell our foreign rights I believe it was for ebook, paperback, and translated audio (if they choose to produce). We get an advance that has to be earned out, just as a regular ole traditional deal. Percentages paid out increases after so many copies are sold too (once the advance is earned). We’ve been very lucky and have gotten some great advances on foreign, especially in languages we’ve never thought of translating our books into!
      And thank you so much. No procrastination station, haha, okay maybe this once. This deadline might be the one that officially breaks me. Lol, we’ll see after next week. Thanks again!!

    The first one was Polish - Alex & River (Taming Him). Then yes, Needing Him in German! Love these covers. And French Checkmate Duet #2! Now send me the big box of books!!!! 😃

      It was Taming Him? For some reason I thought it was Chasing Him because have the two others on my shelf in that series. Lol might need to rearrange the order. Box is on the way! 🙌🙌🙌
