- This piece was cut a bit odd making it somewhat difficult to get the most out of it. With a little big of ingenuity, I found a way to hold the piece securely and to turn it with the least waste. Finished in shellac.

Beautiful grain and as always very well turned with a n amazing finish...

Thank you very kindly, Andy! Take care of yourself, too! 😊
Wow Phil. That turned out very nice!
Glad you like it, Laura, thanks! 😊
I haven't the foggiest idea what kind of wood this is but wow , what gorgeous grain . Phil you are the master of the weird bowls ! Great job of turning and finish !
It's Mesquite, Jon. Thank you! 😊
This is absolutely gorgeous! Wow! What a wonderful accomplishment!
Thank you, Helen! 😊
WOW!!! That is a beautiful Phil. Some years ago I was given a rather large slab of wood. To my understanding it came from Asia. It is extremely dense and harder than concrete. Even using carbide tools, all I could get off of it was powder and a lot of very dull tools.
Thanks 👍
Whatever it is, it has tons of character. The colors and patterns are perfect!
Thank you! 😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Ted Helvig from Arizona... I wonder if that could be Mesquite? Sure is a beautiful turning Phil. It seems like the most impressive grain comes from the harder woods. Which means, I guess, you do kind of have to work harder to find what you know is inside? But you do seem to always find it Phil. Ted you sure had a great eye on this piece. Think's for sending (send more).... TM
You are correct, Tuffy, Mesquite! I forgot to even consider that one. You are also correct, the harder the wood the more beautiful the piece! Yup, I'm so glad Ted sent this one along, it's a beauty! 😊
Would have been a waist to lose that beautiful wood. Luckily, you got your hands on it and brought out its beauty. Another piece of art, thanks for sharing.
😊
I know this wood. It is Beauticia Spinnicas! Who cares? It beautiful. This particular piece spent its life growing and waiting for the Master's (of the lathe) hand to turn it into the gorgeous bowl it became. Thank you, Ted, for getting it to Phil. Awesome job, Phil, as always.
Haha! Seems to be Mesquite, Steve! 😊
What a great poem. The masters hand .
Thank you again Phil for a very enjoyable video. The piece is just beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I hope to see you next week

All these wrong guesses as to what type of wood this piece is. It was so very obvious from the moment you showed it that is was an outstanding piece of Philwood! And as usual you brought out all it’s inner beauty. Thanks for the video. Cheers, Tom
Haha, thanks, Tom! It's Mesquite! 😊
Absolutely gorgeous Phil 💜

Beautiful work Phil. Another stunning transformation. Take care.
Thanks, Kevin, you too! 😊
Another winner, Phil!
Thanks, Wally! 😊
Another amazingly beautiful piece of art to add to your collection! When you had finished the outside, I thought that’s another one that needs to be on a turntable so you can see all the beauty and charm in it. Then at the end it was! You just need to move it to a turntable in the house now. 😉👌👍👏😊💕💕💕💕
I'm so glad you like it, BobbieJean, thank you! 😊
Very pretty! You’re an artist! Thanks Phil!
Thank you, Brenda! 😊
Another exceptional piece. Walnut comes to mind, though parts look like
Olive. Mystery wood sounds closer.
Seems to be Mesquite judging by all the comments, Alan! 😊
Another nice bowl from an odd shaped piece, well done Phil.
Thanks, Doc! 😊
Mystery wood is some of the best and most interesting! Keeps yoh on your toes!
Sure enough! 😊
I keep seeing half of a clam shell , beautiful work brother Phil
😊
From the color and hardness I'd say it is a piece of mesquite root. A lot turn up in the washes after a rainstorm. That is a beautiful bowl. Slow and steady always gets it done.
Seems to be the consensus, thank you! 😊
WOW Phil that grain is very beautiful and colour is awesome.
Thanks, Manjit! 😊
My dad use to say “if you’ve going to take time to do then do it right.” You hit this one out of the park, another winner!
You're dad was right on the money, Betsy! 😊
Gorgeous bowl, the wood in that one is spectacular and you brought out the best in it, well done and thanks!
Cheers Al
😊
Beautiful, as always, Phil. I love the grain of the wood. Were you ever able to find out what the wood is? 😊😊
Yes! It's Mesquite! 😊
My oh my not sure what type of wood it is but it sure is Purdy Phill love the flat spots too adds to the character beautiful stunning you do get the most beautiful pieces of material to work with and you make the most of it Blessings Phil
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful again! I'm one of the ones who's bothered by squared off ends sometimes. These flat areas don't detect from the beauty of the bowl at all! Great job enhancing the natural wood 's beauty.
Thank you, Kristi! 😊
Wow. Beautiful dark rich wood color and grain.
😊
The few small flat portions don't bother me at all. Happy you thinned the side a little more. Beautiful features, color and grain
Thank you, Russ! 😊
IDK Phil, looks like walnut to me. 🤷♂️. Beautiful. ❤👍👍👍
😊
Oooooo..... now thasa nice! Love the shape and the grain.
Thank you, Dave! Cheers! 😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil another beautiful creation what a fantastic finish as smooth as glass. Can't help with identifying the wood but it is great. Thanks Phil.
😊
Super grain, gorgeous piece. LOVE IT! ❤❤❤
I'm glad, thank you, Marge! 😊
Wow another beauty in the books. Well done.
Thanks, Chris! 😊
My goodness, what a beautiful piece!!

Hi Phil this piece of wood is magnificent it has wonderful grain and markings it's so beautiful. The natural small bowl is so magnificent and your finishing you put on it really made everything stand out. Well done Phil brilliant video, take xare thinking of you Amanda xx
Glad you like it, Amanda, thank you! 😊
When I first started watching videos of Woodturning, I thought wow that won't take long at all, boy was I surprised. Goofy me didn't think about how the video is sped up 😂 your right slow and steady wins the race. And wow, that is a total Stunner!
Thank you, Jane! 😊
For lack of more accurate information, I'm thinking that's Gorgeous Wood! This creation is one to be contemplated, so intricate are its grain patterns and wonderful edge. A beautiful work of art, Phil. Thank you for letting us watch it take shape.
Thank you, Gwynn! 😊
Thanks for another Gem Phil
😊
WOW. You did an amazing job on this one. I love the grain and character.
😊
Phil
Nice job.
My thinking is that it is Mesquite. Arizona Mesquite is a bit more brown in color
Texas Mesquite is more on the redish side.
It is a beautiful bowl.
John
You nailed it, John! Mesquite is the consensus! 😊
I don't have a guess as to the species of wood but one thing I can say foe sure is that I really like it. So much to see in this one and the grain is beyond beautiful.
Thanks again for sharing the experience and the advice; much appreciated.
I knew it would be nice but, wow, that grain and color! Thanks, Bob! 😊
Sensational piece. Gorgeous. Beautiful grain.
Thank you! 😊
Amazing grain no doubt!1 Beautiful piece Again Phil
😊
1 see a Guinea Pig or Lop Rabbit face in the finished bowl. It looks like the bowl could even be sat on their feet with the flat side of the bowl. Gorgeous piece,
Phil
Cool, thanks! 😊
Yep that is another big thumbs up cobber. It almost looks like a type of acacia we find here in west aussie we call jam. It smells like raspberry jam when you turn it. Have a great weekend cobber see you next week. Cheers Deno
Oh, I love raspberry jam, Deno! 😊
Maybe Walnut root. Beautiful little bowl . You are right about taking your time Monday I chased a cherry bowl twice
Haha, it happens, Bum! 😊
Gorgeous! You are a true artist. 🥰
Thank you kindly! 😊
You seem to be able to take the most unusual pieces of wood and bring out the most beautiful and interesting objects. I am truly impressed and jealous. Thanks for sharing.
Very nice.
I was thinking walnut at first also.
I looked up some images of mesquite, and I think that’s what it could possibly be.
There were a few turned pieces in the images that looked a lot like the piece you just did.
Yup, Mesquite it is, Barry! 😊
Truly Gorgeous work it’s uniqueness is something to behold!!!
😊
That grain is something else gorgeous!
😊
I think it's beautiful I love you're work ❤
Thank you so much! 😊
Nature plus a master equal to gorgeous perfection
Thank you, Reba! 😊
Lovely grain in this mystery wood, and I am sorry, but I have no idea what wood it is! Another masterful job in bringing out the best in it - thank you for sharing with us, Phil.
10/26/2023. Looks similar to Japanese Pagoda tree. I have made many lidded boxes from a limb I trimed from my family's tree.
Thanks, David! 😊
I’m thinking Mesquite. Another beauty Phil , thanks
You're right, Moe! 😊
Don’t tell my wife. I’ll break the 36 year streak
