It’s actually really not that hard to get a glass of water in Europe, you simply have to order it 😄 they won’t just serve you a glass for free. And the „traditional“ clothing stuff you tried on is called „Trachten“ ☺️ love your videos, glad you enjoyed Europe!

In France, if you want a glass of tap water not evian, ask for "une carafe d'eau". It will be free :)

Yes, the tap water is safe to drink since Mary Kate and Ashley convinced the foreign minister to clean it up.

omg as someone who loves thrifting in Paris and has started collecting traditional German and Austrian clothing this was quite literally my favourite. Genuinely that black dress is a dream. i hope you can go back to the Marais at some point, that blue kilo shop is known for having more vintage pieces from Japan at low prices and can be really great.

I am... so amazed your french was that good, because I too studied french all 4 years of high school, and when I went to quebec like a year later I was COMPLETELY useless

      Speaking as a Canadian.....
Quebecoise is like a WHOLE different dialect. Even in Canadian schools, we typically learn Standard Parisian French and it's *very different* from what you hear in Quebec. So it probably wasn't the fault of your French skills!

Hey Kathleen! Great to see you’ve enjoyed your time in Paris and Vienna :) If you want to explore more of Europe, Stockholm has some pretty good public transport as well as some nice second hand shops. And the swimming here is simply magical! But most importantly, you get free water with every meal lol. Just saying! 😉😉

Maybe a bit too late now, but both in Paris and Vienna it should be really easy to order just water. In Paris, it's "une carafe (d'eau)", in Austria it's "Leitungswasser". (Source: am from Vienna and have been to France twice). Side note, it's so odd seeing stuff like the Viennese subway system and street names in a UA-cam video haha.

If you want more thrifting destinations I highly recommend Reykjavik Iceland. My favorites were Wasteland, Spuutnik, and the Red Cross store. I also found a Missoni sweater, and so many other treasures that I had to sit on my carry-on to close it. Also a great destination for getting in a body of water year round.

so many thoughts on this video as a viennese person ^^ love the appreciation for my city, it really is the best place to live. also so fun to see you literally go to my go to humana on the street that I used to live on until recently. I've been growing tired of thrifting here because I never find special things, idk how you did that. also always fun to see other people wear our dirndl (traditional dress) as fashion because for me it holds different connotations. and lastly, the jaywalking thing: I never ever heard anyone say that viennese people respect the red light, it's literally the opposite ^^ anyway that was a whole essay haha I really enjoyed the video!

    • @elinoraskeland4588
      @elinoraskeland4588 10 місяців тому +2

I second the different connotations @traditional austrian garments. They have a bit of a sour taste to them, as they are often worn by people who vote for far right parties, people who have very traditional opinions on things like gay rights or equality or migration, and last but not least, they were very heavily marketed under the 3rd reich. Many openminded, liberal, nice people wear them too, play with the looks, so it's not black and white. But there are those connotations and contexts and I personally like to know a bit about stuff I wear.
and yes, no idea where that came from, when there's no police car to be seen, everyone jaywalks, crosses streets wherever they like.

Once when I was walking across Valencia I saw the cutest lil' vintage shop. The clothes were 70s vibe but a bit on the expensive side. But I managed to spot a gorgeous blue bandana with star constelations on it. I mean come on! And it was so cheap too. Even if I'm not wearing it I have it hung up in my room ❤

As for the glass of water: yes, nearly impossible to glass of water for free here in Europe. You can get water, but it’s then brand water and you have to pay for it.
I’ve been to a lot of places around the world, but never go thrift shopping. I never do where I live, so it doesn’t cross my mind to do that elsewhere. 😅

I went to London last year on a short study abroad trip and attempted to thrift when I had time lol, it was fun but definitely hit or miss! I did come back with a really fun skirt for only £5. Being used to the giant thrifts in the US, the very small shops were a lot more of a challenge. Cool vintage there too, but definitely pricey! Love the vid as always!💖

I also spent time in London last year and loved the secondhand shopping, both in super affordable charity shops and in somewhat spendier spots like Traid. I got two great charcoal cardigans, a couple of £3 leather belts, and an awesome steampunky kilt-y black linen skirt that I made a nice lady take off a mannequin in Walthamstow near the William Morris Gallery.

West Berlin, Germany, 1988, a year before the wall came down: I am seventeen years old on foreign exchange for my senior year of high school. The city's youth life is thriving. The discotheques are thumping all night long. The secondhand shops are wall-to-wall leather jackets and pants--by the pound. I am a penniless scholarship student who looks but doesn't buy.
I've never been back, but would love to know if the thrift scene could possibly have gotten even better since then.

Super cheap to stay there as well.
I had a fantastic time there, the caviat being that I pass for a straight white woman very easily. I felt reasonably safe (even though I was a solo traveler), however, the subtle hostility towards minorities wasn't lost on me either.

We don't drink water in Europe as you do in the US, but there are vast differences between countries. Some countries prefer sparkling water (Germany for example), so you have to pay for it, but it's cheap. In other places they will automatically put water on the table, but don't be surprised if it is at room temp. In a few very posh cities, it's a challenge to get water, even if you know how to ask for a "carafe d'eau", you may be aking two or three times and never get it.
But with coffee it's easier to get a glass of water, it's the italian style: small coffee, glass of water.
I was surprised my first time in the US about the giant glasses of water with ice served as soon as you sit up. It's nice. What is less nice is the fact that as soon as you are finished drinking or eating you are supposed to leave the table. In Europe, you will be able to sit as long as you want (unless the place is very full and you add just one coffee in three hours...).
The little cultural differencies are what make travel so interesting.

I think that here in Prague you can get tap water almost everywhere but sometimes you have to specifically ask for it. Otherwise, they'll give you bottled water which is often more expensive than beer (or at least at a similar price range) 😅 But I don't think Prague is a good thrift place, so I can only recommend the city as a beautiful place to visit 😉

Not sure how I feel about the colonial harlot style, nothing is stylish about colonialism. Especially as an Indigenous viewer, I hope I'm not going to see more of it.

I visited Vienna for the first time this year and visited a lot of the same shops as you! It was such a true pleasure to see them again and remember the fun I had wandering around on my own and treasure-hunting. I mostly ended up with bright silky blouses! I was impressed by how clean the shops were, too. It’s a gorgeous city!

So, you asked for European Vintage tips in the comments. And while Berlin might not be your choice of travel, maybe some of your viewers find themselves here, so let me write you a short guide should your way pass around here: (in multiple parts because YT is being weird about this comment, so, 1/2 and next one in an answer below)
First off, there are more than 200 second hand shops in Berlin. My own google maps list for them currently counts 243 that I know of. So there are MANY. It's a thing here. Chances are, just strolling around the more popular areas, you will come across a few just by chance. And if you have some specialty wishes, have a google, because you might find it here. With so many to choose from though, you might want some guidance. I'll start with the bigger names that have many stores, and explain those, and end with smaller recommendations. (And I tried to include the nearest public transit stops too, which in Berlin is a network of U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and more.)
Humana. They're literally all over Berlin and you can find one in almost every district, but by far the biggest and most notable one is in Friedrichshain at U-Bahn station Frankfurter Tor. It's a big department-store-sized multi-floor second hand clothing shop that has made it onto German TV several times. The top floor (third floor I think? or maybe fourth??) is for the most funky vintage clothing. Notable for any plus size queens in the comment section: they have an entire pluz size floor too (second floor I think?) that is as big as some entire second hand shops alone. As far as I'm informed, Humana is a Danish non-profit that's all over Europe. The money they get through second hand clothing mostly goes to environmental, educational and health projects including the fight against HIV.
Resales are more in the districts further from the city centre, and they're real actual thrift stores with cheaper prices, less vintage and more every day clothes. A particularly nice one is in Weißensee.
Oxfam charity shops are dotted among some of the more inner city districts and usually have an assortment of clothes, accessories and ceramics.
Nochmall is the big thrift store run by the BSR - the official Berlin Trash Collection -whose worker rescue items too good to throw away from the trash and then they get sold here. You can find ANYTHING here, from ice cube forms to ceramic kitsch. They also have a repair café where they help you mend broken things.
Picknweight are maybe the ultimate Berlin hipster experience. They're kilo price stores that stock very curated clothes. The items you find here are among the coolest Berlin fashion you can find. Especially the ones in Mitte near U-Bahn Weinmeisterstr and in Bergmannkiez are top notch. However, they're definitely not the cheapest second hand option.
Check pop up vintage events! Vilokilo for instance regularly hosts MASSIVE pop-up vintage markets in Berlin. The Nightmarket event - next to a whole range of handmade small business sellers and DIY on-sote workshops - also has a big vintage clothing pop up line-up. Another regular one is Nowkoelln Flowmarkt - this one is half event half fleamarket that definitely focus most on clothing, with several semi-frequent dates per year. They also host a Nowkoelln Flowmarkt Christmas Market edition once per year during Christmas Market season.
Speaking of Fleamarkets! Berlin hs so so many, every regular sunday (and some on saturday). Lesser known absolute GEMS are the massive Karlshorst Trabrennbahn one for antiques that also has the odd clothing rack strewn into the mix (it's a bit outside of the city center, but twice per year they fill up an entire horse racing area, and regularly at least a smaller portion of it), the smaller district one at Arkonaplatz where Prenzlauer Berg meets Wedding, as well as the one on Marheinekeplatz in popular Bergmannkiez. The one on RAW Gelände near S+U Warschauer Straße is full of treasure too, to a backdrop of stunning street-art. The more famous ones are Boxhagener Platz (still worth a look in Friedrichshain near S+U Bahn Warschauer Straße / U Bahn Frankfurter Tor / tram station Grünberger Straße/Warschauer Straße and Boxhagener Straße) and Mauerpark (definitely the most tourist-y one but you can still find a few treasures there) in Prenzlauer Berg (nearest tram station is Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn Sportpark).

      2/2
Now on to the smaller ones. Most of the ones I listed here are located in Prenzlauer Berg, Mitte, Friedrichshain Kreuzberg and Neukölln, but that doesn't mean you can't find more gems elsewhere too. Just my picks. In no particular order:
Sir Henri Vintage Second Hand in Friedrichshain's Boxikiez (nearest tram station is Grünberger Str/Warschauer Str.) is one of those very old and very original Berlin second hand shops that feels like it's taken straight from the 80s. Just like some of the stores similar to it, it spans two separate smaller shop sites on the same street.
Who killed bambi near S+U-Bahn Hackescher Markt is a small but super cool little curated vintage clothing and upcycling shop in an area near many little curated vintage shops
Villa217 - a super unknown tiny second hand shop in the lesser frequented part of Prenzlauer Berg (nearest tram station is Am Friedrichshain) with very limited shop hours. Woman-owned and the owner seems to truly hand-pick all the lovely items she sells (which is clothing and tchotchkes). It's honestly one of my very favorites even though barely anyone seems to know about this one.
Vintage revivals - they have two stores in Berlin, one smaller one near S+U Bahn Hackescher Markt / U-Bahn Weinmeisterstr on Münzstr in Mitte, one slightly bigger one on Schönhauser Allee in Prenzlauer Berg. They're clothing only, incredibly nicely curated, with all the color and style.
Sœur is a woman-owned tiny little vintage store in Prenzlauer Berg near Villa217 that is ALSO absolute magic. The 'your sister picks out incredible outfits for you' vibe is strong here. Nearest tram station is Husemann str. )and if you're there on a weekend or a Thursday - around the corner is Kollwitzkiez with its two very wonderful Farmer's Markets on Saturdays and Thursdays. The whole area has a LOT of niche second hand stores from antique stores to second hand wood furniture to second hand wicker items... yes. amazing.)
Objekthandel is a second hand shop on the same street as Sœur. This one isn't clothes bit 'objects' and the collection is fantastic.
Saudade also in the network of sidestreets near Kollwitzkitz - is a few streets away from Sœur and Objekthandel and a wonderful little second hand furniture and home wares shop.
Pauls Boutique in Prenzlauer Berg near Mauerpark (nearest tram station is Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn Sportpark) is another one of those old seems-like-straight-from-the-80s shops that spans several small shop sites full of clothes and sneakers on the same street. In winter, they have a big collection of Norwegian pattern knit jumpers. This one is absolute Berlin culture. Also, their decor with eclectic vintage plastic pop culture figurines? Fantastic.
VEB Orange is on the same street as Pauls Boutique on Oderbergerstr - and it's an incredibly special second hand shop because it exclusively sells items from the former GDR. For those who lived in it before German unification, this shop can feel like a museum of their childhoods.
Meins & Deins - more of those really old, really cool small second hand shops in several small shops on the same street that have been around forever and a day. MANY many shoes especially. This one is also in Prenzlauer Berg, on Danziger Str. Nearest tram station is Husemannstr.
Basically around the corner from Meins & Deins is Zweimalschön. An utterly lovely little charity shop run by an army of lovely middle-aged women. One of the more affordable shops for second hand clothing. Also near Husemannstr. Tram station!
They only stock German books but incredible to look at is Bücher (literlly 'books'), a hole-in-the-wall second hand book shop on Prenzlauer Allee that only opens when the owner is there. It is just stacks and stacks of old books that the very chronically grumpy owner brings out for you. Very eccentric and kinda charming.
Different kind of eccentric and grumpy and special is O.F.T. vintage. This is a second hand clothing treasure trove that includes some vintage stage costumes curated by a stylist, and you have to make an appointment with her to get in!
On Linienstr. in Mitte (same area as all the next ones) is Garments Vintage. A shop filled with second hand clothes from brands like Moschino but also the odd Chanel, known for some surprisingly affordable prices given the original price ranges.
Mankii Vintage in Mitte is in a very artsy area near Auguststraße and Linienstraße - streets that are known for their young galleries, art centers, contemporary art museums and street art, while being somewhat glam. The same vibe is what Mankii has. Here you can also find some Vintage high end fashion like Prada among all the glitter, nestled between the cool girl things and floral applique. Nearest U-Bahn station is Rosa-Luxemburg Platz.
Around the corner from Mankii is Pauls Chapter on Torstraße. They're the same people from Pauls Boutique on Oderberger Straße. Aaaand while you're already in the neighborhood, The Sanctuary Berlin on Torstraße makes vegan Italian pastries that are to die for.
Also on Torstraße is another small and lesser known vintage shop called Bintus Vintage Clothing and Bags. As their name says, they're especially notable for their bags.
Repeater in Neukölln near Maybachufer (nearest U Bahn station is Schönleinstr) is one of many incredibly well curated second hand vintage shops in the area. Want a rainbow wall made of old converse? Got it.
LeMagass in Reuterkiez Neukölln is in the same area near Maybachufer. Again, very hip and cool, and you can find anything from funky hats to yukata.
YUMMY vintage is another small woman-owned vintage store near Maybachufer in the same Kiez as the previous shops. It's run by an Italian who curates her stinky goodnesses incredibly nicely. It feels like stepping into a boutique. Their jewelry collection also is a joy to behold.
Have a stroll around that whole area. You can find a vintage shop almost in every street here. Not Too Sweet and Wsiura and two more shops within a 2 block radius. And if you need a break from the shops, charming cafés like Café Kaltulki or Katie's Blue Cat are around the corner, too.
Legends Vintage in Kreuzberg's Falkensteinstr. is another Berlin old-timer formerly located in Friedrichshain. This one is all about the 70s through 90s and your vintage cool boy leather jacket needs. Also in this street is Aldemir, a hole-in-the-wall ice cream shop that every local loves.
Anyway I hope this helps someone!
(And I also hope lots of other people write guides for their cities too so I get travel inspo too lol)
