- In this series of lessons, I'll show you how to sketch various different places to capture the essence of the place as quickly as possible. The idea is that you can take this approach and use it when sketching outdoors on location.
There are 5 lessons in total and you'll find links to each of them below.
LESSONS IN THIS SERIES
Lesson 1 (Lighthouse): • How to Sketch places Q...
Lesson 2 (Cabin): You are here
Lesson 3 (Woods:): • How to Sketch places Q...
Lesson 4 (Cafe): • How to Sketch places Q...
Lesson 5 (Docks): • How to Sketch places Q...
MATERIALS YOU'LL NEED
The materials list couldn't be simpler. All you need is a sketchbook and a pencil. A softer pencil (ie. 2B or softer) will give you a range of values so you can add some dark tones to your sketches.

Thanks for these quick tutorials. Just wanted to let you know that the finished sketch linked in the description is the lighthouse (should be the cabin). All the other links in these five videos were correct. FYI
ditto
Wow... cant believe this is free. Thank you!
Thank you so, so, soooo much!! I am an art teacher and your videos literally saved me (these are the videos I’ve been praying for!). Thank you beyond words for including the photo references….you are amazing!!
thank you! I'm doing these one a day and it is so so helpful, because I'm always overwhelmed by the "steps" of sketching and your videos are so well explained!
Love these exercises, thank you so much. I took this one and coloured it with aquarelle paint. It came out very lovely. Looking forward to the next one, the woods.
Phil, I find your style of instruction very helpful and confidence building as a student. Not to be critical but your reference sketch of the cabin is actually another of your lighthouse. Not sure how or if you can get that posted, but I for one would like to have a copy of it. Thanks
HI Phil, Thanks for the lesson! The link to the finished sketch seems to be missing - I get a lighthouse instead.......
Amazing guy xxx
