  • Hello everyone. This is a recording of a presentation I have made to several Telephone Associations that demonstrates how to leverage Wireshark in troubleshooting packet voice - Voice over IP. I use several captures to demonstrate the essential skills needed to be successful.

VoIP runs over the internet, so there may be some issues if the internet is slow. This video is helpful in understanding and troubleshooting VoIP issues.

I'm something of a wireshark veteran, but learned a lot from this video! Never noticed the small circle down on the bottom left before!
One thing I do slightly differently...I always look at the stats summary first to ensure there's no dropped packets, capture filters etc

demo #2 analysis is incorrect. Sure its a 401 but thats normal in the registration exchange and it triggers the registration with auth ... look at the first one like the knock on the door and the 401 being the person behind the door asking for ID before letting you in; I do like your profile usage.

Very useful. Can I use the SIP configuration to troubleshoot my own cell phone?

Very helpful content, thank you. Do you have a video or course you'd recommend for troubleshooting once you've identified that there is packet loss on the RTP stream? Is there data within the capture that could help point to a cause of the packet loss or would this require going outside the capture such as examining network/firewall logs?

very much appreciated your efforts in this tutorial for so many 'confused' people (like me) out there. I always wished to work with someone like you to learn stuff...but things not always go your way in life!!! Thank you! ----on the side note---I have been trying to figure out a SIP call issue where both parties (calling and called) don't hear each other!!! However, I do see SIP signalling and RTP packets flowing. Is this could be a NAT or FW issue? If I am correct, how would I prove that to network team by looking at the wireshark logs?

Hi Sorry for the delayed response. So happy this has been helpful. With regards to SIP - yes it could be. Is there any way you would be comfortable sharing the Wireshark capture? If so DM me at andyw@cellstream.com

Shiva, I think you missed the point on profiles. The Default profile is the default profile that comes with Wireshark. To get the other profiles, you must download them and install them. If it was not clear in this video, I suggest you watch my other video on the Power of Profiles: ua-cam.com/video/tSzgcEB9f54/v-deo.html

Well, there are multiple links...it would have been helpful to know which one you are talking about. I will run through them all and check them and edit as necessary. 😄
