Snake plant soil propagation

  • I used sand to improve drainage of the soil. Sand is excellent for improving drainage. You can find sand of different sizes, it's better to use medium to coarse sand (0.25 - 2mm) as it provides larger pore space. The problem is it's very heavy, so you can't use a lot of it, and you can't use it in large pots, as they become very difficult to manipulate.
    Since there is no drainage hole on this pot, I had to water very carefully, not too much. I'll post updates with the growth :)
    These cuttings will revert back to sansevieria trifasciata. If you want to keep the same plant, you need to propagate with a piece of the rhizome.
    Let me know if you have any questions :)

      Maybe that's where the " upside down V" looks come in handy, too( besides it being solely for roots to be able to form more easily). I'm just thinking ( bc idk I've never actually done it) ,but if she wouldn't have cut the leaf straight across and did the "V" ( upside down) on the leaf she cut ,then it wouldn't leave the plant with straight cuts, as it was growing back,ya know? It could keep the natural pointy snake plant look that way..Idk ,just a thought 🤔.

    • @MrHouseplant

      There are several things you can do to improve chances of success:
      1) Sterilize cutting tools to reduce chances of infection
      2) Let the cutting callus for a few days before putting in water or soil
      3) Keep in front of the brightest window, and/or use a grow light. Light increases photosynthesis
      4) If water propagating, use a heat mat and an air pump. If soil propagating, use a heat mat, and a humidity dome could be beneficial
      5) Replace water every week
      None of these guarantee success, but any of these will increase chances of success

    Will we get varigatet snake plant after leaf propogation

    • @MrHouseplant
      @MrHouseplant  3 роки тому +2

    Why can’t I successfully propagate my snake plant w soil or even with water :(

    • @MrHouseplant
      @MrHouseplant  3 роки тому +1

      Try sterilizing the cutting tools and letting the cuttings callous. Also try using a rooting hormone and providing more light. Ideally use a heat mat as well :) Of course, try 10 cuttings instead of 1-2, it increases the chances of success

    • @Shubhi3012
      @Shubhi3012 3 роки тому +2

      I succeeded in all the three ways of propagating snake plant... In water, try changing the water once or twice a week and keep it in indirect sunlight... The roots will appear in about 1and a half month... And if your leaves rot cut the bottom part, If you can keep it in a vessel in which the leaf does not touch the bottom then do so... And in water propagation you don't have to let it callous over... In soil you have to let it callous over... Don't let the cuttings dry out.... I mean to say that you can water it by seeing if the top soil is dry... Don't overwater it.. Otherwise your cuttings will be soggy and gross... U can use turmeric, cinnamon, honey or the mixture of the three as a rooting hormone... Don't loose hope 💚💚it might take some time but you will succeed... I had to try twice then I succeeded.... Hope it helps:):)

      It takes weeks, even months to propagate a snake plant, if the conditions aren't optimal (good light, good temperature of the propagation medium, oxygen for the roots) :) I suggest trying with several cuttings at the same time and increasing light, warmth and oxygen by using a grow light, a heat mat and using a porous potting mix :)

      Yes, that is correct. But if you take a small piece of the rhizome together with the leaf, you'll get the same plant. I just wanted to demonstrate the soil propagation method. Some people will just want to produce multiple cuttings even if they revert back to the all green version. And I didn't have an all-green version of the snake plant to demonstrate on it :)
