Shaft couplers are used to join two shafts together. This union could be between a motor shaft and another cylindrical object in the assembly, or it might be between two simple shafts (no motor involved). Flexible and rigid varieties of shaft couplers exist. Some versions of these couplers use a key to create positively mechanical engagement between the shafts and coupler. Other versions rely on very precise ID/OD (inner diameter/outer diameter) tolerances between the coupler and the shaft (essentially producing a “slip fit” interface between shaft and coupler), and then use screws to reduce the coupler ID once installed over the shaft OD, effectively clamping the coupler radially around the shaft OD. Coupler are produced in several different ID sizes, many of which are different on either end allowing the coupling of two shafts of different diameters. The supplier will provide specifications detailing the amount of torque that can safely be transmitted through the coupler.
