- Join us on a Roman phallus hunt for New Year's Eve as we explore a section of Hadrian's Wall between Harrow's Scar milecastle and Birdoswald - the Roman fort of Banna.
Including tips on how to locate the illusive phalli of Hadrian's Wall, we also talk briefly about this section of the wall - originally constructed as a turf wall - and the post-Roman life of Milecastle 49.
As ever in this region, the weather was a challenge - check out the video to see if we succeed in our search for another large Roman Phallus.

Hi Darren, Well done for finding this one👏👏. Really well filmed, presented and edited👌👌
I would make a guess that your stride was calibrated in yards ..... so could it be that there are two? one at 190 strides (190 yards) and another at 207 strides (190 metres), 27 strides further on?🤔🤔😉😉
I watched this one on the move this morning, whilst I was navigating my wife around a route of some old churches (we are in Cordoba for New Year). Anyway, at one moment I looked up and spotted some columns, on closer inspection it was the remains of a Roman temple. Discovered in the 1950s, the town hall is partly built over it. I didn't spot any phallic symbols, maybe they thought they were far enough away from the Scots and it wouldn't be necessary!!
The most notable Roman remains here is the bridge over the River Guadalquivir 1000' long by 30' wide. Rebuilt several times so I'm not sure how much is still original. It is quite a sight and diverts your thoughts away from the horrors of Jules Holland and Auld Lang Syne!!
Have a very Happy New Year, all the best
Thank you David! Maybe next year I will go back and find the other one - it can be a tradition for New Year’s Eve - much like Jules Holland.
I have read about that bridge, and yes, I’m not sure if there’s much left of the Roman one. Possibly the footings?
Thanks for watching and all the best for 2024!
Another slick, fun and impressively informative video! I do feel a bit sorry for that drainage channel as it seems doomed to be forever overlooked. Perhaps a new UA-cam channel idea there? The drainage channel channel?
Hope you're having a fun New Year's Eve, and have a very happy new year!
Thank you Tweedy and I love that Drainage Channel Channel idea! The sort of thing I’d invest lots of time and effort in - whilst finding it really interesting and funny myself - only to attract about 3 subscribers!
A quiet New Year’s Eve for me, which is just what’s required, after a very busy festive season. All the best to you and thanks for all the support in 2023 - it’s greatly appreciated.
As usual, beautiful location and interesting narrative! Surprised you found it! 🎉. Happy New Year🎉
I was determined! And the whole video depended on it!
Thank you and for all your encouragement. I hope you have a great New Year!
Northern English types used Hadrian's wall in the dark ages and beyond as a free version of B'n'Q to do home improvements. Obviously they would have left those phallus stones well alone. Maybe our Scottish brothers quite liked them 🤪.
I have wondered how many local churches have Roman phalli embedded in their walls!
Yes, that poor old wall was a quarry for nearly 1,500 years! Glad some of it survived!
Thank you for watching and commenting.
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd You know I will lol...The idea churches have phalli hidden in their walls is a hysterically delicious thought.
Your interest in exceptionally ancient junk is getting disturbing now. Happy New Year!
And a Happy New Year to you, Sir. Would you be reassured if I pleaded that my interest was purely motivated by the desire for UA-cam views!
It also provides a great excuse to revisit one of my favourite places. I was a bit frustrated not to find a legible builders mark. Oh well, another excuse to return.
Thanks for watching.
Your videos always keep me engaged and laughing. Long may it continue. Happy New Year, and thanks for sharing.
Thank you Chris - all the best for 2024!
As always interesting and entertaining-Thank you
Thanks James - Happy New Year to you!
There's so many comments I could make, but I won't.
I can probably guess some of them! Happy New Year and thanks for watching.
hello again Darren , *happy new year* another very interesting video, enjoyed it as always , really well done and thank you 😊
Thank you, Davie. Appreciate your support and all the best for 2024.
Happy new year and happy phallus hunting!
Cheers. I'm sure we'll resort to more phallus-based content in 2024. All the best.
Thank you. Fascinating as always. Happy New Year.
Thanks Chris - and a very Happy New Year to you too.
Phalli count = 59. Roughly. Phallus fail.
57 to go. Good for content generation!
We have these all over Didcot. I think they are more recent than Roman though.
So that's why people refer to it as "Dickcot"!
I noticed those hikers walking along the wall. It just proves that the phalli are not confined to the Southern side wall. You would have found the one you were looking for easier if you had only checked for the big red arrow. How could you miss that?
Good point!
I must get back to that stretch. There’s definitely another one there!
🤣
