Well I'm quite pleased to see a video from you again. Of course, you had to discuss six books I have ne'er heard of before - which is something to be commended and I thank thee for.

Somehow, you always manage to introduce me to interesting books that I've never heard of. Thank you so much for doing that! ☺️

Great to see you back, Matthew! I missed your videos!
The Orphan World and Beautiful went right on my reading list.
Tender is the Flesh, Crossing and The Invention of Morel have been on there already, but you put them really higher in priority.

So so lovely to see your face pop up in my sub feed again! You always discuss such interesting and varied books that I've never heard of. It gives a lot to ponder!
I really feel you on the dissatisfaction note at the end! It's tricky with books that are deliverable trying to make you feel a certain way, like uncomfortable. Kind of had that with Trumpet - I felt all uncomfortable and sad, which was the point, but also I felt like at the edges some of my discomfort was also in the way things were handled, thereby not a deliberate thing... who even knows 🙈

The Invention of Morel was the inspiration for the tv show Lost :)

Can't believe we are already in the middle of the year... wow...
Look at you and old people :P Another Life does sound super fascinating though!
I remember that mail from Gay's The Word :P glad it was a fitting rec!
The Invention of Morel doesn't look like a sci-fi from the outside, so the genre-bending makes sense:P although I do like these editions quite a bit!
I'm super happy to see you back in my feed again and can't wait to follow your reading for the second half of the year!

Haha I know it’s crazy right?
Also love how you basically know all about these books and my experiences with them already! Haha
No pressure at all to keep making videos!! Hahaha but hopefully I can keep it up!

Beautiful sounds really interesting! Maybe the author deliberately didn't want to imitate the style of Latin American magical realism since that genre is specifically grounded in that region and culture? although he still could have incorporated elements of fabulism if that was the case, so it's interesting that he didn't.
    Hope you're doing well Matthew!

Wow, oops sorry I didn't see this comment earlier, I don't know why I'm notified anymore when I get comments?!
It's odd, because I do still see people referring to it as magical realism, and it makes me wonder where they're reading that aspect because it didn't seem to be in the text I read, hahaha! And I'm personally of the belief that as a literary tool magical realism isn't specifically embedded in just Latin American writing, however, it is a fair point and maybe that is what crossed his mind but then that would pose the question as to why he chose to set the story specifically in Mexico with so many other cultural references... it's all a little bit odd but did not overall dampen my experience of the book and would still recommend it to others!
