  • Join Master Beekeeper Erin MacGregor-Forbes as she installs a local northern raised over wintered nucleus honey bee colony in the spring of 2010 in southern Maine. Erin also describes the benefit of working with local over wintered northern raised nucs instead of package bees and nucs with a queen recently introduced to them.

    I learned a long time ago that we can't control everything. Mother Nature created a honey bee species that if we provide them a with great nest cavity, they will have an excellent colony survival rate and produce enough resources for their survival and a little reward for our efforts to sustain their species :-) We are working together to the same end.

    I'm a newbee, getting two mini nukes on Monday and watching videos to make sure I know what I'm going to do. Thanks for your posting, it is helping me here at Pine Meadows Hobby Farm as I start a new adventure in Beekeeping. A thank you from Oregon

    Yes, they like mine give the bees their own unique hive just a little different than the one next to it. My dad made fun of mine saying that I should use numbers.
    However, he also pointed out that bare metal lids get so hot you can not even
    put your hand on top of it in the sun. When it is painted with a light color or white....you can leave your hand there all day. Point is that it makes it easier for the bees to air condition the hive when in the Spring and Summer. Jim Rish of Wewa, Fl

    In Maine in April and May they do! :-) This pure cane in a 1 to 1 solution with water digests easily and simulates the nectar flow they need to draw enough comb to raise brood and store pollen. They would dwindle and die without it until Mother Nature provides her dandelion and fruit bloom flow.

    very nice and clean job!!the only friendly objection i have from this video is that at the end you put a lot of empty frames and you gave a lot of space in the hive for the bees i believe its best to gradually give space to the beeswhith frames of wax.. keep them tight put first two frames of wax to build and then in two weeks put two more frames they work better like this and they build more efficiency

      Thanks. We intentionally put these 5 strong frame colonies in a 10 frame box because they will fully draw out the next 5 frames in 10-14 days. The timing is at the start of our strong spring dandelion and fruit tree flow

    @manvilletrain It depends? The key is the size of the remaining cluster and how much honey they have left. In my area at this time of year we like a watermelon sized cluster and at least 10 deep frames of honey and a few frames of pollen in the hive. They may loose a few thousand bees over the winter and still have plenty of cluster size to stay warm.

    Nice stuff guys. But I was wondering if it was a better to put the empty new frames in the middle as bees tend to let the frames that are all the way to the side of the box empty or at least fill them at last?

    You don't put an entrance reducer on the hive? I would be afraid of robbing when there are only 5 frames of bees.

    I don't like killing the queen cells, better to use them start a new collony.

      @redbrookhoney  9 років тому +1

      Agreed. We like to take capped queen cells as well for new colonies. Those were only "queen cups" with no larvae

    Здравствуйте!Скажите,а вы занимаетесь пчеловодством в многокорпусном улье Лангстрота-Рута или предпочитаете его двухкорпусную модификацию с магазинами?Извините,что не знаю вашего языка!У нас,в России,тоже обретает популярность улей Рута!Правда,более популярна многокорпусная модель,-с магазинами почему-то не любят,хотя они легче корпусов!С уважением к вам...

    well done and not too many dead bees in the process. the only objection i would have is that women tend to overfeed the bees. they take too good care of their health. bees should be let to fend for themselves more than help them. help for bees isnt a big bucket of food but a small bucket only when its needed. they have to learn to overcome problems by themselves and recieve help only when the problem is too big for them to handle alone. spoiled bees are not productive bees.

    I watched your video again. and my opinion has not changed. i don't think you're been keeping bees for very long. for you to call yourself a master beekeeper. where i have been keeping bees for over 50 years. i 'm a 5th generation commercial bee beekeeper. my family been keeping bees since 1863 continuously. i don't claim to be master beekeeper. i just say i know a little something about them. i come to Maine every year. north of Ellsworth. i have no problem overwintering bees in your state.
