@@kevs2 I just uploaded a review of the Down Under Knives “The Mistress”. It’s an amazing knife. Can’t say anything bad about it. ua-cam.com/video/UBen_NVBXps/v-deo.html
I'm thinking of getting one of these blades however I have a few questions. Would this nice be classified as more of a novelty due to its price point and beauty or can it be used as and actual work knife? Has the blade been dipped in chrome to give it that shine or is it legit polished mirror finish steel? Does the sheath fall apart over time? Any further details please let me know.
You might not like my answer but, in my opinion, it`s not worth the money. I`m gonna elaborate why: I tested this knife too see how much it can take. The answer, one small tree of about half a foot in diameter. After that it was game over. The blade held up. Didn`t wiggle or anything. So that`s actually a plus. But the pommel broke off. The problem with the knife is its tang. It`s not full tang but a rat-tail tang with a screwed on pommel. If you want to put it to hard use, don`t. You`re gonna involuntarily disassemble the handle. The blade steel is 440C. Now don`t get me wrong. 44C can be a very decent steel if heat treated correctly. In the case of this knife, it actually is. It didn`t chip or dent. Of course it`s not gonna hold an edge like high carbon tool steels for example. You`ll have to resharpen it more often. But sharpening isn`t too hard with 44C so that`s a plus again. It`s not a terrible knife. But it has some serious issues that need to be addressed. After the pommel broke off, I thought that maybe I just got unlucky. But then I saw a lot of other owners with the exact same issue. Down Under Knives advertises this knife as a heavy duty workhorse. And that it is not. The blade can certainly take it. But the handle won`t. And for some reason, that is beyond me, they never redesigned it. So the issue remains. As a decorative piece, sure. But, spending far over 200 dollars for a wall hanger, I don`t know. The thing is, compare this to, for example, the Svord Tempsky Bowie. The Tempsky Bowie is in the same price range but offers phenomenal value for money. It`s hand forged and made out of L6 tool steel which is also used for axe heads. It has differential heat treating to absorb shocks and a very thick spine. The Temspky Bowie is damn near indestructible. It`s a full tang tank. Same goes for the Cold Steel Trailmaster. Again, the Down Under Knives Bowie isn`t horrible. But it ain`t great either. Just doesn`t live up to the expectations. Regarding the sheath, didn`t have any problems so far but, I didn`t wear it very much. To your question regarding the blade, it is mirror polished. Not chrome plated. Sorry for the long reply. I have a hard time keeping it short.
Thanks for watching 💯 i see blackfoxfalcon has tested this knife and used it👍👍👍so thank you for sharing and testing 👍👍👍here in Ireland you can not carry a knife so for me this knife is ok for displaying, and it's near impossible to buy knife's I had to get this in from Europe
@@BlackFoxFalcon With your recommendations for alternative knives and a bit of further research I went ahead and ordered a Von Tempsky Bowie. It may not be a 7 mm version in blade thickness but I believe it will serve my purposes. Thanks for the heads up. I plan on taking good care of it with oiling it and I heard putting it in a cardboard sheath when not in use will help. I wish I could buy 2 of em.
@@kevs2 Thank you for the response! Considering what you said, as a show piece, it will do just fine. You won`t run into any issues. At the end of the day, if you really like the knife, that`s what matters. I live in a very rural area. So a good fixed blade comes in handy. By the way, I visited Ireland about eight years ago. Loved it. You got an amazing island there.
@@acidforblood Thank you for your reply! Awesome! Very glad to hear that you got something that will do what you need it to. I guarantee that the Tempsky won`t let you down. You`re gonna love it. I’ve checked them out but they say it’s made in Asia, where in Asia they are too frightened to say. I don’t think I’ll buy a Pakistani made knife in 440c for AU$500.00, or from any other Asian country for that matter. It’s more than a little suspicious if you ask me. I’ve also heard more than one person complain that the handles don’t stand up too well. It’s all good and well having a five year warranty at that price I’d want a lifetime unconditional warranty like many others in that price range.
This knife is made in Taiwan and strong as a tank. I have shopping and battoning it so hard..i could not destroy it.. Even the tip i could not destroy by prying sideways.. I wanted to tested it..if it brokes then it be so..but it did not broke.
Be careful if using it much outdoors. The end of the tang and butt caps tend to snap off from what I've seen online and it has been more than one of them. If you want a tough Bowie get a Svord von Temsky Forest Bowie made out of 8670 steel. Tough AZZ steel and a beast of a Bowie. Good luck with that knife, maybe use it for turkey or ham carving at holidays. 👍
whats with knife nerds breaking a knife after many many uses or some other dude breaking it and then saying something along the lines of “good luck with that piece of shit its better suited for something it can handle like spreading jam on toast, or if you want to risk it, it might be able to cut tape on a cardboard box”
I happened to see the knife being reviewed and I liked it. But I made a comment that I would have liked it to have had a full tank, a bigger and fatter handle to fit my hand, didn't mean anything by it, just a comment, didn't seem to go down to well I'm sorry to say.
