  • New year, new (old) camper.
    If you're new here, we've been using this Aljo camper as a photo booth for our business Lamphouse Photo Booth Co. since 2017 and...it needs some work. So I'm setting the CalCraft aside for now to turn my attention to this and hopefully HOPEFULLY have it done in time for the events it's already booked for this fall 😬 let's do this.
    As always, thanks for joining me on another vintage camper rebuild.

    Use a jack stand under the door area bottom framing where the sagging is occurring to support the area while in use. I would just remove all the skin at once including the roof. I know you're working outside but I did too for over 11 years. Yes staples are the way to go with metal installation. But hopefully you only have to do this one more time and never again if done right. Too bad about the front window leaking like that. NO on the one continuous piece running horizontally from the door to the front. That will create a huge week spot that will buckle out later from bouncing down the road. Shasta did that in the mid to late 60s and it was a huge mistake. That's where your metal skin attaches. You don't want that buckling out. The way you did it is proper. I changed it on the 66 I did. I show the before and after in the video series.

      Ah, I get what you mean about the buckling now that I think about it. Continuous vertical studs would be more resistant to buckling. Thanks for pointing that out!
      That's a good idea on the jack stand, but I think I'm going to plan some additional reinforcements in that area on the rebuild. It just never crossed my mind how much wear and tear thousands of people climbing in and out over and over again would put on that area of the deck. I mean it's obvious when I say it out loud now, lol!

    I would replace that bottom piece of metal skin left of the door that has the big square patch on it. You can order it from Steve Loomis at Hemet Valley RV Siding. It should be fairly inexpensive other than shipping. You could also visit a Metals Place and buy a standard 4x12 sheet of aluminum and bend the brakes into it yourself if you can find a hand brake to use.

      You know in 2021 we ordered all new replacement skins from him for the Cal-Craft (for whenever I'm actually able to finish that one), and I had enough left over that I could afford to replace the wrap on this Aljo, but not the sides. I've thought about finding someone local to do it for me though.

      @@TrailerTrashtoTreasure Just buy regular sheet aluminum from a place like Alstate Metals. Used to be $45. Probably 3 times that now but still cheaper than having it shipped. Find an 8 foot hand brake OR rent from some home depots. You can even make your own for just this one panel Angle iron mounted on some two by fours works. There's a guy on you tube that shows how to make that. Home Made Hand Brake.

      Hmmm...home made hand break you say? I like the sound of that.

    It couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m right in the middle of rebuilding ours in California to become a photo booth. I actually own a 1964 Santa Fe that I’m currently peace milling and I also have a oasis that I will be working on next after and I was kind of contemplating what the layout should look like and where I should put the printer to make it flow easier

      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Рік тому

      Well, whatever gets people in and out quickest. Make sure they can get their prints and share their photos on the outside. Thanks for watching!

    Looking forward to following along! I'm renovating a '67 Shasta Compact for a retail shop and curious how you will outfit the interior.

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Рік тому +1

      Sounds like a fun project! The interior's gonna be pretty simple like it is now: a couple of cabinets and a long bench. Keep in mind, in these old campers the cabinetry supports the walls, so taking anything out that was there originally is going to need to be thought through adequately and additional support is going to need to be planed into the redesign.
      Thanks for watching!

    Building a new retro style like this. Consider your frame, 1 coat of S Fiberglass will strengthen and protect the wood.

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Рік тому

      Fiberglass is nice and durable, but I don't really think it's necessary. If your skins are installed correctly and you maintain your windows and doors and such, you shouldn't really have any trouble keeping water out.

    Great to see your new project. I'm curious to hear your insights regarding the use of screws vs nails in the framing. You'd commented on an earlier video about it and I'm looking forward to seeing how well the screws have held up. Did this camper get moved around alot? Cheers!

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Рік тому +1

      If I remember what I was talking about, I had said that nails actually have greater holding potential in applications where flex was a possibility because they're able to bend whereas screws are more likely to snap. I wouldn't say this camper has as many miles on it as most RVs that have criss-crossed the country, but it's probably had more people in and out of it, placing greater differential stress on it's framing than most.
      So how did the screws hold up? In a nutshell, fine. I suspect that nails could hold better in actual earthquake situations where a structure could be subjected to sudden and extreme forces, but the types of vibration and bouncing that a camper is typically subjected to is within the failure tolerance of screws.
      I am not an engineer though, so this is all just a guess on my part.

      Number one suggestion is to always take more photos, make more drawings, and take more measurements than you ever think you need to. Good luck!

    I've found no one listens to me either when I try to explain to them that vintage trailers are very different from modern trailers.

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Рік тому +1

      I think it's because they are deceptively simple in their design. So much so, that people don't really understand some of the honestly brilliant engineering that went into them.

    Conan, why are you having to pull,off the skin and redo something you already rebuilt? Guess a I’ll see if I follow the rebuild?

    • @TrailerTrashtoTreasure
      @TrailerTrashtoTreasure  Рік тому

      Watch and see! But basically it's getting overused for the quality of work we originally put into it, so we're going to improve things, and fix the frame which we didn't touch originally.

      Ha ha, thanks for watching! We honestly could've kept using it as is, but there's things that we could see that needed addressing, and now was the time to do it.
