As most of you know, a few months ago we held a Kickstarter campaign for a show we wanted to make called Forbidden Explorers. We managed to raise $13,000 but were still shy of our goal, and since the campaign was all-or-nothing, we ended with nothing. All we had were a bunch of designs, plans, and ideas, but no funds to make them a reality- we needed a new approach. We decided to take some of the most practical ideas for the show and incorporate them into a new series on our channel using funding from our existing Patreon campaign, and that's what you're seeing here. It's a far cry from our original plans for Forbidden Explorers, but hopefully if this new series is popular enough, we can gradually sculpt it into something even greater! Anyway, let us know what you think! Also in about two weeks we'll be introducing another new series that focuses on the spooky and paranormal, so if that's your cup of tea stay tuned! If you enjoyed this new style of video and would like to see more, please consider joining our Patreon campaign. This style of video takes a lot of time and money to produce and we want to continue to increase our production value. patreon.com/theproperpeople

19:36 that pipe was probably leaking some sort of gas. In the USA (I don’t know about other countries) they added a smell that attracts vultures to gas. By doing this, the people would just look at where the vultures are and know where a gas leak is. (It would also explain why it stinks so much)
An old Army trick. Buy a luminous compass. From your start point shoot an azimuth or direction then move slowly towards your destination or objective so you can avoid obstacles. Its easy with 2 guys. One carries the compass and the other goes forward. The guy with the compass can tell the guy from a short distance of 25 yards or when he is visible to go left or right and stand still then move up. This can be done silently using hand and arm signals with stealth in mind. This is an old way of navigating in the dark before sunrise. I did this back in the dark forests of Germany and the jungles in Panama and thick bushes at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. It works.
standing bear simple logic. That’s the reason SF’s know and do what they do. Amateur hour here. Not even a Civilian Geiger counter? Too many Hollywood movies maybe? This actually got embarrassing and I felt bad for these two. A simple survival handbook/recon research might have been beneficial. Brass balls for going in dirty though.
So glad you never clickbait the titles and don't use fake stuff in the videos :) makes this channel so much more enjoyable to watch than people like exploring with josh etc xx
Usually when a nuclear plant reaches the end of its working life, it has to be sealed up due to radioactive contamination. But in this case, as the plant was never finished it never had any radioactive fuel - so no danger of irradiation!
Markokk888 I don't want to be there I just want to read more about it's history, I also couldn't go there because I live across the globe in Europe and travelling in the US just to look at a power plant maybe is a bit overkill.. bit if I'm not allowed to know, fine with me
Well HellFreeZ3r they can't tell you because it will spoiler the location to others that live in the US and with different reasons to be there probably not good ones.
Google about that incident mentioned in this video and other 7 power plants that also were never finished eventually you find out.. but for others there is no good reason to tell anybody.
I wonder if the security around there uses the vultures as cheap alarm system, when you see forty of them taking off maybe it's time to go listen for intruders... XD
Ehhhh highly doubt it was security because there is nothing really to guard or protect..I mean whose going to be able to steal a couple tons of scrap metal 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤦♂️... and it wasn't an abandoned nuclear plant, it was a cancelled nuclear power plant, the only thing that was completely built is the big ass cooling tower other than that not a,single core or reactor was ever completed so it was never active so it's no risk to anyone unless they fall and break their neck
They have one but they can't use it in sites that are actively patrolled by a security service like this one. It's too easy to spot and a dead giveaway of their presence.
In 2018 and beyond we still have people that don't realize the propaganda against both lead paint and asbestos is largely exaggerated and in many instances flat-out false. FYI the lead paint tastes very good and sweet. This is what was used to propagate the myth that there was some kind of epidemic of kids eating lead paint chips. Why the "war" against lead paint? Well, when applied to a properly prepped surface it can last for 50-100 years without fading or flaking. It generally offers more vibrant colors AND the metallic content insulates against radio waves, esp the high frequency radio waves used by cell phones, wifi and upcoming 5G. Asbestos, on the other hand, is one of the best insulators out there...but when you have massive buildings well-insulated how are you going to artificially drive up the cost of energy? I know, promote inferior insulators as being "safer" while simultaneously demonizing asbestos (as if you really think that breathing in fiberglass dust isn't going to have lasting effects).
@Alpha Force fibre glass is bad, but asbestos is worse, it gets on all your clothes and you can’t just wipe it off, only a fraction of it needs to get into your lungs to cause problems. I’m no asbestos expert but why else would most countries ban the use of asbestos insulation, and if any of it is found specialist removal costing thousands of pounds is required, doesn’t make sense. Btw do you have experience with lead paint or asbestos, just would like to know....
The round things you’re referring to as “reactor cores” is actually cooling towers.. Reactor cores are seated in concrete beds, where the actual fuel bundles are located.
The reactors weren’t finished so that’s why the concrete wasn’t surrounding it yet. You can see some concrete in construction around the second reactor at 19:50.
Usually gotta make sure both ends are on something. Seen people fall when getting close to one end and their weight lifts the plank causing the person to crash down because that side was floating.
@@Jemalacane0Which ones? I went in Sequoya when I took nuclear engineering classes in college. They needed a bunch of paper work to get in and even then most of the facility was off limits.
@@jackkollhoff9519 The amount of clearance you have to get to get in a nuclear plant is very strict. A Yellow vest, hard hat, and clipboard aren't going to get ya in. My cousin works for a power company and has had to go to nuclear plants. A guy went on a smoke break, that worked there, and nearly got arrested because he had to climb along some catwalks, unauthorized, when a door shut behind him. It was his only way to get back to an area with a door he could get into. All the doors lock automatically. They take security VERY seriously at these places. You'd have better luck storming Area 51 just about, without proper paper work anyway lol However, with proper paper work, or on a guided tour, it's possible and easy. Just no photography in most power plants in general, not just nuclear.
I always think to myself that really all we are doing is fighting mother nature. Keeping her from reclaiming what we call ours. Kind of a strange cycle.

This is in Hartsville, TN. It's sketchy because it's right by a high security prison, that's why the guard was there. Every time I go, all the fences are shiny and new because people use wire cutters to get in and explore
You are exactly right..this is right beside Trousdale Turner Correctional Facility (TTCC) which is one of the highest security prisons in TN (and one of the most dangerous) for sure!! But don't ask me how I know 😂
Out of all your videos this has to be my favorite. The contrast is amazing, geometric shapes and curves, the rust mixed with the vibrant green. Just stunning, thanks for this.
The most bizarre thing about a nuclear cooling tower, or any cooling tower for that matter is that when they are operational and you stand at the bottom, there is just a wall of water is pouring down inside because of the immense amount of condensation coming off of the steam pipes. It takes a very long trip through the cooling system to get the water used for generation back to a safe temperature to release into the local river. If memory serves from my brief time working on various nuclear sites, the discharge water can't be more than 82° Fahrenheit. Considering that open loop system can, I was told, hit over 320° nominal, that's a significant differential to make happen and stuff such as algae build up and even just an unusually hot summer can increase intake temperatures to the point where the existing cooling structure can't handle it. One project I worked on was basically adding another cooling tower to an existing plant because of similar reasons. The last one was assembling a 4th-level-redundant backup cooling system that could be plumbed in and powered by on-site diesel-powered generators in case of a total system shutdown. I didn't get to see the end of that project since the reactor it was designed for didn't go online until a few years after I left the business. Cool stuff, even if it is mildly terrifying to think about.
The reason you use a cooling tower is to not release water into a river. It's a recycling device. Hot springs empty into rivers as well. One set of hot springs I know of have water temperatures at 143ºF (62ºC).
What's fucked up is that not enough people are buying up my Impact a James Grider novel on Amazon so I can afford to move out of the desert into a forested area like where this nuclear power plant stands. It would be nice to write that someone falls into the cooling tower and before they hit the water on the bottom, the steam alone through which they fell causes their entire skin to float off their body in one fell swoop like a tablecloth yanked up by the wind.
Dude 1: Do you feel that tingling? Dude 2: Like pins and needles? Dude 1: You checked to make sure this reactor was never used right? Dude 2: I thought YOU DID!!!!
There was something I found odd throughout the entire video but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Towards the end I realized it was the complete lack of graffiti. Kinda refreshing, almost like you two were some of the only people to do this
The “pipes” you saw in the reactor are what would’ve held the graphite neutralizing rods and the core rods. They would’ve been able to move the graphite and the control rods in and out to control the rate of reaction.
are you sure? i don't know what type of reactor this is, but i'm pretty sure there were never any commercial graphite moderated reactors in the united states.
19:40 Probably the most beautiful part of the entire video. Such pretty lighting, the imagery of this massive concrete structure and the fleeting birds, the flapping of their wings and also that ethereal ambient music. Amazing.
This is by far the best ProperPeople Exploration Ive seen. The detail in what you cover with these reactors and the history of the place is impressive. Very aspiring youtubers
I know what red light is used for in a dark scenario and no, no it won't. It preserves night vision, prevents retina burn. It doesn't "enhance" night vision and it doesn't let you see when there is no light.
You see better with white light than red light. Red light only makes sense when preserving your night vision and preventing retina burn and other visual artifacts makes sense. When it is so dark without light that you can't see no matter no how - such as demonstrated in their infiltration of the site at 3am in the forest - Red light makes no sense. Red light would not help them here. They wouldn't see better, they would be just as visible to other people and just as blind when it was turned off. They were not suffering from disturbed night vision, they were suffering from total blackness. I'd put money on the prediction that they wouldn't have seen that spider if they were using red light. I'm fairly certain you don't actually have any experience with red light or any night blindness scenario besides in your bedroom at bed time.
security didn't catch them because there was none haha. side note whats the bet they recorded 10 mins of walking in the forest saw all the spiders and were like fck this lets just drive there haha and that's the car you see parked at the fence with the window down lolololol

Seems a shame the nuclear power station was never finished, would have cost a huge amount of money to get it to this stage. Great video guys, love to see more soon!
Mufasa Greatone. After the Three Mile Island accident and partial meltdown all Nuclear Reactors were hit with huge regulation changes. Reactors like this one under construction had the regulations change all the time it became to costly to keep up. No new Nuclear Reactors were ever completed and or brought online after TMI some were changed to gas fired power stations others were abandoned it really depended on how far construction was from completion. This one was cheeper to abandon then to continue as a conventional power plant. Here in Michigan the one in Midland was near completion but was never going to receive it's operation certificate so it was converted to natural gas in the mid 80's.
Excellent footage. Very large complex. Imagine the amount of concrete and steel to build a power station like that. Great choice of audio as well. Keep up the great explores.
16:41 4 out of the 7 are operational. The 3 abandoned ones are yellow creek, phipps bend, and hartsville, the one they are exploring. The 4 operational ones include browns ferry, sequoyah, watts bar, and bellefonte.
Holy Shit finally an explorers channel where the people actually know what they're talking about. I was impressed by the amount of knowledge you had about a nuclear power plant, most explorers will just make shit up because they have no idea what they're looking at. Great video
I agree...or at least they aren't ignorant like Exploring with Josh. It pain's me to here Josh muddle his way through his guesses of what things might be. But then most of his audience would likely loose interest if he actually did.
Those "pipes" you saw were actually disused control rods which would have regulated the reaction in the core. You actually entered the reaction chamber of the core.
Well done Corbyn, see Windscale never got you too far down man. Mind you walking into a control rod would have had me running out of there as fast as possible!
Completely false. Those were instrumentation drytube housings... the space he entered is known in the industry as “under vessel” because it is below the actual reactor vessel (the huge rusty cylinder) so the actual “core” where fission would’ve taken would start about 18 feet above his head on the other side of 9 inches of high carbon steel. -K Ps i work in the nuke industry (since 2012) as a non-licensed operator/ fuel mover. Not just a keyboard warrior, I’m extremely passionate about dispelling false information and myths surrounding nuclear power.
I found images of the construction of this place and concept art of what this place would have looked like if it was finished. I also found an image of the site in the early 70s before construction started
My dad and I throughly enjoyed both nuclear plant videos. My dad works at one, so this is quite intriguing. My dad had climbed of the cooling towers before, in fact he was one of the last to at his plant. He said after about the first 60 ft you're fine haha. And by the way, I appreciate your knowledge of the plant components. That's one of my pet peeves is to hear people misnaming parts and jumping to conclusions on nuclear power. Keep it up!
This is one of the most amazing videos I've seen on UA-cam. Stranger and scarier than most science fiction. The minimal use of music and sound was extremely effective. I also have to say the technology displayed is awesome even in ruins.Too bad we can't channel that know-how into something positive. I went through the Three Mile Island disaster and the plant was finally closed down last Friday. Maybe you can explore that at some point.
Any reactor that has (or had) radioactive material in it is going to be under very tight security. And the penalties for messing with that stuff are very high.
I LOVE your vids! No stupid 3:00 a.m. challenges or diss tracks or any other click bait. Just simple, beautiful videos on abandoned places along with the histories.....please, keep up the good works.....Peace.
You must have set off a silent alarm for the security guard to have shown up at this *abandoned* building. Only other way he could’ve shown up would be that him and other security guards show up every day to just make sure nothing sus happens
11:32 < looks to be the control rods... when in operation they are used to increase the reaction by raising them and slow down the reaction by lowering them. In case of a reactor SCRAM (sudden stop of reaction) they are quickly moved all the way in to stop the chain reaction so the reactor can shut down and cool down safely until the operators decide what to do next.
Probably channels for them, not the actual rods, but the control system was my first guess too. Diagrams and models never really give you the sense of scale the real thing presents.
This is the most perfect, incredible video seen on the Internet. People who created this video deserve great support and rewards for their efforts! I hope this video will be published on the National Geographic TV program or elsewhere! Thanks 🙂

Honestly the most incredible explore I've ever seen, and I watch * a lot * of these videos. Your channel is easily the best I've come across. And THANKYOU for the fantastic camerawork, for not talking too much and keeping it soft and informative, and for filming in 4K!!
This is the Hartsville Nuclear Plant in Tennessee. It is actually not that big, with each of the 4 buildings being about 3 and a half acres. Oh and that vehicle, it was watching the correctional facility next to it. Why they would walk an hour to get to the plant is questionable as their are open roads all the way around the building.
Man, I LOVE these abandoned places exploring videos. I've done it a few times myself and it is just so fascinating and mesmerising. Too bad that it's virtually impossible to explore abandoned places over here in the Netherlands, since the country is so tiny and overpopulated, nothing goes to waste and every square meter is pretty much immediately being used...

It works.
reddevilparatrooper Don’t forget to “shoot your back azimuth” and figure your pace count. Army land nav ftw.

There was one in the control room bathroom. It says "Dyatlov was there ".

Usually when a nuclear plant reaches the end of its working life, it has to be sealed up due to radioactive contamination. But in this case, as the plant was never finished it never had any radioactive fuel - so no danger of irradiation!
Satsop
Nope. When a reactor reaches the end of its life it gets de-fueled, disassembled, decontaminated, and buried.
@@pseudotasuki the surrounding building material is radioactive, due to the core. However the fuel does have a higher activity and longer half life.

Joshua Ayres Eh, how's the power plant called again?
It's called anonymous power plant! no one needs to be there. This video was made for that reason.
22:44 This frame would make such cool photo/wallpaper. Looks n feels so surreal.
You guys should get a drone so you can get footage of areas that you can't physically get to without dying, like those death trap rooms.
they do use a drone sometimes! i believe in one of their abandoned asylum videos one is used!
They have one but they can't use it in sites that are actively patrolled by a security service like this one. It's too easy to spot and a dead giveaway of their presence.
Taylor L. Yea like the New York Asylum video (Kings Park) they used a drone to get an amazing shot!

@@AverageAlien too scary to tell you.
Forget the lead paint and the asbestos - you scared the piss out of me by walking across those girders.
ikr
This dude likes his children lead free cause as far as he knows, they won't poison his peepee
@Alpha Force seems a bit far fetched, do you have asbestos and lead paint in and on your walls by any chance, just wondering
The round things you’re referring to as “reactor cores” is actually cooling towers.. Reactor cores are seated in concrete beds, where the actual fuel bundles are located.
There was already a cooling tower, looks completely different and too small
9:10 is the reactor core
The reactors weren’t finished so that’s why the concrete wasn’t surrounding it yet. You can see some concrete in construction around the second reactor at 19:50.
Go to go in unfinished tower (the huge one outside). Unbelievably big.
You're completely nuts for crossing those planks.
Yep, and very lucky that they held, not just once, but twice. Fortuna is a fickle mistress though chaps, so don't take too many more risks like that!
Ah, it would've been droll if they had to run across that shit while it's collapsing like Lara Cuntft.
Usually gotta make sure both ends are on something. Seen people fall when getting close to one end and their weight lifts the plank causing the person to crash down because that side was floating.
For some reason it didn't look scary for or maybe because i used to chill in half built building because the workers weren't around the weekend
Once i parkoured into a elevetor hole that is 5 times higher than me it had small metal sticking out and that's how a climbed up and down

It's not necessary in all cases. Some have tours.
You'd have better luck storming Area 51 just about, without proper paper work anyway lol

SkuzzyJ FUCKIN A! I like it!
intake temps are around 120-130 into the tower. discharge temps are about 80 depending on the time of year.

The “pipes” you saw in the reactor are what would’ve held the graphite neutralizing rods and the core rods. They would’ve been able to move the graphite and the control rods in and out to control the rate of reaction.
are you sure? i don't know what type of reactor this is, but i'm pretty sure there were never any commercial graphite moderated reactors in the united states.
US reactors do not use graphite moderators.

"Use the darkness to your advantage" meanwhile both are using white leds instead of red lights
Using red light won't make them magically invisible. Everyone else can also see the red light, you know.
Considering that you said that red light enhances your night vision, yeah, I think I can guess at your life experiences fairly accurately.
we all know that they should make a full swap to FLIR, that way they can see everything without emitting any light

Yep. Those reactor pressure vessels are probably the single most expensive items in such a project.

"Aperture Science... We do what we must, because, we can."
Certainly looks like control rod drive mechanisms
