Both the $1 and the $20 groups had already told a confederate that the task was fun (presumably a lie for all of them because a control group had rated the task as boring). The difference came in the survey that followed, which participants believed was not part of the study. In this survey the $20 group rated the task as more boring than the $1 did. This is somewhat counterintuitive and the setup is a bit complicated so I hope this helps to clarify.
