Watercolorist here. What I was trained - On blues - yes blue in general is a cool color. But within that - phthalo leans cool (closer to green than violet), ultramarine leans warm (closer to violet than green), and cobalt is generally a mid blue somewhere between them

I just adore these videos. Not a ton of people want to geek out over a color… ooooo, but I do 🎉

Blue is a cool color overall so in that sense ultramarine is cool. It is also a highly red leaning blue which some people call a warm blue.
Calling colors warm and cool is often flawed inherently. The warmest color is Orange. It’s a mix of two warm colors- red and yellow. Blue is the opposite of orange. It doesn’t get cooler than a middle colored blue- not purple or green leaning- just right in the middle.
Both purple and green are cool colors and are slightly warmer than blue because they are blue mixed with a warm primary color.
A red tinted blue and a green tinted blue are equally as warm as each other technically. Often times people refer to red leaning blues as ‘warm’. This is a shorthand that is technically incorrect if you also call a green leaning blue ‘cool’. Yellow is a warm color!
The best corse of action is to not to refer to different blues as warm and cool, but as RS or GS (Red shade/green shade)
Pthaylo blue has multiple variants of the pigment available. There are pthaylo blue rs and pthaylo blue gs and both of them are the pigment pb15! Often it is labeled as pb15:1 or pb15:3.
Ultramarine Blue is almost always red toned.

I'm a rainbow painter! But I'm working on using color for contrast and ambiance, even tho I often end up with very colorful works.
Weirdly, my favorite color is green but I've gravitated toward pink and blush as my default colors in my work for the past 5 years or so. Every time I think about a composition with a more vague background, I see it in a blush pink of some sort. I'm in my "pink period" 😂

Ultramarine is a warm blue because it biases towards red. Cerulean is cool because it biases towards green. Look on a color wheel to verify this.

Black -- Just like every other color, including white, all blacks are not the same. It's hard to tell, but I bought small tubes of different blacks and mixed them with my favorite white to paint value cards. In the greys, I saw shifts in color temps between the greys made by different blacks. I now use a "chromatic" black by Utrecht because I am confident it won't shift the temperature value of mixes when I use it to change values. (Note: I also did the same with a few whites & chromatic black and switched to Zinc white.) Neither make this the RIGHT answer, just laying out a process to find what is right for YOU!

I have a group of artist friends and one of the ongoing discussions for the last year or so is warm and cool in blues! I think Ultramine is cool, but one friend has been painting for over 30 years and swears it's warm. The interesting thing I found when I pulled out my books: the ones written by oil painters say cool; the watercolor artists say warm. Systems and sources based on Munsell's theory are also likely to say it is warm. I paint plein air and live in Minnesota. I also travel to FL. Lake Superior is Prussian and ultramarine blue in the mixes, Gulf of Mexico can usually be painted without opening either tube. But that's just my "bias" 🤣

Oops, one more thought. The watercolor artists that explain it to me, say "ultramarine is warm because I see more red in it." But there are warm and cool reds and I think it is a cool red totally dominated by a cool blue. I think it makes it "less cool" than Prussian Blue, but I use something else where I need a warm blue.

colour was and is to this day the only thing I am always sure of! Anthing else about my art, whatever medium I choose, is challenging most of the time. I am totally intuitive and just know what goes for me. But I enjoy to work with a limited colour palett because it is liberating. And I choose the scheme in advance.

I have studied watercolor with a teacher who has us use red, yellow and two blues exclusively and now I rarely use anything else unless I need a specific pink or purple.

I like the "Really bad" Watercolour painting, it's very good for a painting on the beginning of the journey.
Ultramarine still confuses me, and I don't know if it's warm or cold. Ultramarine has a special tone that somehow glows.

Awesome collaboration. Pretty much I will use the same technique with Procreate as with traditional. I’ll limit my pallet to a max of 7 colors for use on a project. And those colors change according to the subject. (With Procreate, oof! So many choices, so little time. Undo, undo. 😁)
If I don’t do that, I’ll end up staring for hours at all the paints (I have a lot) or in the case of Procreate a mass of undo(s) having choice “issues” & not accomplishing much of anything.

color issues? i paint what i see. is this painting what we think they look like as apposed to how they really look? because most green pears have a touch of red. grapes have shades and transparent light. i have no ability with digital. there is always a plan. i have a lot of colors but i only chose a few per project. i started in colors, i made pencil drawing with no #2 outlines. i had a bad 10 years and my my "blue period" was all in black and white. getting back into color took effort but it felt like coming home. guilty, i am a green fan. but it is everywhere in nature (my preference) so i get to use it alot. i use alot of phalo green but it is an old cheaper paint i just want to use up 😂 there is more than one ultramarine. french is def warm it has a red tone. i think it depends on the medium but i tend to make smaller batches (i'm cheap) and i am generally pretty good and gauging how much i need. left over can always make side projects. book marks are great. i don't use the wheel... maybe i should. white is rarely really white. i can't think of a color that scares me, but i don't like neon colors. i must use acrylics very differently from you. i love muted colors, they make the bright ones stand out that much more. a vid about shades of black? i'd go for it. i want to put an entire pallet of "black" watercolors together. in fact i already have few chosen and collected. have fun at the print conference!
