    My late bass player friend used to use felt picks. I used to buy them for him.

      I just love em so I thought I'd mention them... most other guitarists turn their nose up at em haha.

      TONE hey mate! Did you pick David Paul's mind about what Orpheus Pickups has to offer? 😁

    • @TONEonline
      @TONEonline  6 років тому +1

      Yes we had a few chats but it didn't go further than that at this stage. he seems like a nice guys... I've been turned off all noiseless pups from my tech who doesn't rate em. I'm thinkin' some Joe Bardens when I get some cash... I'm strapped right now:(

      TONE is say the fender noiseless stuff is fairly shrill and rubbish-which I'd imagine Brendan would agree with! Ha ha.
      But with Orpheus's money back guarantee, I'd say it's worth a try at least. Try your ears first, not your tech's, could be pleasantly surprised! 🙈😉
      It's a pretty, shimmery fat tone, not too glassy and shrill . He has a noiseless jazzmaster pickup in a Lapsteel which he built.. Sounds unbelievably pure.

    Oh man I can't wait to hear that Hummingbird. As for Jazzmaster pickups if heard Lollar makes good ones.

    Is the Jazzmater shielded in the cavity. I saw the nice pickguard was? It might help a little. Perhaps if thru the Axe8, being a computer it is more sensitive.. Great tips! Will try the felt picks! Cheers

    Argh! You threw me with that Fractal tremolo thingy! Was expecting you to say it was something vintage-y and tube-y :)

    • @TONEonline
      @TONEonline  7 років тому

      Haha I know right? I love old tube amps but it's so much easier for me to do the channel with the Ax-8. Thanks for watching! Matt.

    I recommend Kinman noiseless jazzmaster pickups. I use the Surfmasters in my Jazzmaster and they are identical to stock pickups. HIghly recommend them. I have a video in my channel with a demo of the pickup sounds if you're curious.

      Thanks James that seems to be the consensus so far... I failed to mention Curtis Novak does do some noiseless JM pups too. Just about to check out your channel and subscribe:) Cheers Matt.

      Ive heard really good things about the Curtis Novak JM pups as well. I would not be surprised if they are better or at LEAST on par with the Kinmans. Good luck with the hunt!

    For noisless pickups in general from my experience in a tele and strat I would recommend them though they do sound a bit warmer they still have the twang of a fender guitar.

    • @TONEonline
      @TONEonline  7 років тому +1

      Good to know I have no experience with them at all in any guitar. Thanks for watching and contributing! Cheers Matt.

    What shielding do you have on the Jazzmaster? I added some more in and switched to an anodized pickguard and that really helped with the hum

    • @TONEonline
      @TONEonline  7 років тому

      It's Rothstein pickguard with loads of shielding so that shouldn't be the problem. I also took the guitar back to the shop just to check that there's no earthing issues. Here 's here Rothstein page: www.guitar-mod.com/rg_pw_5jazzmaster.html

    Hey Matt - nice vid as usual. Re: Jazzmaster pups - contact David Paul from Orpheus Pickups in Balwyn Melbourne. There's not much he doesn't know and be able to achieve with his hand wound pups. Cheers!

      Hi Matt,
      I'll second Orpheus Pickups by David Paul.
      Can strongly recommend him for his incredible knowledge about guitars and Pickups!
      With 30 years experience as a sound engineer in the music industry, he has some great ears.
      Same components used by Lollar pickups in the States, hower you don't have to pay US dollar and US shipping!!
      Incredibly priced for the quality.

      TONE nice one Matt!
      Fairly confident you will be blown away.
      Pretty sure he laces his pickups with Cocain, as once you get a set of his pups, they start to get addicting. Ha

    My old RE20 has seen off lotsa challengers. Does the job well for a wide array of things.
    I'd second the Kinmans for noiseless JM pickups. (I've played a Jazzer with 'em but don't own a set myself.) My impression is that they lack some of the air you get with proper single coils, but I guess that's the tradeoff…

      Hey Marvo it's preset sound on my Fractal Audio AX-8 - it's using a Leslie speaker simulator and gives it a bit of organ tone. Thanks for watching! Matt.

    Regarding the Jazzmaster pickup noise complaint (2:13) , I once read an article about the development of the Jazzmaster and I recall one of the major complaints was that "the pickups buzzed louder than a nest of hornets".

    • @TONEonline
      @TONEonline  6 років тому

      Haha yes I'd agree with that comment... I'm going to try using copper tape inside the cavity to see if I can kill a few of those hornets:)

    • @jltrem

      I'm about to shield another strat this week due to unwanted buzz. Out of the four strats I own, only one doesn't need shielding and I have no idea why.

    • @TONEonline
      @TONEonline  6 років тому

      It's weird isn't it - there should be a show called Myth Busters for guitars:)

      My house was built in 1945. I have more noise if the amp is plugged into a certain outlet but not another. Had an addition to the house built in 2002. Still have buzzing in some outlets there. My basement amps don't buzz. Had a strat that buzzed when hands weren't touching strings or metal parts. Took it to two different guitar repair shops. Didn't buzz at either of them. Yes, quite maddening.

      I'm renting an old house at the moment which has an old fuse box... my guitars buzz there like crazy. My work warehouse I reno'd recently with new wiring and curcuit-breaker box and the guitars are generally pretty good.... except the JM which has 60 cycle hum everywhere!

    I have tried a felt pick once and I think if you do a lot of hybrid picking they're not great

    • @TONEonline
      @TONEonline  7 років тому

      Haha I understand they're not every bodies cup of tea:)

      It's just when you're using your fingers at the same time there's such a huge difference in sound and volume it doesn't work

  •  7 років тому

    What effect was that at 0:26?

    • @TONEonline
      @TONEonline  7 років тому

      It' an amps preset out of my Fractal Audio FX-8 - basically an old tube amp style with some drive and a Leslie Speaker simulator giving that organ sound. Thanks for watching! Matt.

    Add a dummy coil to the J.Master

    don't waste money on noiseless, just shield the guitar. either only the control area of the cavity, or the entire cavity. the change in tone will be unnoticeable. noiseless pickups will just sound different.

    • @TONEonline
      @TONEonline  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the advice - funnily enough the cavity is being shielded and earthed at the moment:) Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! Matt.
