I had the pleasure of meeting Bart face to face when I made a stop on my vacation in 1997, and let me tell you... I've never met a gentler, kinder, and more monstrously sized creature in my life. All Doug needed to say was "Bart, get angry" and you'd think that bear was about to eat you whole. But the Doug would say "easy, big guy" and he'd literally turn into a big teddy bear.
Bart’s 23 years on this planet were filled with love, attention, enrichment, and FOOD. He was the most hardworking and the most talented bear that has ever appeared on camera. Even 23 years after his passing, his legacy is still going strong. Rest easy, big fella. ❤

Do you ever think about our ancestors for a moment, maybe there was a man like Doug 1,000 years ago who tamed a wild bear cub, fostering a kindly bond together. Then think about how his community would view him, or anybody really. Compare that to how he's viewed today. Today he is a kindred man to these bears, and it makes us all reflect positively on life and all creation. Back then, Doug would be like a druid shaman god-speaking woods traveler. He'd probably be socially ostracized, but spiritually revered and confided in by those who sought him out of piety. It would be a strange world.
Was blown away *spoilers alert* When they kill the bear he lays down on a tree trunk and gives an amazing death stare. He truly was an incredible actor! What an achievement and legacy.
I know EXACTLY the feeling that you felt when you lost him. People say, " I will never have another animal or whatever in my life because it is too painful" but life isn't worth living without them.
When I let a huge dog's powerful jaws near my face I can't help but think about how they can just kill me at any moment. This guy is on another level of trust. Love it.
I really love Bart. I was so fascinated by him in the movie "The Edge!". Such scary scenes in that movie being stalked by a grizzly like that. If animals get Academy Awards, Bart really deserve one for this picture. While looking him up I was very sorry to hear that he's no longer with us.
Bob Liggett Animals do get "academy awardds". They're called "Cleo Awards". I'm not sure when these awards were started. But, Bart certainly deserved a few. :)

I had the most awesome experience of meeting Doug and Bart, just before Bart died. I will never forget that day. It is one thing to hear about a beautiful animal so large and majestic. It is another thing to meet and see him face to face. I still remember his favorite toy......a Rubbermaid garbage can, Thanks Doug and Bart.
This video is so moving. They loved Bart so much and he loved them. I am astounded how he is able to train bears. I didn’t think it was possible. Beautiful

I fell in love with Bart the Bear when I saw him in THE BEAR and it broke my heart when I heard of his death. This is such a touching video of Doug and Lynne speaking about Bart. I understand EXACTLY what Doug meant when he told of Bart's last breath in his face. Three years ago, I lost my 14 year old Australian Terrier to cancer. She put up a good fight, but let me know when it was time. I truly believe that until a person has loved an animal, a part of their soul remains unawakened.
