David Landsel says the traffic can be atrocious, the Vanderbilt estate is soulless, famous hotels are average and overpriced, and of course the food...well Landsel says it's just fine. The hipster with the short hair is right. Most people are transplants from some other place. I think the locals see what's happening. All this exposure is going to turn Asheville into L.A. That happened to Miami, Orlando, Seattle, Ann Arbour. So they decided to pack up and leave. Everything about Asheville is beautiful; scenery, people, art, etc. You know what happens when things get exposed. I'm from L.A. (I'm almost 30) and getting ready to move and settle. Looking at a diff. city in N.C. one that's not in the news. N.C. is absolutely beautiful. Some places like LA, NY, Chicago are just good for visiting, not living

Wow! I forgot about this comment! So much has happened. I moved to Portland OR in 2014 for 6 wks. It sucked. Went back to LA to redo my move. I finally settled down in Denton, TX. It's like mini-Austin. It's everything you see in this vid except it's flat. No hiking. That's a small price to pay for good weather, scenery, job growth and economy. Asheville has no jobs and is getting expensive.

I now know why Southerners hate Northerners. The cold weather make Northerners depressed, angry assholes. They lack vitamin D. Denton is perfect! Except no more hiking. I just have to commute a little for a hike.

MR.X I hated living up Nawth. I reckon people were not very friendly, y'all. I am glad I have lived in Virginia longer than I lived in the North. I thank my family for moving here all those years ago. BTW North Carolina is my second favorite state after Virginia.

They are both right. While it is beautiful and can be fun, regardless of personal opinion, Asheville is riddled with poverty, has a huge homeless population, a high turn over in business, is deficient in city planning and infrastructure development. It's a tourist town that depends mostly on the seasonal draw while sprawling development can never sustain. Asheville suffers year after year from over hype and over flow. So depending on the day and the mood you hit it, defines your experience. I loved it while I was living there, but like so many before and after me ended up running for my life to survive. I still have fond memories and a couple friends. But everyone I know who lives there, from musicians to pastors to retailers to business owners, is in a constant state of struggle.

I grew up in Asheville and I finally got to leave and see the world. I'm so glad I did. I hate Asheville overall as a town. There are some nice spots to see. I would actually recommend it as a weekend trip, but then get out after a few days. The Biltmore Estate is a cool site, but the city is way overrated.

People moving here is what is causing Asheville to be not so great. Everyone posting on here about how great it is that they have to move is the problem. Can't you just visit? All the people flooding in and tearing down the mountains is really becoming a problem. Please don't move here.

OK I just have to disagree 100%, no 1000% with the Huffington Post bloggers comments!!!
I first went to Asheville about 6 years ago and fell head over heels in love with the place - because it is like no other place I have ever been to - anywhere inside or outside of the U.S. and I have traveled extensively.
On my second trip to Asheville 6 years ago I bought a vacation rental cabin just so I could continue to come to Asheville on a frequent basis. Very soon after that I decided to move there from NY (I currently live about an hour north of NYC) and have since then purchased land just outside of downtown Asheville and am working to sell my house and make the move down there.
What makes it so special? A very long list of things including the warmth and friendliness of the people there, the moderate climate; the awe-inspiring beauty of the Blue Ride Mountains; the 100's of great restaurants, dozens of breweries, wine bars etc; a thriving arts and music scene; it's endless array of outdoor activities; the lower taxes and homes prices compared to the northeast; the progressive and eco-friendly nature of the city and the majority of it's inhabitants - and just the overall feeling of this gem of a town nestled in the mountains.
Was this blogger even in the same city that I've now been to over a dozen times and have NEVER ever been let down by???

Having visited the Estate I can assure you it's not "soulless". It's a rare preserved example of the gilded age, and the guy who owned it did a lot of good for the area and the nation via his school for forestry.

This is a tough one. I lived in Asheville for about 9 years. Moved there to go to college, which was a fantastic experience, but I was probably limited by dorm life. It wasn't until I graduated and started off on my own that I really got to experience Asheville. Some memories I have of this place are wonderful and incredibly emotional for me to recall (in a good way). Granted this guy's review is probably based on some sort of one-time bad experience or reading negative reviews that others have written, but I must say it is a tough environment to survive in. The city is becoming more and more expensive to live in each day. Definitely not a good place to raise a family. Asheville sort of overtakes you; runs your life in a way. As you get deeper into the living experience, you begin to let the culture define you. It's tough to move up or succeed because the job market is not the best there. I personally got too immersed in it and lost track of myself and my life for a while. On the other hand, once I had moved away and then came back to visit, I truly appreciated the city as I got to experience it as a tourist and not a resident. In short, great place to visit, not so much to live in. At least, this has been my experience...

They are pretty much giving jobs away now, the issue is they are all in service industries (hotels, restaurants, tourism). What we need is sustainable tourism that promotes local businesses, settles those who want to move here in our outlying towns (Waynesville is beautiful too folks), and doesn't require (let's be honest, it was never required) five new hotels to come in. An improved infrastructure wouldn't hurt either, because the loop into town is atrocious.

  • @nolanm6500

I think some people have trouble grasping the fact that Asheville is a functional large town/small city in its own right and would still exist without tourism. There is traffic, garbage, unfriendly people, etc along with the obvious tourist traps.

I totally agree, I had never been to Asheville and had no idea, two days there and I could'nt believe how beautiful and welcoming and just all around awesome and cheerful, pleasant and mellow the city and the vibe of the people were. Can;t imagine anyone thinking its not an incredible place!

It's a great city in it's own right (I live 10 minutes away from it), but it's not for everyone. If you're not into local art, food, or US history and are not a very "outdoorsy" person, it's probably not the place for you. Hendersonville is a better general tourist destination in the area, while the Skyland area has become one of the primary commercial hubs in WNC.

Yeah, I only lived in Denver for 8 months in 2012, but I found lots of craziness going on. I mean I had fun, lots of things to do and most people are fairly friendly, but the Dark Knight shooting happened while I was there and I was almost run over by cars about 20 times when trying to cross the crosswalk in heavily pedestrian areas downtown. Violent crime has increased over the last 10 years in Denver while nonviolent crime has gone down.

I live in San Diego CA .I just got back from visiting my sister in North Carolina Nov 2018 .Driving back to California from north Carolina I did drive through Asheville North Carolina ,beautiful little town.I didn't make any stops since I was driving back to CA and pressed for time .Drove on through the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee ,all that area of Ashville and the Smokey mountains was beautiful. With the fall season and leaves on trees changing it was beautiful. In my opinion it just comes down to what a person likes. We all don't have the same opinions and views on certain things. I like Green you like red, Which color is better. We all have opinions ,choices etc.

I really really like Vancouver, BC. Its calm, almost no violent crime (but thats Canada). The worst thing is the price especially liquor prices. Vancouver is most expensive in North America in terms of real estate. I would probably rank Denver higher than all the other places I lived, but personally if I was going to stay in the US I think I'd go to Portland, OR. No sales tax in Oregon, everything is pretty cheap and its fairly laid back. I'm not crazy about the southeast US at all. No jobs

I wonder why News 13 paid any attention to this little known blogger. Maybe because the Huffington Post gave him a platform, they obviously need to pick their travel bloggers more carefully. There are many legitimate criticisms of Asheville, none of which were mentioned by this blogger. Also the time you have is largely based on your attitude (bad attitude, bad time).

Out of all the places you've lived where was/is your favorite? I'm from Buffalo and live by Durham NC now. moving up north next year.
I think the key is to find a small town that has yet to peak. Denver seems too overcrowded now due to the hype but I have only been to the airport, lol. Vancouver seems way too huge but definitely one of the best right?
I would love to own an art gallery in Vermont and ski all the time.

Although Asheville is the jewel in the nile and the Outer Banks has some great spots when its not too crowded.
Just my opinion from one person. If you're from a small town or really bad area than NC might be for you. I'm also pretty jaded so maybe I attract bad experience with my bad attitude. Plus i live in a little b.s. town next to Durham.
Thus I have to move back north. bye bye

Let me correct you my friend. Yes, cities in Florida like Miami, Orlando has that plastic mentality, but there are great cities in FL to live in thats an escape from that. I am from FL and I lived in Asheville; yes the surrounding areas are beautiful but in order to have an easy life up here you have to be making some cash. Especially nowadays where there's a lot of rich people flocking here and the rent price in Asheville is not far off from Orlando. Even higher! I wish the best for you and your family and hope you do well up here. I didn't see anything so special about this town during my time here.
