Brett took me fishing yesterday. You were remembered and there was still one of your leftover beers hanging around in the jump seat. We'll save it for November.
I really REALLY enjoy this format. Going over mistakes and observation from hindsight is such a great way to learn. Also loved that bit about the dopamine. That's the name of the game, always chasing that high! Videos getting better and better, man.
Honestly Ben- your best video. Thanks for sharing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, Ben. I really enjoyed the back and forth and learning more about the salt.
Happy Huge day everyone!
You too man🤙🏼😎
This was really cool. I like the "postmortem" type commentary. Also really like the longer videos recently. And I know I'm in the minority but MORE SALT.
A lot more “pros” should make videos like this and point out their own mistakes! Great vid bud! shows you’re human and mess up like we all do. Thanks for the great content Ben!!
“Found the right fish that was feeling suicidal”
😂😂
Hit the nail on the head! I lol’d
Enough with the lukewarm comments. This was one of your best videos ... ever. The back-and-forth format between fishing and postgame commentary really worked well for this.
Love this video. "You learn more from the fish you don't catch than the ones you do." This video is a really cool concept. I hope to see more videos like this. Stay Huge.
Thanks for the video. I won’t feel so bad when I don’t catch anything this weekend fishing in the Keys. Any day on the water is better than not fishing.
I like that he straight up says he makes mistakes. Even a 30 year OG doesn’t know everything
dude what you said in the intro is so true. Back in college I had some problems with drugs and fishing was the only thing that felt better than any high I could smoke or snort.
If not catching fish is a learning opportunity I'm a friggin genius ....Move over Einstein..
It’d be cool to see more videos like this, it’s just like a sport, rewatching film to figure out what went right and wrong. Super helpful for anyone starting something new, or for people who have some experience to refine their techniques
Great video, reminds me of the time I went Rooster fishing down in Baja. was not on my game, rushed my casts and did uncharacteristic things. Got skunked. Glad to see a video that isn’t all about catching and shows the reality of the saltwater game
Hah. This whole video pretty much sums up my last Belize trip. 0 fer a thousand. I remember making all those mistakes. Awesome stuff Ben.
Awesome bud! Totally got the adrenaline watching
33:37 Don't beat yourself up. Chef says "Never get out of the boat" (Apocalypse Now). Did you try midges??
Do you need a permit to fish for Permit ?
One of your best videos to date Ben. Thanks!!
Man I love seeing that clear water!! A lot of good information! Can’t wait to see the video of the new boat!!
Great vid ! Really enjoy the saltwater stuff!
Hey Ben, Tom from NJ here. Thanks for sharing this ‘reality video’. I’m heading to Belize in March and there’s some bucket list potential involved. You successfully brought me back down to earth by showing how permit fishing is more like spotting a fish and screwing it up somehow. Now I feel strangely enlightened and disenchanted. Maybe, hopefully, not likely, I’ll get lucky too. Good stuff!
Awesome video for general cast and approach improvement bro! Love it. Thank you!
Hey man come to Jacksonville Beach Florida this spring/summer
I'll put you on some sight fished reds in the surf. you just seem like a good dude to fish with haha
I’ve fished with Johan. Good guy, fun to fish with when you’re a huge fly fisherman. I hear he’s the guy to go after permit with. I learned a lot going out with him.
Ben, love the drinking problem section at the end, where you think you're talking to no one, but really we are out here!
What boat do you have and what part of the keys did you fish?
This analysis type video was really cool
Great vid, Mr Huge!
Has anybody gone through the description?😂
Should of put on a wooly bugger lol
Yes, he should have!
This is pretty much the toughest game in fly fishing.
Bro spotted more permit than the guides up poling 😭
Always entertaining
Feels so good! Stay huge 🤙🏼
did ya notice the "fog bow" (8:39)?
the f-bomb anglers...
Great video man
Too good at fishing? Bored with fun fights and big catches?
Boy, do we have the thing for you: Permit.
😂
All jokes aside, this is a bucketlist fish for me. These and bonefish. I wont stop thinking about them till I catch one.
awsome mr ben!!1
Tea kettle and a gaze on that Cuban permit, and I ain't mad. I would have given myself Bell's Palsy if I caught that, so I could've done the tea kettle, gaze, and scream at the sky all in one.
I was supposed to be in Key West last week but cancled thanks to the Vid. One thing, can you show what flies you are using? I'm always interested and think it would be an added bonus to your videos. Keep 'em coming!
Great video. I’ve been flats fishing once in key west. Awesome and frustrating. You have grass carp in CO? If you’re looking for big fish that fight like crazy and are real difficult to catch, they’re worth a go.
I'll be damned if I'm going to need a permit to fly fish! Don't ask me about all of the licenses that I buy throughout the year... Stay Huge - Cheers!
Nice video, like it! It seems simular to sea trout fishing in the European Baltic Sea. Only difference, the sea trout you mostly don't see. So the take comes out of nowere. You might have to think about a stripping basket or "box" to reduce the hazzle with the shooting line...
Holy Cats!! That was an epically good episode! Thanks, man. Take Rudy everywhere...
Permit are such cool fish. I have only had a few shots at them, but those have been some of the most exciting moments in fly-fishing for me. The only one I have caught was a pie-plate-sized fish, and a barracuda smashed it off my line about 15 ft in front of me. I still got the fish in my hands, albeit missing its tail...
Worst mistake I have ever made was cranking up the boat to get to a tarpon feeding in the flats. I should have polled closer....
Thanks for posting a vid showing how your fishing magnet was broken, like the rest of us. You’re one step closer to being the new Bill Dance.
well at least you had a tibor,in case you hooked one of them shady, rubber lip, middle finger to angler, fishes.
Glad to see someone teaching something other than casting. I agree with others that cutting back and forth between fishing and analyzing what went wrong was a helpful format. Befitting of a permit video for sure, but it would be welcome on a video about any species or technique or whatever.
That coach's corner format is awesome especially on species most of us can't fish often !!!
You still need practice to get as obnoxious as Don Cherry, though...
So great to see actual casting and not just bringing to hand. I'm trying to DIY bone fishing and I learned so so much from this. Mahalo.
Never had so much fun watching a fishing video without fish! Nice going, Ben. You're a permit fly fisherman now.
Great video and I enjoyed this format. I have never been to the Keys and your guides and friends were great. Thanks.
Awesome video and format! There's no better way to learn than getting more experience and others can also learn from you going over your mistakes. I would love to see more of these. Can't wait til I get a chance to sight fish for permit sometime!
This is like Musky fishing. You feel like a masochist after a while and you have to stumble on a fish willing to commit suicide and then you might still screw it up. But the rush when it happens is real.
Ass proper clinched when you got out of the boat!!!! How glamour was that day too!
Dude, my heart was in my throat during that first legit shot. Couldnt tell distance but looked like your casting is pretty damn good to me. Love this style and pov!
Another lesson I learn here is even though you are experienced as you are Ben you still listen to Brett coaching you. Great video this week thanks!!!
Permit suck but they get the dope flowing! Great video!
Mornin Ben. If I had a dollar for every fish I missed cause I was too busy focusing on beer . . . . . ?
What rod/reel/line sizes were you using?
9
Did you call your fly rod....a fish pole? Hahaha, that's so butter!
maybe the next saltwater trip could be chasing tails in charleston sc in spring
Great vid!
Big fan of this format! Looking forward to learning even more from this channel
No Lonestar hat? Basically asking to get skunked.
It's okay Ben, I suck at fly-fishing too! 😊
To be fair, I'd be too busy fixing wind knots to get a shot off lol
Funny how I had a moonshine rod commercial and ben is not a fan of them lol
Can you talk more about the patterns used? Great video.
If you’re going to make a mistake make it HUGE
Absolutely love it Ben! I learn so much from your videos
Does Greg have a twin brother? He looks just like someone else I know.
I rarely/never actually see the fish
This video gave me anxiety and got me pumped.
4th. I had to rewind twice on the photo of the permit at the beginning.
Are you in the keys?! I am too! Dude let’s fish!
Surprised you didn’t get one with that button on your hat 😎
New sticker: Dopamine feels good
reminds me of my first day of musky fishing.
Is that a Sage Maverick?
The closest I have come to a permit is a pompano!
Pretty cool and informative
Nice. Huge and going fishing today
Who has the best fried chicken?
This post mortem format is excellent.
Ben this was great. Permit in the Keys are legendarily difficult for all of the reasons that you show so well. Hard for all of us not to learn what not to do as you break it down afterwards. Great format and I learn from this for sure. What flies were you tossing? Crabs or Shrimp?
Thanks, Frank. Johan had me throwing a shrimp the first day, then we fished a strongarm crab the next two days.
Where u get your fried chicken?
Ur boat looks like a big Terlet bud
He’s still a lot huger than me
That was fun. And nice hat
Did you try fishing any live shrimp? Try that next time.
Make my Monday !
Ben-we are really here. We are living our fishing fantasies vicariously through you, and learning lots of fishing and life lessons along the way. I have, it turns out, caught a few permit on the fly. All of them were due to superior guiding, dumb ass luck, and the Grace of God. Thanks for your honesty and your vulnerability.
PS-that's the famous Hot Rod from the most romantic thread on what used to be the Drake.
Thanks for watching, Bill!
The fog bow at 840ish deserves a shout out.
It was really cool. It was like that for over an hour.
PUPPY!
What reel did you like out of all of the ones you used?
I’ve used Tibors a lot, and they’re always great. First time using a Mako, and I liked the fine drag adjustment, but I did not get to test out that drag on a fish.
