- This customer got their RV out of storage and the rear AC won't run, it only hums. This is a common call in the spring, but this turned out to be an uncommon problem. Watch to see what we found.

So it's summer and my Coleman Mac AC in my motorhome has been shutting off and making that humming noise every so often but I would turn it off for awhile and it would come back on but tonight it did it and wouldn't come back on,I spun the fan manually and it immediately came back on! Thank you so much
Story time! You saved the day. First time owning a motorhome and all was well until the fan quit turning on the AC last night. This was the very first video I watched and your solution is so simple, there was no way it was going to work. Well, I'll be darned, it freakin' worked! I didn't have to get on the roof either, I just turned the fan by hand and she started working. Thanks for the video.
Awesome
Thanks for the info! I had two huge wasp nests in the outside unit preventing the fan to turn.
Wow! You LITERALLY saved both my life and my pupper’s life! We are in an excessive heat warning right now and both were starting to get dehydrated. Thank you thank you thank you! 🫶
Glad I could help.
Man I had no idea a bird could even get up in that area. Bees like you said but not birds that's different. Good work sir.
It got in there somehow.
I am new to the RV life and know absolutely nothing about EVERYTHING!! I’m currently in Oklahoma going through one of the hottest summers I’ve ever experienced. Today we got a lot of rain and the evening was sort of chill, so I decided to move my AC from high to low (which I thought it was to give it a break.) that turned into 4 hours of not turning back on and the unit just humming (in times very loudly.) I’m not shy to say that my anxieties made me cry cause I didn’t know what to do. THANK YOU!! The first step of this video fixed my issue (checking the fan) and now I can relax a bit. I’m still a bit emotional as it is 1:30 in the morning and I’m alone with no knowledge about anything. So once again… THANK YOU!!
PS: When you said “See what’s going on, fix the issue, and move on with your life” THAT GAVE ME THE COURAGE!! 😅
Awesome
I know this is an old video, but I gotta thank you anyway. I’m building a bbq trailer and really needed some AC the other day. I turned the knob and got nothing but hum. I used your advice and gave the fan a few spins by hand and she fired right up. I’ll remember this when it’s 95 out and I’m staying frosty. 👊🏻
Cool
See what I did there?
welp, now I know I have to replace the fan motor, my fan hums in all fan positions, no obstructions.
Welp, that sucks.
@@hillbillyrv ya, especially since I live in my RV.
Everytime I watch your video's I learn something new, when I get a camper, I will have been trained by the best... Thanks for the knowledge
You are welcome
You the man!!! Birds nest! Back up and running! Thank you! 🙏
Sometimes I am the HERO and sometimes the ZERO.
Today's the first time ever watching your videos & this one definitely helped us! We couldn't figure out why our AC wasnt kicking on but kept making humming noises, sure enough there was a nest of some kind & our fan was stiff. Thank you so much! ❤
Cool
Thanks for the knowledge 💪👍💯
Old video, and it helped me, I had the same problem you had in this video, thanks for making these!!
Glad I could help
Nice video! Thanks for your time and sharing! 👍😎✌️
You are welcome.
You, sir, are a vacation saver. I arrived at the campground expecting hubby to have everything set up since he had a two hour head start on me. Arrived snd almost nothing had been set out. He daid i have been yryingbto fix the ac. Eell after google searching varios topics happened in your video here. It worked! Did not go up on yop yet as it is nighttime, thinking it might just be rust but will check to make sure no critter made a nest in the unit. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. ❤
Awesome
Yee Haw! You rock man, fixed my AC fan from inside with guidance from your video. Fan inactive for several months, spun it by hand, vacuumed away the cobwebs and dust. Fired right up, sounds better than last time we used it. Have a great day!!! Thank you very much.
Awesome. Please subscribe if you haven’t already.
Thank you.
Got out to deer camp for the first time this season where I needed the AC. So yea it’s been 6 months.
AC just humming.
I’m on 50A but another trailer melted a 30a on the same pole as mine.
Thought I wasn’t get my full amps.
Decided to check the blower wheel like you did and sure enough both stuck with mud dobbers.
30a is getting fixed tomorrow but your view saved me.
THANK YOU!!
🍻👍🏽💯
Awesome
Thank you for this video. This is what was wrong with mine exactly!
Cool
See what I did there?
Bought a used RV with a Coleman AC
It didn't turn on, figured it was late in the evening I'll mess with it tomorrow.
Next morning it was running and it was ice cold!
Figured it just took a while for the capacitors to charge up.
LUCKY ME!!! 😊😊😊
Yay!!!!
Thank you for doing this video! - Samuel
You are welcome
Man you just saved my 4th. After watching your UA-cam video I pulled the cover and found a big dirt dobber dirt nest on the fan keeping it from turning. After cleaning it off the AC fired up and is working great. Thanks again, you have another subscriber. Happy 4th! 🎆 🎇
Awesome. Happy 4th to you as well.
Thanks! New to RV stuff so I bought one in really nice condition and ran into the same problem. 90 here today. I watch your video when Up on the Roof, moved the blade with a crowbar because I didn't feel like looking for a hex screw to get the cover off didn't take much effort I really wasn't optimistic and then I came down turned it on and now it's nice and cool in here. You rock!
So you didn't have much faith in me? 🤣
@hillbillyrv much faith! I subscribed too! 😉
@@joetrolo7076 Awesome
@hillbillyrv new problem, it's blowing the 20 amp house fuse. Strange thing is, the first time it was on, it ran for about an hour and blew strong and cold. Now it blows after 5 minutes or so. I'm guessing house circuit breaker fuse needs to be raised to 30 amps...(30 amp trailer) I'll get my housemate on it, but do you think any of that could be related to the RV? I've turned off just about any power draw and switch the refrigerator to propane and it still blows the fuse.
Thanks!
Thanks for this video! Removed inside cover, gave the fan a good spin, works like new!!
Awesome
Thanks brother your take it apart and spinning the fan worked perfectly our ac is back up and running your video put me on the cheese in less than 5 mins of watching your video thanks again brother just subscribed too look forward to watching more vids 👍🏽 and they are funny too by the way gotta have a sense of humor hahahahahah all the best buddy take care and happy camping
Awesome. Glad I could help.
Thanks you so much for this video 😊
You are welcome.
Better a bird's nest than a wasp nest! I would hate to try and get off that roof in a quick minute. I love your videos and even more would love to come and work with you for a day or three. Thank you for the down to earth knowledge.
Bees don't bother me. I think it would be great if you want to come work with us.
@@hillbillyrv really? That would be so great! Where would I find you and I will have to make a plan. It would be an awesome way to spend some vacation time.
@@karenbickel1154 I am in Southern WV
Excellent! Just what I needed. 😅
Awesome. Glad I could help.
Great Job!!! Very informative!!!
Thanks
When I pull the camper out of storage I always go up on the roof take the ac cover off clean out the mud bugs nest then start the ac up put the cover back on and we are good for another camping trip
Thanks for all you do.
Thats smart
Thank you great straight forward video
You are welcome
Success is nice. You did it again.
Yes it is. Thanks
All our house air conditioners I hot glue aluminum window screen inside all the vents on the outside. Having cleaned many AC's on the inside because we live in the woods they fill up with time air flow blocking dirt, bugs and twigs greatly reducing the cooling capability. Add we often have the dreaded "stink bug" invasion years with one side of our house black with stink bugs. So hot gluing window screen inside keeps all very very clean and smelling lol better! I line up the screen precut and when done it looks factory installed and the cooling fins inside have stayed clean for 16 years now on the big old 15,000 unit. Now all I hath to do twice a year is slide the AC's out of the window removing from the shell and spray from the inside of the house outward cleaning the screens in 30 seconds. Sure beats hours of cleaning done prior per AC. But to fasten aluminum window screen inside a RV AC case I would likely use pop rivets with washers inside then form it flat and add the hot glue to finish because of road vibration. To me it is worth the work if the owners will do it. But we know few ever would.
It's a lot better for us service guys to do nothing like that....wink wink
I'll check the coils, just to sure. 😊
Ok
Thanks! Mine was packrats….
Awesome. We don't have those here, at least not the 4 legged variety.
do you have the DeWalt Battery operated vac for those roof jobs? when I ran a installation crew, every truck had one for cleaning the jobsites and they held up very well.
No. I only have an electric shop vac on the truck. Maybe I should get a battery one.
I have a 2002 Everest by Keystone and my ac is humming but not blowing any air
I would try spinning the fan.
Nice job I haven’t seen a bird nest in one yet but I have seen a rats nest.
I love critters.
Hmm so I have a glacier bay 318es, the ac is controlled by knobs as well, doesn't cool though, when I hit the breaker while the motor is off it hums. The fan operates when I turn it on, when I turn the knob to cool it does not cool it continues to hum. I live in Miami I need help bad it's extremely hot.
Never heard of a Glacier Bay roof air.
WOW a bird nest I find a wasp nest and they chase me off the roof then I get the spray to kill the pest LOL
Wasps only hurt a little.
Hi! mines just like this and it’s stiff - nothing up there blocking it like a nest. motor is HOT! what could this be?
(previously the fan would squeal sometimes)
Bearings are going bad in the fan motor. Try to lube it. You have nothing to lose.
My AC only work on high.. when I put low fan only make humming noise and than generator goes off.. any advise please.. thank you
The low side windings could be bad in the motor. I have no idea why it would shut the generator off. Just run it on high.
Did you say a bees nest? Like a beehive? I think you'd know ...
The ACs are always full of bee's nests and bees.
I just thought you'd know right away lol....I just found the start of TWO new wasps nests in my air conditioner. When I turn on my AC, I get a humming sound and then nothing. The fan nor rotor on motor turns. What do you think it is? There wasn't any obstruction in the fan.@@hillbillyrv
It's hard to say for sure. I have several AC videos, maybe something in another video might help. @@IamLilibel
Mine hums but I can spin it and when it turns off it hums again until I spin the fan I changed the capacitor but it’s still doing the same thing
Maybe the fan motor is bad.
Ok thanks
If my motor hums, gets a little louder.. Then sounds like it dies out after about 5min..then won't turn back on for a few min. But then does the same thing. Do you think it would be the same situation? Or does this type of issue the ac just keeps humming and stays humming? Appreciate the response in advanced!
I would say you have a different problem. You need to monitor the power coming into the motor. If the power is constant but motor stops then you probably have a bad fan motor.
Wish that was the problem with mine.
It only sucks power bad and doesn't come on at all when I turn it on.
Hope you figure it out.
I am subscriber good humor and speaks Spanglish
I speak hillbilly.
@@hillbillyrv 👍
Hi we got a 2014 palomino camper with a low profile dometic ac our fan did nothing and ac just hummed no fan shut off promptly so we took cover off if I spin fan by hand then turn on ac it blows cold and works but then shut off after about a half hour give or take should I replace fan capacitor any idea why it would die after about a half hour thx much for any tips love your vids
The fan quits or the whole AC quits after 1/2 hour?
@@hillbillyrv it all stops after about a half hour of running then will work again after a cool down period if u help the fan manually
Humming compressors on fans bound up reach up therecspin fan. May need new fan or capacitors.
Yes
Crud, Mine is brand new and it hums. Not sure what to do???
Seen brand new ones with something stuck in the fan.
Fan turns with help and runs intermittently but doesn't get cold and compressor is hot to the touch
Any suggestions would be appreciated
Watch more of my AC videos to find out how to check the amp draw on the compressor, but it kinda sounds smoked.
Turn AC on and all it does is make a clicking sound like it’s trying to turn on. Fan don’t turn on or anything. Turn it off and on and same thing. Then it kicked the breaker. Flipped breaker and turned back on for about 4 hours. Then breaker kicked again. Bought new breaker and started working again. Only worked for a few hours and then the new breaker kicked. Flipped breaker and turned ac on and it started making a clicking sound again and ac won’t come on. Camper is a 2019 cyclone with a 15,000 btu dometic system. Any ideas on how to fix yourself without having to call a repair man?
Hard to say. Sounds like something is pulling too many amps.
I bought a camper RV we got power to it an tried to turn ac on but nothing not a thing happen . I was wondering if you might know what the problem could be?
Maybe 12 volt power, maybe 120 volt AC power, maybe AC is bad, maybe in the control system. Hard to say.
I just recently got a enclosed race car trailer. And the roof mount ac worked fine last week. Turned it on today and all that will come on is the compressor the fan won’t try to come on at all. It’s been sitting 5 or so years and hasn’t been ran. Gonna try the fan spinning trick if that don’t work is there anything else I can look at.
You can make sure the fan is getting power.
@@hillbillyrv I messed with it today and the fan trick worked but every time I turned it off and the fan stopped spinning had to start the fan by hand again.
@@landonmauldin42 You probably have a bad start capacitor. I have at least one video showing how to change those.
Mines doing this but I’ve put 2 capacitors in it now, in the past month. It works great sometimes then sometimes it just Hums. Why does it work good sometimes then not others?
Sounds like a bad motor. @@timothywells457
Mine is starting to do this, could it just be the fan motor?
Yep or a start capacitor.
Mine runs fine for a little bit then drops out and just humms. Already put 2 caps in it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Compressor works perfect. What the heck is going on?
It's hard to say.
How did to bird get in there anyway? Thanks Don
Had to be a pretty small bird with a really large nest. Maybe it was building condos.
My RV AC will not run after I have replaced everything !!!! All electrical parts and even thermostat! Still will not run. Why ????? 😂😂😂😂😂
All of the electrical parts tested bad? That’s weird.
@@hillbillyrv no. All the electrical parts are new.
Nice bird condo how they get in Kenny
Not sure. Must have been little birds.
@@hillbillyrv they sure make a mess of things like you said I would have guessed bee 🐝 nest as well or a stuck motor
@@coreymerritt7742 sure did
Can dog hair do the same thing to the motor?
I guess enough could.
Its a miracle! I opened up the inside and my fan motor wouldn't move so I did what you said and kept turning it until it loosened up and it worked! You are a lifesaver mr. Hillbilly rv!!!! Awesome 😇
YAY !!!!@@vagabondnomad1373
How did a bird get in there to build a nest?
Must have been a small bird. I really don’t know.
My AC works in high, but hums on low. Do you know why?
The low winding is bad in the motor?
@@hillbillyrv It won’t come on if in low mode. Just hums. When I change to high, it works fine
