  • Saint Ana Lake (Szent Anna-tó in Hungarian) is the only volcanic lake in Romania. It is located in the Ciomatu massif in Harghita county, on the left side of the Olt river, near the Tușnad resort. The lake is located at the bottom of the crater of an extinct volcano, called Ciomatu Mare (Nagy-Csomád in Hungarian), from the Puciosu volcanic massif, the site of the most recent volcanic eruption in the Carpathians and Eastern Europe, which occurred several tens of thousands of years ago. years (probably more recent than 42,000 years ago).
Saint Ana Lake is at an altitude of 946 m. Almost circular in shape, similar to a painter's palette, it has a length of 620 m and a maximum width of 460 m, an area of 19.50 ha and a maximum depth of 7 m. The lake replenishes its waters only from precipitation, having no springs. The purity of the water approaches that of distilled water, with only 0.0029 ml of minerals. The reduced trophic capacity of the lake water is also due to mophetic emanations through the bottom of the lake and through the crater walls.
Tourists who come to Lake Saint Ana do not need meteorologists' forecasts to find out what the weather will be like, they have at hand an empirical but accurate method offered by the volcanic mountain: the two fissures formed in the mountain that foretell the weather. The locals know that "If the emanations from the fissures sizzle, then it's a sign of a storm, and if not, the day will be sunny, just right for hiking." The phenomenon has a scientific explanation. There is still post-volcanic activity in the mountain, sensitive to any change in atmospheric pressure. When atmospheric pressure drops, gases such as carbon dioxide and sulfur rise to the surface and flood the cracks with a pungent smell, a sign that rain is coming.
Lake Sfânta Ana is a complex natural, geological, floristic and faunal reserve, being connected to Băile Tușnad by tourist trails.
Near the lake there is a Roman Catholic chapel dedicated to Saint Ana.
