I run a TGH 30% OD trans in a SCX10ii Definitely a game changer with 30%. Might have to try it in the Capra! I work as a CNC programmer for a small bicycle component manufacturer. It’s fun and challenging. We have 6 mills and 3 turning centers.
Ive got a capra,used..but came with brass hubs..I added brass centers,..im in San Diego ca..,have good crawl spots, kinda what you have..ive put overdrive in all 4corners of my 10.3! & loving it!! But Capra is my newbe..still learning!! Love your show
Oh and, I’m a machinist that runs (and programs haha) mainly Okuma Mills (3 and 5 axis) and Millturn machines. We do mainly prototypes or small series.
*TANGERINES* I believe is the correct word in the secret word competition to win this rig with the overdrive woohoo HAHA I love overdrive, my SCX10 doesn't have as much overdrive as that but its surprising what a difference it makes.
Okay, gears are awesome, but if you are running this on the stock Dynamite DYNS1216 540 35T you will probably burn it up in under an hour. I put these gears in a stock Capra and the smoke came very shortly after do just a couple mild lines. I have a HH Torquemaster 540 35T coming to replace it and hopefully it can standup to the demand of these new TGH Wild 20/15 gears. Thanks for the great video!
The only mod on my Capra is the larger dig servo. I modeled and printed the mount, then uploaded the file to Thingiverse. Works better than that little one, and the mount doesn't flex nearly as bad.
The "electronics man" is using an L-wrench. Get a 1.5mm driver if you don't have one! LOL I ordered myself a set of these gears tonight. Anxious to try them.
John I love the paint scheme! what tire are you using? as a crawling expert do you have any advice for foams? that is a great addition! I put overdrive gear in MY TRX-4 and was blown away at the difference. it's my new favorite mod, right behind adding a HH Motor.
I tried the mild 25% in my new 4ws. It made you a motor sale because the stock motors white ghost escaped in one battery. I probably should have gone down to a 11t pinion as soon as I noticed it didn't have enough torque to start my climbs on 90* rock faces. I went with the cheap crawlmaster sport 15t 550. I have 3 pinions now 9,10, and 11 to try when your motor arrives. What do you feel will work best? Yes need a Vader belly skid plate for the 550.Great video as always John
Hi I got a Traxxas rock crawler seems to have a lot more suspension than these new ones additive better twist motor any better drive servo and it seems to be a better than most of them out there
Nice review and demonstration. I'm assuming if it's still going to see a fair bit of use as a trail truck/mixed use (kids) you would want to stay stock or a lower OD ratio? Currently am stock with wheel weights only (brass hubs) and it does pretty well all around. Thx.
I wonder if someone will be able to release an underdrive kit rather that an overdrive to put in the rear. That way you get some more reduction. That’s the way I liked to run my Ax10 and ar60 build.
I do quite a lot of trailing and take time to crawl over obstacles as and when I find them - does the overdrive cause any issues with the drive train when covering decent distances? I could be covering 3ish miles each time I'm out...
Yeah, I'm one of the 4 who don't have a Capra.... I'd love one, but can't dream of affording one. 😞 If I could, from what I've heard, they're geared a bit High.... I'd rather have Underdrive for the Rear Axle. Merry Christmas John! 🎄🎅 Carmine ✈🚂🚙
I need a clarification. Do the portal overdrive gears alone represent a 30% ratio change, or is that when combine with a ring and pinion change? I started life as a machinist apprentice but that was a long time ago, I'm retired now. I have done rc car racing and rc airplanes. FedEx is bringing my first rock crawler tomorrow (Capra) I am very excited about the Capra!
Having such a hard time not saying "toys", eh? LOL. It's ok...you know what they say. "The only thing that separates the men, from the boys, is the price of their toys." So, go ahead...it's not a 'bad' word. As for Capra mods, I'm finishing up a shock relocation mod, which simultaneously lowers the shocks, and moves the front forward, and the rear back. I know this sounds "crazy"...but, it's not as crazy as you might be thinking. I installed some custom-bent SS links (the 'Husky Link' links from Club 5 Racing), which are longer than stock, thus lengthening the wheelbase (from 318mm, to 324mm). As most are aware, the stock shocks (in the stock position) are way too long...many have installed internal limiters and/or switched to 90mm shocks. In addition, the longer wheelbase changes the mounted angle of the shocks. So, in order to return (for the most part) the shock's mounted position to (as close to as possible) the original mounted angle, I devised an "alternate" mounting method. I started with a BPC Wraith Shock Relocation & Lowering Kit. Using my trusty Dremel, and a metal cutting disc, I removed 1 of the 3 'frame mounting' positions from each. Then, on the shock mounting side, from the pieces having 4 shock positions, I removed the last one...and, on the pieces having 3 shock positions (1 on one end, & 2 on the other end), I removed the "single mount" end. After a quick 'test fit' (in the Capra's frame-chassis, I'll be using the front & rear holes to attach the "shock relocation" pieces), I used the Dremel's grinding attachment, to "smooth out" the SS pieces. Finally, I have each piece a few location coats of primer, followed by a few coats of semigloss (since I didn't have flat) black Rust-Oleum. Using the stock shocks, they're still too long (even with 2.75mm of internal limiters), which is why I've ordered some 90mm shocks (I was planning on them anyway). They'll be delivered tomorrow, along with the M3 Nylock nuts I'll need to attach the shocks to the shock relocation pieces. Not a bad mod, eh? Especially from someone who's Capra is their first crawler. 😀
@@humboldtef While what you state may, or may not, be true (ie. saying the word "toy")...which, in all honesty, I don't think it's true in this particular case...the highest probability is that this was nothing more than John's sense of humor. If you've watched any of his videos, you should understand that he has a VERY "unique" sense of humor.
Considering that the Capra seems to be overgeared in stock form, why doesn't someone come up with underdrive gears for the rear portals...Just a thought...
@@kevanray Yep. I see your point with the stock axles. But, I am looking towards redesigned replacement axles as the solution. We know that Vanquish and Super Shafty are working on Capra axles.
30% is close enough to what I always seen as perfect over or underdrive(I always prefer underdriving to keep any torque-twist from peeking-out it's ugly head). Happy-medium is the front going a quarter turn fast than the rear per tire revolution....that would be 25%. 30 is close enough. With the Sendaro's 12%... I still see alot of front "tire push".
Hey Tom, how goes it! I always thought this idea of underdrive vs overdrive being different was a bit of a fallacy. Either way it boils down to having the same difference in speed front and back (not considering base speed). Now if you gear down an overdriven truck to match.... wait a minute I've got this all wrong torque twist is entirely based on the amount of gear reduction. ha ha trying to put that into words made me realize that I was just flat out wrong. Hope you enjoy the Holiday Tom!

Short answer; NO I would, however, like to know how to permanently defeat that accursed DIG feature on my RTR Capra without ripping it and its gearbox apart to do so. It's the most unneeded, problematic feature since RC differential lockouts and 2-speed transmissions. Absolute bullocks that should have been saved for the 'Kit' builders and competition minded. It's the last Gd thing I or the rest of the RTR demographic needed.
@@HolmesHobbies I found a cure for the incessant accidental DIG activations that can only be deactivated by unplugging the battery and rebooting my Capra. Hey what are those wheels and tires combo?
What overall gear ratio would be ideal in a capra for a super slow crawl on 2.2 tires? Any suggestions on getting a low gear ratio? Trans type?
Throw out the stock tranny and skid and get a 3 gear conversion.

not enough room for underdrive. pinion is already super tiny and not enough room to reduce the upper portal gear size.

What are the overdrive tooth counts?

Do you know if it's possible to run a smaller pinion? Stick is 14T. I heard you can't change the spur gear because there is an idler gear.
Is changing the portal gears better than the diff gears?
less stress on the internal half shafts and diffs by changing portal gears. more stress on them changing the diff ratio.
Would a crawl master sport 540 20t have too little wheel speed for a Capra?
