- The Hugh Tracey Alto, the Hugh Tracey Bb Treble, and the Hugh Tracey D Treble kalimbas can each be retuned by up to a whole step higher or lower than their "native key", hence covering all 12 keys in western music.

There are two ways to change keys on a kalimba. One (easy to change keys, but it changes the instrument's layout) is to go around the circle of 5ths - ie, G and C differ only by one note, F# goes to F natural - easy to retune, but then every song you knew on the G kalimba is played differently on the C.
The other way, THIS WAY, mainly moves all the tines up or down, so you can play the same song on any of them. -- JUST like moving your capo up or down your guitar neck.

AT - that is the point - you can play the exact same song in different keys, it will sound the same.. but higher or lower.

I have corresponded with you a little bit about my not-so-vintage Treble Hugh Tracey I got on Ebay. Well, I decided to retune it to C major as I just couldn't find songs to play in the B root key. Then for some reason the third from the top right was completely dead. No matter what I did it would not fix. The only time it vibrated was if it was back in the Treble tuning. Then I decided to replace the tine with a tine from a Kalimba I upgraded keys on. That made no difference. I pulled ALL the original keys out and the top half-round piece fell off along with the bottom wood bar the tines rest on. I had an aha moment. Maybe what made it a treble was that bar was farther away from the upper brace the tines set through. I had a new bottom piece along with the metal rod. I pushed that setup further up the Kalimba to give the tines extra length so they could vibrate in the C scale. It worked! Now, however, I'm not digging the sound. It just sounds really, really basic. I've gotten used to the more sweeter tones of a flat board Kalimba. I'm actually wondering if it's a gender thing. My husband prefers the hollow box and women tend to prefer the sweet tones of flatbords. Anyways, I thought you'd get a kick out of hearing about my Kalimba experiment. 😊
When a note just goes thud, it is a problem with the structure of the box. Certain frequencies get absorbed, so it doesn’t matter if you put a new tine or not. And then, as you found you can retune the tine, higher or lower than the thud frequency, and it will ring clear. Try this. Place your thumb on the face wood and press down… and try playing the note in question. Move your thumb around to different locations… does this improve?
An alternative solution…. If the highest good sounding note of the kalimba is.. D… then retune the entire instrument to the key of Bb… everything is a while step lower. You will be in a different key, but all the Tablature and instruction will work for you.

@@kalimbamagic hello. Yes, I was thinking it could have to do with the sound box. There is a small spot on the same side as that key/tine where the pieces of wood meet where it looks like there was a crack or some other compromise to it, and reglued.

I found a Hugh Tracy Alto in a thrift shop for eight dollars. I've tried others but I like it best.

The Alto (or Treble) kalimba comes in G, and can be tuned down to F by pulling all the tines down (out) a little bit. Kalimba Magic will do that service for you - usually for free - when you buy a kalimba from us.

Hi, what i do really thing it would be fantastic is providing a chromatic kalimba (or half chromatic)...i wonder why it hasn't been offered out yet...There are so many nice melodys that need some extra notes!!. IT IS REALLY A NEED
I think the way the notes are arreanged allows more sympathetic resonance between the tines. Example if I play a C the E and G keys (Next to the C) vibrate a bit as well giving a fuller sound. If there were keys in between then it might not sound as good. i just got cheap kalimba 10 key from china, found it very hard to tune with universal tuner on android apps,. using the modern baroque pitch which its almost close to it

Help I got a kalimba and it was wonderful but my dad found it re tuned it and I know it was a alto but it dosent sound the same even though I've tuned it back to what that scale it said in the box but again dosent sound like when I got it

Bass note: he means the Minor key
No. Root note is the tonic (the first note) of scale. C is the root of the C major or C minor scales. G is the root of the G major and G minor scales. Bass note is the lowest note on the kalimba.
Let's say you have a kalimba tuned to C and its bass note is also C (a regular 17-key kalimba). But you saw a song in G. What do you do? You tune your Fs higher and make them F#. Now, you have a kalimba with the bass note C but the root of the scale is G.

Alto kalimbas have 15 tines, with a low note of G below middle C, exactly 2 octaves in the key of G. The Treble Kalimba has 17 tines... and its standard tuning is very different - still in the key of G, the low note is B below middle C, and then up 2 octaves and a bit to D above high C for the top note. The 17 Note treble Kalimbas in this video have been recast into the canonical "alto form" with the root note in the low tine.
What about the Hugh Tracey chromatic kalimba ? It can be covered every keys right ? Since it has pentatonic at the back of the box

You can... but remember that one tuned to G major will also play E minor. One that plays in C major will also play in A minor.

I got mine on Amazon.com for less than $50. The 17-note model in Mahogany.
I wanted to get into playing this instrument but i didn't for this reason, who wants all of those laying around, i just want one that i can play any song on, well let me see, i can't play this song on this one so i have to use that one, no wait a minute, i mean this one LOL, great video but no thanks. 👍✌.
Conger Scott I went my first 20 years with just 2 Kalimbas, but when I started playing professionally I realized I needed a few more keys. This video just shows you that, whatever key you want, we can accommodate.

Roma Taliona ASMR You can already learn songs in any key, by transposing the song into the key of your Kalimba. That is, any diatonic song can be played in the key of G. The point of this video: you may need to transpose a song into some particular key, either to match the key that is best for your voice, or to match the key that other instruments are playing in.
Guitarists use the capo. Keyboardist can transpose the keys played. Transposing is very important if you are playing with others. One time I had to transpose my keyboard is to match the vocalist

You can buy over-the-thumb, under-the-nail piks (yes, spelled that way) on eBay or from the guys here at Kalimba Magic. Solves the problem.
