    Good video. I like your uncapping tank, wish I had room for one in my extraction room. Yah, my guess was off again as a lot of your subs because we were all hoping you would have a better year. Hey Russell. That tank definitely sped things up and made them easier. I think I had a few supers that were less full that swayed the weight. Losing those three would have put me a lot closer for sure. I’m super happy with what I got though, considering the rough start.

    As always, another entertaining video. I like your equipment setup sequence. I’ll be using my 2 items from HillCo. A motorized extractor and uncapping tank.
    Curious as to how much honey you wound up with from your uncapping tank drippings…. AND how far away from your hives do you set your empty frames for clean up by the bees?
    Thanks for your efforts in documenting your extracting process as we will be setting up in our honeybarn kitchen area as well.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  Рік тому

      Hi Tommy. I probably got close to 5 gallons from the uncapping tank. I finished off that last bucket with it and filled another about 1/3 and I had one large pull off of it mid way thru. I put my empty boxes around the back side if my barn. I’d guess it’s about 400’ from the hives.

  • @rtxhoneybees
    @rtxhoneybees Рік тому +1

    Good stuff Darren. God Bless you for entering all those guesses. That's a lot of time to do that. If you can mount casters on that cappings tank, you could roll it out into the heat of your barn and probably get another 10lbs off of those cappings. You mentioned you let the bees clean the frames. A year or two ago, you stored them wet. I don't think I heard you say how that went. I tried putting them over an inner cover this year. Happier with that than the free for all that resulted in ragged comb and wax bits everywhere.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  Рік тому

      Hi RTX. Yeah I keep that apartment at 86 deg, but the barn does get hotter. I bought some casters for that thing, but didn’t have time to get them installed. That might be a winter project. His new ones came with casters. lol. Yeah I decided to set them out this year. Only for two days and then I stored them after dark on the second evening. A little bit of mess, putting an inner cover underneath is a good idea.

    This has noting to do with beekeeping but I really love the wildlife clips that you usually have at the beginning of your videos. Now about beekeeping, next year, put a few supers on with 8 frames of drawn comb and see how you like it. They obviously have to be drawn comb and equally spaced. I think you will enjoy uncapping much more. Also, A trick that I have had success with is when loading my extractor, I place successive frames on opposite sides, inside the extractor. Of course, with 9 frames as you have it would work better to go, 1,4,7 (2,5,8; 3,6,9). It works for me because the bees seem to fill the frames from the center out so successive frames are of similar weight. Also, I place my catch bucket (out of the extractor) in a fairly large plastic tub. That makes recovering from “over filling” a bucket much more pleasant!

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  Рік тому

      Hi Bob. I slowed in the wildlife intros a bit as these last couple of videos were on the long side. I’ll get them back going again. Wildlife has slowed a bit these hot months, except for coins and no one wants to watch trash bandits. lol. Thanks for those tips, a secondary containment is a good idea. • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes, it does just fine. I use a hot knife to uncap, so I don’t have a lot of wax particles. If you use a scratcher or other mechanical methods that makes a lot of wax particles, it will clog that top screen up pretty fast.

    Looks good! I like your process. I think if you were on the other side of the uncapping tank since you are right handed the cappings would drop right in without having to knock them off the brace. I tend to tip the top of the frame over where they drop so when I cut them off they drop right in. I put the bar with the pin off to one side instead of in the middle as well to allow more frames to be queued up. I have watched for along time and I was surprised we had a bigger harvest than you, but every year is different and you still had a good harvest! Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Brian, I thought about putting it down closer to the end, but the holes down there are only on the top and don’t go thru. I could drill them out pretty easy. Not sure why they are that way. Nice honey harvest setup you have got yourself this year. Just wondering what you do with all your cappings? I appreciate that you let the bees clean out the wet frames, and some people also allow the bees to clean up the cappings too, and I even believe that you can get a special insert for the extractor and this way extract the honey from the cappings. In the end I suppose it all depends on how many hives/frames/cappings you have and whether or not you can justify the additional cost of extra equipment etc.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  Рік тому +1

      Thanks JF. I melt down my cappings and filter the wax. Make a few candles. Most of it goes back on frame foundation. I don’t let the bees get into the cappings. It puts too much junk in them to filter out. The little bit of honey that doesn’t make it out of the cappings isn’t worth trying to get out. The honey goes out into the water when I melt the cappings and I put that honey water out and the bees collect it. Thanks for watching.

    Also really appreciate the honest update on the HillCo uncapping tank. Frankly, I purchased four wooden telescoping covers that were so snug I couldn’t remove them from the box’s, plus they were 3” vs 2” on others on the market which made using the upper entrance and handle’s difficult and due to being too deep.
