    Lol. I had to laugh Carissa! You were talking about the colours of the men’s’ shirts and the colour of the nets. That is the artist in you! I draw and paint also. I find we tend to notice some things that other people would not. One of my sons once told me that he liked the way I looked at things! He said I am able to see beauty in everything! That really surprised me that he would notice that. He was a lot younger at that point. I thanked him because I felt it was a true compliment! Sometimes people will look at things and see ugly or a mess. But if you look carefully can can find some form of beauty or wonder in anything! We live in an amazing world! Wow, that was off the beaten path…wasn’t it lol.

      I like the way you left the tree that had to come down because you can see the history of it while it grows ❤ will rain in the rotten part damage new growth?
      The way you take the olives from the branch looks similar to milking !
      How long do you have to give between applying for a fire permit and receiving it? Are they often turned down?

    Hi from Cyprus! We use special combs on long sticks that help to get olives off the branches. Also we like to pick them when they are fat and green as the acid is lower in the oil. The greener olive is the less oil get but lower acid and higher quality. Black olives are also tasty as oil but higher in acid and get more oil in comparison to green olives. Other than that, theres no other satisfaction than consuming your own olives wether meaty black or green olives, enjoy! Also olive wood is ideal for warming in winter as they burn slowly. So u can save the thicker parts 🙏🙏🙏💖

    If you don’t use all of your pruned branches for fire wood - and if you have the ability - you can BURY them, it creates IMMENSELY fertile soil, also making swales on you land harvest some of the rain from the rainy season and let’s it soak into YOUR land instead of just running off

    We live in Southwest Turkey and have 30 olive trees that we planted ten years ago. Just picked and took to local mill for cold pressing. Very low harvest this year, due to not enough rain and a very hot summer, so bad that Turkey has banned exports. We had less than a third of last year’s harvest, but still got 9 kilos of organic cold pressed oil, for which I am so grateful! Happy picking and pressing!

    You may already know about these but just in case, as sometimes they can make life easier…and gentler on the hands! There are these small hand held fork claw like rake things you can get that you can rake the olives off the beaches. Quicker and less tough on the hands!
    Weren’t the olives beautifully plump this year! We noticed our olive oil this year was far more suave but still so aromatic.. some locals say it’s the best year for olive oil in a while so hope you guys get the same result although who am I kidding..self picked olive oil will always be delicious!!

    • @nickytanton107

    • @FrankieOffGrid
      @FrankieOffGrid  Рік тому +5

      Thank you ☺️ we do have a few rakes which we use when our hands get tired. But we quite enjoy hand picking, the oil makes your hands soft 😆 ah that’s interesting that you’re having a good harvest, our first one in 2021 was incredibly abundant and this year seems a little less so, but we still have a lot more picking to do so we shall see if we get as good a crop. Ooh yes always delicious, thanks for watching ☺️🫒

    I have read that because of the drought in Spain, the price of olive oil here in the US is very high, yet Portugal seems to have had a lot of rain and you said it is considered the best. I don't think I've ever seen Portuguese olive oil where I shop. I generally look for Spanish olive oil, but lately am buying Italian oil. It's okay unless you pay top dollar for a bottle. I've paid as much as $45 for a bottle of Italian oil 10 years ago. It was so good you could drink it from the bottom. Your oil looks quite lovely. Jane, Philadelphia

Oh, it’s an old old technique and in Spain right now, they’re doing a thing where they’re on growing food in some of the older cities where they can cross the sails during this canvas sails that I’m talking about with water dripping on them an irrigation system and growing food on them actually growing vegetables and things very interesting. I m happy you are getting interested in bringing the olive cutoffs back to the natural cycle, instead of burning them. I follow this path now for two years and could share some knowledge and experiences on this topic with you by email, or Telegram

      Thanks that would be great :) we tried chipping some the other day but our wood chipper wasn’t very happy. If we do burn some then we use the ash in the garden aswell. Our email is: Frankiesausagedog@gmail.com

      The classic way 😉 when you feed the fire quickly and extinguish it before the char turn to ashes, you can also get some great biochar out of that beside the ashes. Siver it out, crush it to 🥜 size and put it in a compost tee for some weeks, and it'll be great addition for your veggie garden, where it serves as a long term home for bacteria.

    I just take it for granted these days that every expat in Portugal has a UA-cam channel lol 😂, it’s like stand in Olive grove and throw a olive 🫒 in air in any direction and your hit an expat UA-camr on head 😉.

      I guess they would have to climb up the tree to shake the branches, I picked grapefruits on a kibbutz no shaking was involved lol

    Having the branches freshly cut makes it easier for the wood chipper actually.

      Our chipper just gets clogged up with the leaves after about 10 minutes.

    Unfortunately, if olive trees are pruned too heavily, they will produce shoots at the bottom of the trunk.
    Less is often more.😉

    • @FrankieOffGrid
      @FrankieOffGrid  Рік тому +3

      They produce the shooters every year no matter what you do.. you just prune them too. We’re very fortunate that we can basically follow what the other olive farmers in the area do and ask for advice if we need it.

    When are you going to harvest your quince and what are you going to do with them?

    I don't know if it is you or me. Several times the frame froze but the timer kept running. Eventually the video moved on. One example was as the end when you started to talk about a press in the north. And then wouldn't accept this comment! Seems to be sorted now. Anyway, many thanks. Always enjoy your offerings!!

    Next time you're at the press, please ask what they do with the water left over from the press. Just curious. Thank you. If it has some good qualities you might use it for watering the plants. LOVE the crazy hat! Was the bread as delicious as it looks?
