  • In a Zoom meeting with Sri Ramana Center, Houston, on 18th June 2022 Michael James discusses verse 3 of Uḷḷadu Nāṟpadu:
    happinessofbeing.blogspot.com...
    ulahumeypoyt tōṯṟa mulahaṟivā maṉḏṟeṉ
    ḏṟulahusukha maṉḏṟeṉ ḏṟuraitte - ṉulahuviṭṭut
    taṉṉaiyōrn doṉḏṟiraṇḍu tāṉaṯṟu nāṉaṯṟa
    vannilaiyel lārkkumop pām.
Padacchēdam (word-separation): ‘ulahu mey’, ‘poy tōṯṟam’, ‘ulahu aṟivu ām’, ‘aṉḏṟu’ eṉḏṟu, ‘ulahu sukham’, ‘aṉḏṟu’ eṉḏṟu uraittu eṉ? ulahu viṭṭu, taṉṉai ōrndu, oṉḏṟu iraṇḍu tāṉ aṯṟu, ‘nāṉ’ aṯṟa a-n-nilai ellārkkum oppu ām.
English translation: What is the use of disputing: ‘The world is real’, ‘An unreal appearance’; ‘The world is sentient’, ‘It is not’; ‘The world is happiness’, ‘It is not’? Leaving the world and investigating oneself, one and two ceasing, that state in which ‘I’ has perished is agreeable to all.
Explanatory paraphrase: What is the use of disputing: ‘The world is real’, ‘[No, it is] an unreal appearance’; ‘The world is sentient’, ‘It is not’; ‘The world is happiness’, ‘It is not’? Leaving [all thought about] the world and investigating [or knowing] oneself, [thereby] putting an end to [all disputes about] one and two [non-duality and duality], that state in which ‘I’ [ego] has [thereby] perished is agreeable to all.
While discussing the meaning and implications of this verse and answering questions about it Michael also discusses various other passages from Bhagavan’s writings, including:

33:29 …likewise when we turn within and see ourself as we actually are we will see there's nothing other than ourselves. So everything that exists … so - just like all the ornaments are composed of gold - this whole world is composed of nothing other than god who is our own real nature. But in order to see god as he actually is we first need to see him in our heart.
Kumar Saran …there is a question from Sandy:
So what about the sat-sang going on right now: is it real or not ? I'm asking this question not to argue but to understand better.
    Michael:
No, it's all unreal. The only thing that is real is you, not you as Sandy but you as 'I am'. That is that fundamental awareness of our own existence: our existence is real - our identity is false.
So our existence is 'I am', our identity as 'I am Sandy' or 'I am Michael' or 'I am Kumar', 'I am whoever' - that is false.
What is real is only 'I am'.
So this so-called 'sat-sang' is existing in whose view ? Only in the view of that I that is aware of itself as 'I am Sandy'.
So since Sandy is unreal and the I that is aware of itself as Sandy is unreal, everything experienced by that Sandy is unreal except for one thing: 'I am'. That alone is real.
All of Bhagavan's teachings are unreal. If Bhagavan's teachings were real they would be false because he tells us: everything is unreal, everything except 'I am' is unreal. So that must include his teachings. So if his teachings are true they are unreal, if they are real they are false.
So the teaching is: we cannot find the reality in anything other than ourselves: That's why Bhagavan said in paragraph 16 of Nan Ar? ...: we need to investigate and know ourself. We cannot investigate and know ourself in books. That includes Bhagavan's own teachings 'Ulladu Narpadu', 'Upadesa Undiyar', 'Arunachala Stuti Panchakam', …we cannot find ourselves in these things. Why then are these texts useful ?
Because they are pointing out to us where we can see what is real. We can see what is real only within ourselves.
So all of Bhagavan's teachings are useful because they're pointing our attention back at ourselves. That is, the central aim of all the Bhagavan's teachings is to turn our attention away from everything else back towards ourselves. So his teachings are true in the sense that they are pointing us in the right direction. They are unreal in the sense that nothing other than 'I am' is real.
When we see ourselves as we actually are then we will see:
this whole world including his teachings is nothing other than ourselves. So ultimately everything is real, but it's only real as 'I am', not real as all the separate phenomena that we see in this world among which his teachings are included. But whereas all other phenomena are drawing our mind outwards his teachings are telling us: turn within - look within, see yourself.
You referred to this our gathering, our discussion as a 'sat- sanga'. It is a 'sat-sanga' only in a very loose sense of the term.
'Sat' means what is real, what actually exists. So what is true 'sat-sanga' is only being as we actually are, being ourself alone
is 'sat-sanga', turning our attention within and holding on to our own being. That is the alone true 'sat-sanga' because our minds are coming outwards. And because Bhagavan's teachings are directing us to turn our attention back within, associating with his teachings is also an indirect form of 'sat-sanga' because his teachings are directing our attention back towards 'sat'. What is 'sat' ?
Only 'I am' - nothing but 'I am' is 'sat'.
