Can't tell if they are using an exacto knife or not but either way it's really sharp and precise and the actual mat that the gems go on are pretty thick in comparison to the plastic covering on top. So light pressure is just enough to only cut the top layer without cutting underneath! Absolutely test it yourself though to find how much pressure you need to cut the plastic without going too far down 😊
