I wish I'd watched this about 6 weeks ago. The technique for picking up floats is fantastic. I've just finished a Fair Isle cardigan and all the other videos and instructions just seem to say lay the yarn to be caught in across the other yarn before making the stitch which is impossible to do without letting go of the left hand yarn and leads to the two yarns being twisted. I'm now on to a Nordic style jumper and this technique makes it so much easier. Thank you.
Thanks so much for showing me I can still knit fair isle holding the pins underneath as all the examples I’ve seen show people holding the pins on top and I’ve not knitted that way since I was a child 👏👍
I enjoy watching your tutorials. You are so informative and slow so I can learn. I’m a beginner knitter and I can follow your lead. Keep the tutorials coming . 🦋
You are right sounds complicated but once I got the hang of it (took many rewatches and knitting attempts) I mastered this very useful skill of catching the float as I Fair Isle Knit. 😊 This is my first attempt at it and I used only this video to learn. The second technique of catching the float worked best for my knitting style. I look forward to seeing what your other videos can teach me. I am finally working on this Fair Isle Knitting pattern that I've had for 8 years and spent $100 on high quality Nordic wool. Blessings ♥️
Thank you for this very helpful and encouraging video. I am trying Fair Isle for the first time! I am taking it very slowly and chose a simple seeding pattern so I don’t have to worry about following a chart too much as you recommend. I'm really getting into the swing of it now!
I’m going to conquer this, Hannah! I made the other baby hats, but this one eluded me twice. Lol. Since doing the cowl knit along, I’m to do this! Thank you for your clear and concise videos.
Wow! This is by far the best way to handle floats. Thank you, Hannah! I have just recently found your channel and it has made my life so much easier and pleasant!😀❤
@knitwithhannah excellent video. Thank you. Only 1 question and apologies if blindingly obvious! How do you know how often to pick up the yarn. Lets say you have 5 primary yarn stitches, when would you want to pick up the second yarn to keep tied into back? Please 😊
It’s generally once you get over three stitches between the secondary coloured stitches. At that point you’ll want to catch it so the floats of yarn don’t get too long. Happy knitting 🧶
What a fantastic tutorial 🙂 I have been struggling to manage my threads, but I'm very excited to start another hat using some of these techniques. Thank you for the education and inspiration.
Hello again Hannah. I have looked at this valuable teaching a few times. I notice that at some points there are, I think it is, four stitches knitted before catching the second thread. Now I am knitting a baby blanket and am concerned their little digits might get caught. How could I go about creating shorter parts between catching stitches without it becoming a mess? Many thanks!
Yes, there is always the option to catch the yarn every two stitches if you like, to make sure the ‘floats’ aren’t hanging to loose. That’s especially helpful if you’re using thicker yarn. Happy knitting 🧶
@KnitWithHannah Thank you very much Hannah! I am practicing again tonight - hopefully tomorrow I will be brave enough to incorporate fair isle into this baby blanket.
What yarn are you using and size needle are you using and I heard if you want to do the fair isle work only on the bottom r the sweater how do you keep the tension and sizing correct
Hi Natalie, full details of what I’m knitting is here: knitwithhannah.co.uk/product/baby-hat-trio With practice, the tension will be even through the whole piece, and sizing will be just as you wanted as you selected when starting to knit. Happy knitting 🧶
I’m not sure, it’s a while since I filmed this. It will likely be in the second half if it’s there. We did it in the knit-along during the summer if you’d like to see it in finer detail: academy.knitwithhannah.co.uk/sg-baby-hats-trio Happy knitting 🧶
hello .I'm from the northwest of the UK..I've been knitting for a year...I'd really love to be able to knit a fair Isle round neck yoke jumper..I struggle with processing written instructions.( pattern)so I find watching videos more helpful..most I've seen are complicated.I know there's lots of increases.and I'm just plain confused.i much prefer English way of knitting.i find with the continental way.my tension becomes too tight..I like to tackle things that scare me knitting wise..and it's a massive hurdle I'd like to jump..inc increases and decreased.many thanks
Whenever you come across an abbreviation you don’t quite get, look for it with my name ‘Knit with Hannah’ in the search bar and if the video is there, you’ll find it. I started the channel as there were so few, if any English style knitters doing tutorials when I was looking for them, so I’ve tried to plug the gaps. And a couple of the recent videos might help, Reading your knitting: ua-cam.com/video/-iqcjar-VyM/v-deo.htmlsi=uPTaIHYKtc-O5S4D Abbreviations: ua-cam.com/video/yU82Bkt1elA/v-deo.htmlsi=kPHQZwzpJ2rjaigB They’re talking about how to knit with some overhead video too, just covering some extra stuff that’s not in a how-to video. As someone who's struggled with knitting in the las few months, I will be returning to larger needles and yarn, so they're easier to handle. In the past I've also dabble with a bit of weaving when knitting hasn't been possible, it's still letting me play with yarn, but uses different finger movements.
No competition here, Raquel - it felt impossible to me when I started knitting with 2 colours. If it's something you'd like to start, , it's same as everything else; one stitch at a time. Happy knitting 🧶
Hi Hannah, hope you are well. I have a question. I have a section of knitting where for eg, I would knit 4 stitches in blue then 4 stitches in white. I know how to catch the white yarn, but my brain cells cannot work out how to catch the yarn that is held in my right hand (so in your eg the blue yarn) when I am knitting four stitches with yarn held in my left hand. This is really confusing me, and honestly, frustrating me. I don't croquet so I struggle to hold the yarn correctly. You also said we need to be careful to maintain the same method of knitting to avoid the stitches laying differently, which has potential in the blanket I am knitting. Could you help please 😭😭 Thank you!!!
Hi, I’d suggest you pick up some spare yarn and have a practice with that. When you’re carrying the right hand yarn it needs to go over the needle before you make a stitch - then return to where it was - after you throw/pick the left hand yarn, but before you pull the loop through to make the next stitch. Once you’ve got your head round it, it will work, it’s just a longer and more complex row. Happy knitting 🧶
@@KnitWithHannah Hi Hannah, thank you VERY much for taking so much time to explain. I have put it aside for a bit, but hope to pick it up again either tomorrow night or sometime on Wednesday. I really appreciate all your help🤗
