- This was a pretty extraordinary experience - thanks to NASA for inviting me! The Atlas V 541 rocket took off carrying the Perseverance rover and Ingenuity the Mars helicopter at 7:50 am July 30, 2020. They should arrive in about seven months on February 18, 2021

Did you see laminar flow?
No, neither did I.
Ha!

Yeah
lmao. The rivalry continues.
But really, what amazing camera was this? The dynamic range is massive: pointing at the sun and you still had a bright blue sky?! I felt like I was really there.
Ha, more like turbulent flow!
“taking off from the shore of the cosmic ocean” man that guy painted a masterpiece with his words
Agreed, that was beautiful. "Punching a hole in the sky." That man has a way with words.
It's true, since the beginning of the space exploration we've only wandered on the shore of the vast cosmic ocean. Now it is time for us to set sail to what lies ahead.

@@ukn4045 this kind of optimism seems blind to me. In the short term, we need to fix climate change, this is something we know will have catastrophic consequences otherwise. Space exploration comes afterwards.
When you feel like you are the only one about to look at a rocket launch, there are 2 possibilities:
1) it's a pandemic
2) you are too close
XDDD Great!
3) They are returning to earth without you. That's what you get Dave for getting chip crumbs all over the couch.
4). All your friends are making Tiktok and you are the only one who loves Science.

I get that same feeling of being on this rock when I look at the moon through a telescope and you can see it actually moving, the faint shimmer of atmosphere between me and this celestial body... Always amazes me.
I get the same feeling when I see the ISS pass over at night. It occurs to me that people are like ants, scurrying around, not realizing what's going on in the sky overhead.
Technically you can’t see the Moon moving. It appears to be moving because of the rotation of Earth round it’s axis.
Hey Angus we have the same name lol
@@erblinbeqa6550 have you ever looked at the moon thru a telescope? If you magnify close enough on a windy night the atmosphere obscures and bends the light, making the moon sorta wobble . I'm pretty sure that's what they mean when they say 'move'
If you stand still enough, you can witness the moon and stars moving at a noticable speed. I do it all the time.
It's honestly depressing how little some people care about space exploration.
why?
just think tho, in the next couple years when we return to the moon, and then following this we send people to mars, everyone's gonna be crazy about it! I, personally, am so grateful to be alive to witness the first human to step foot on another planet!
I’m passionate about it but why do other people?
I think it's because humanity is not on point, in 2030/50 when the first human step on Mars it's gonna be trending on the Internet, news, movies, just like in 1969 when they got on the Moon

The part about realizing we're really on a rock hurtling through space really hit me because that's exactly how I felt watching the eclipse. Something about seeing the moon physically blocking the sun with my own eyes just made it all feel more "real" to me. The sun and moon weren't just abstract lights moving through the sky, but they along with the earth were very real objects moving through space. It was definitely the most awe-inspiring moment of my life.

Was about to go to sleep after watching the launch on TV, as I had just gotten back from work and had a doctor's appointment in a few hours, when I heard your legendary voice coming from the TV. I immediately got up and watched your interview before I went back to bed. Good stuff getting to be interviewed by NASA in front of millions of people on live television.
When I was fortunate enough to be there for a launch, the thing that got me the most was not the bright light when the countdown hit zero (It was a night launch, so the light was blindingly bright), but the shock wave that hit your chest ten or fifteen or however many seconds later. I took a crummy phone video of the launch, and you can hear me and my mates just start laughing when that happened. I'm so very happy that you got to experience it firsthand, and got the same glee from it that I did!

It’s my dream to see a rocket launch in person. Living on the west coast in California we only have launches from Vandenberg Airbase. We got to see the Space X launch a while ago but it wasn’t up close. When Space X launched the first manned mission to the ISS it made me emotional. Also it made me proud to be an American. It shows what we can accomplish when we put our problems aside and work together.

I remember seeing my first rocket launch several hundred miles south in West Palm Beach. A few hundred people gathered at the top of the parking structure at Palm Beach International Airport. From that far away, and perpendicular to the flight path of the rocket, you can really get a sense of the speed it is reaching to get to orbit. Years later, another Mars orbiter was launched from Vandenberg AFB here in California. My wife and I got up early in the morning to see it. We found a secluded area (where other people were also waiting to see it), and we saw it leaving earth. Seeing it down range had a similar effect in perceiving the speed it had to reach. Our eyes were the last to see it in person before it left earth’s gravity to reach Mars...rockets never get old!!!
