  • I was in two minds whether to go up in the wind bearing in mind it's only the second outing for this beautiful great bird but I'm glad I did. It's remarkably stable considering it's size. Most of this video is just doing circuits and bumps ... such fun! Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE for regular Build and Fly videos using this link www.youtube.co...

    There's a big difference between 'keeping her up' and making her go exactly where you want her to. With that in mind, never underestimate the value of circuit bashing! Great fun Cliff.

      Hi David, it's a good thing to practice as you say, especially with a model that's still so new. Also the differing wind direction and strength on a field like ours can vary the landings so much. All in all great fun, cheers 🙂👍

      Hi Adam, a classic design definitely, I wonder how many have been built in the last 77 years? The model flew herself really, I just steered her around. I can fly for 15 minutes on the 4s 6200mah battery, only thing missing is the sound of a big old diesel chugging away 🤔👍

    Just watched the second flight of your mercury build. Excellent flight, great to see the project come to fruition after so many years unfinished. Bravo, thank you for sharing.

    Normally I feel like I am watching golf balls. But I enjoyed this maiden flight. You can hear the vibration of the throttle running through the model. It’s a big old bird that should have flown some years ago. And today it finally came to be. Wouldn’t it be something if the original owner watched this.
    You have a fine looking model and a lot of time and care has been taken in it’s rebuild.
    Well done Cliff, now you don’t need to hold your breath any longer.
    A jolly good turn out.

      Hi Nick, this was the second outing for this model, the maiden was a bit more exciting! The original owner passed away back in the 80's unfortunately but his grandson loves the fact his memory lives on and commented as much on the maiden video, have a read ua-cam.com/video/At2z4jGYmK8/v-deo.html, cheers

    Wow! I am not sure if it was the wind or the plane but it looked like it was floating on a soft cloud. If I didn't know better I would accuse you of CGI with a green screen! Seems unreal in a blissful sense. That was peaceful, thanks Cliff.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Рік тому +1

      Hi Kev, definitely no clouds but easy enough to programme some into the software 😁 I think big models just have this almost full-size flying quality that you rarely get with smaller models and that is the ability to almost float as, like you say, as if on a cloud. The wind helped to slow her right down whilst maintaining a good flow over the flying surfaces which enabled me to almost hover her if I choose, good fun 👍🙂

      The differential elevators were interesting. Is that a common way of introducing some roll control on older basically free flight models? Does it give you much roll control?

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Рік тому

      @@sideshowbob5237 Hi Bob, I saw the idea on a three quarter scale Fokker Triplane some time ago, due to the fact I had to decide what area to make the control surfaces looking at the model the rudder looked a bit on the small side so remembering the triplane idea a fellow Club member helped me to program my tx16 to do the same. It does help it to turn quite nicely, a bigger rudder could have done the same thing. Of course you need one Servo on each elevator 👍

    Not really the ideal model for a windy day -- far more suited to those calm summer evenings when there's not a breath of wind and the sun is flirting with the horizon. Still a lot of fun though... reminds me of my early days flying single channel in a time that was free from all this nonsense regulation. Thanks for keeping it real Cliff. A very enjoyable (and nostalgic) nine minutes.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  Рік тому

      I agree Bruce but calm evenings seem to be a thing of the past at the moment, besides which we can't fly after 7pm on this site 😫 The modellers / flyers of 1945 wouldn't believe the direction model flying, or even the World, is going today. Nostalgia isn't just a thing of the past it's actually a longing for the way things used to be ... that is if you're old enough, and lucky enough, to remember it in the first place... but that's progress I suppose 🤔
