Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you got till it's gone They paved paradise & put up a parking lot... Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell....rings true now more than ever....🏡
@@noblshtplz It becomes more and more tragic to think that this era of culture and art has been obliterated in many cases. The Detroit waterfront would have been far more gracious and interesting if these homes had survived.
One of the finest libraries ever seen. I wish Dr. Newman had arranged for the house to become something special, a museum, a document preservation center, something so it would endure intact.
I love when rich people includes their staff in being taking care of after they’re gone. That shows they cared about them as human beings and didn’t see them as robots to do their every day bidding. Saving a puppy! 😊 My favorite parts of the house was that alcove by the stairs that overlooks the river. I would make that into a reading nook. The Morning Room is my favorite.
This beautiful structure was replaced with a parking lot. The many number of remarkable buildings that were replaced with parking lots, exit ramps, highways, or ugly new buildings is tragic.
He must have been a wonderful man to have saved a dog like that. He also had a very beautiful home! Such a shame that a place of beauty like that was destroyed.😢
Such beautiful woodwork, you don’t see that attention to detail anymore. So in love with that library, I could spend hours there. It’s a shame that it was torn down for a freaking parking lot. Places like that are disappearing too fast. The younger generation will never know the pride of work that went into these places. Thank you for the tour.
@ThisHouse - what a gooooorgeous mansion! It's difficult to choose a favourite room. It's such a shame that this mansion - like so many others - was razed and turned into a parking lot for then to be all but forgotten 😞😞😞
What a lovely home. I especially loved the library and the Dr.’s office. (Was that a Millet above the Dr’s fireplace?! Gorgeous!) The bedrooms were heavenly… Thank you Ken!
The home, even with its grand entrance foyer, conveyed a sense of comfort. I love the fact that the Library’s chairs were often moved to achieve the best reading atmosphere. Fun tour, Ken, thanks Victorian Society for sponsoring this episode.
I used to pass by there every day on my daily walk from Indian Village to Belle Isle. I always wondered what had been there because the wrought iron fence and gate (which had been padlocked) were still there. They were just removed a few months ago (writing this November 2024). This video satisfies my long-held curiosity. Thanks!
What a beautiful Mansion the home of Dr.Newman. I loved the dinning room facing the lake. Very sad at the end to see the home was destroyed to make way for a parking lot. My great grandfather lived in Omaha Nebraska on Dodge St.a beautiful 2 story home I have photos. Well the property was sold, the home long gone and what sits on it's glorious land is the Joslyn Art Museum. That is my consolation; my great grandfather and family would be happy a Museum sits on their property not a parking lot! Love the Dr with his millions took care of others upon death. As a dog lover, the memory of the puppy touched my 💖
As usual, the library was my favorite room 😊 This mansion is one of my favorites you have featured on your channel so far, Ken. Shame it was torn down. There are still a few old, large mansions along Jefferson, one of which was for sale about 2 years ago for about $2 million I think. Huge limestone mansion that was mostly intact, though If I remember correctly there were a few rooms that needed a bit of work but not too much.
It is a travesty that so many of these phenomenal homes were bull dozed, torn down, and paved over. Kills me. All that beautiful wood, and all those magnificent built-ins. It guts me. Also, I love that a police officer allowed this 64 year old man to go out on the ice. The police officer just stood there holding a rope. 🤦🏽♀️
Very beautiful. Yet another gorgeous piece of architecture form a by gone era destroy by “modern sensibilities and taste”. Modern architecture is crap.
Detroit has been decimated as far as some of these grand homes are concerned. So sad to bulldoze over beautiful architecture like that and to toss history away for a parking lot.
What a shame this splendid home was destroyed. I hate to see these old classic mansions lost to parking lots or crackerbox developments. Why wasn't it converted to condos?
Such a beautiful home and a kind owner… and they return his good deeds by paving it over with a parking lot. Tragic😢

Agreed...just a damn shame...

The world needs more people like the Newmans. I’m sorry their house wasn’t adaptively reused. This was a very nice tribute to them. Thank you, Ken!
That library and stair hall were gorgeous. All that beautiful wood- gone. What a shame.

The library is to die for.
He lived well. Gave to the world, it seems. No amount of bulldozing can change that.
Wow!!! What a beautiful home! Very nice!
Beautiful home , especially the library . What a wonderful man ! 🐾🐾💙
That library and it's unique furniture! A philanthropist maybe, but saving that dogs life goes beyond money!
disgusting the estate was bulldozed.😢
Puppy Power👊🏻🐶🐾

Another very homey mansion despite it’s size~thank you Ken! And the dog story was heartwarming❤️ Bessie’s dressing room was my favorite💖
Thank you for your dedication to these most beautiful architectural forms of history. Enjoy watching and listening to detailed historic information.

They paved over his estate? WTF!??? What is wrong with people.
What a beautiful house and grounds, just love it
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot. 😢
Beautiful

I have an Airedale!❤❤❤ Dr. Newman is forever a great man.
The way we take a masterpiece of architecture and craftsmanship into an ugly building and parking lot never ceases to astound me.
Such a shame to destroy these beautiful works of art in house form!
Beautiful…my fav style of architecture 👍🏾🥂
As usual, the library was my favorite room 😊

Nice change from French stuff, and the 'ancient' square tower might suggest the lone survivor of several others, refenestrated of course. 👍
Did you show the inside of the crenellated tower? What rooms were in it?
Absolutely disgusting shame that the house and grounds were demolished, just sickening.

He was a good man and he had a great house
Mansions are overrated, and there is too much dust and maintenance. That's probably why he used the smallest room the most. It was cozy.
I will take the library and donate the rest of the house to u all :)
Yes ! 📖📚💙
I like the library
It would take many employees to keep it up, cooks servants garners and so on and on
Looks amazing. Location is trash
'they paved it over for a parking lot': NICE MOVE
I think the mansion should have been preserved.
Lovely home and estate! The powers that be destroy everything in their wake.
Very beautiful. Yet another gorgeous piece of architecture form a by gone era destroy by “modern sensibilities and taste”. Modern architecture is crap.
there is a home just like this in Lloyd Harbor Long Island.
According to NotJustBikes cities were not built for the car: they were _bulldozed_ for the car. This is a sad example.
Detroit has been decimated as far as some of these grand homes are concerned. So sad to bulldoze over beautiful architecture like that and to toss history away for a parking lot.
such a shame it was paved over for a parking lot☹️🙄
Money is everything when you haven’t got it.
What a shame this splendid home was destroyed. I hate to see these old classic mansions lost to parking lots or crackerbox developments. Why wasn't it converted to condos?
So he married into it, he needed a coin toss.
A parking lot. Too bad the family didn’t have something in a will that it must be persevered. I guess Joni Mitchell was right!
Closing your medical practice to go into tobacco....yes, it actually IS all about money smh
