- This one's a little bit different as we're carrying out the last few little jobs required to make this machine work properly and hopefully for years to come too.

Still very much on my bucket list of video recorders I want to own. Now have two NTSC Superbetas but not a PAL.
They are amazing machines and still chuckle every time a load a cassette in my own machine. Try and get a later one with the yellow back-up battery (not the coin type one) if you can as they'll have less issues with rotting components due to those horrible black pads that Sony used to fit modifications/ revisions.
Ooit gerepareerd in de '90 in Nederland bij de importeur Sony Badhoevedorp, beginnend vanaf de SL 8000/8080. Prachtige tijd. Ook deze prachtige SL HF 950 kwam in de sloop terecht (eigen voorraad TD). Prachtige combinatie met de micro Black Trinitron CRT televisie of de industriële monitoren met de bijnaam "de kubus".
It really was such a good time and so sad so many machines just ended up being scraped.

i only seen one of this my mate payed alot for it big time of all the decks the betacam sp 1800 uvw is the many i have fixed in one go
i worked on 75 bvw like toy moving parts around from decks to get them working i fine they will take betacam sx tapes for audio if i cover up the tape holes
i picked up some betacam sx tapes with betacam sp tapes zero to lose by trying the tapes in the decks at the time bob
They're wonderful machines but getting quite rare now in good condition and/or working and that's certainly pushing the price up.
This is cool stuff! I have a Sony Betamax SL-5000 that was getting fixed, but the guy who was fixing it said he couldn't finish because the servo wasn't staying locked in. He replaced all the capacitors, but the tracking was still messed up. If there is any advice you can give, MrBetaByte, I would really appreciate it! Thank you!
It does start getting a little more in-depth and I have a C5 and a SLO1700 with similar issues which I'll be sharing on here once they're done. Next things to check are the path of the control pulses - are they getting to the servo section and having an effect on the servo and also checking the colour carrier is getting as far as the servo section too. At the moment it looks like you're not getting proper lock on either the video head motor or the capstan - the same issue I'm finding on the two machines I have here. I'll let you know what I found though in case it helps you out.
The 950 is great, I have eight of them some are still new and packaged . The recorder is very fun in daily use 😄

Wow - some new old stock ones too! What remotes do you have for them? I understand the European models had the full feature RMT-232 as standard but it was an optional extra in the UK which is a shame as having the jog wheel on the remote was very useful.
@@MrBetaByte In Germany, the RMT231 was the standard remote control included. The RMT232 was only optionally available and had to be ordered separately. I have for all recorders the original and then I have two RMT232. Some of my Betamax recorders have in a few small clips here on UA-cam 😄

Ah OK. Yes, really need a scope and that point as the signal path for the control pulses and the colour carrier need to be traced. What happens if the capstan/ head motor free speed is adjusted?

I use a copybox to capture playback but it also has an HDMI output which I connect to the TV. This SMARTTV has composite in as well though so very useful. Older flat screen TV's are worth hanging on to.
