  • A brief history and demonstration of the turbine-driven power heads used on portable and built-in vacuums, starting with the TUEC "School Tool" and moving on to the Preco, Dupro, T21, Carpet Cat, and several versions of the market-dominating Turbocat. Also including two designs by Wessel-Werk, and the unique bare floor turbine.

I instantly recognized the Turbocat, Rug Rat, and the Vacuflo handle, all of which I grew up with at my parents' house which was built in 1996. They hated using the Rug rat because it's noisy as hell but I always liked using that one when it was my chore to vacuum, haha! I think they got the new turbocat head, the one with the v-belt, I forget, i think something happened to the original one (the beige plastic, the one you showed before the translucent one). But I'm pretty sure they're still using that handle you're showing here, as well as the original power unit. I used to enjoy standing outside near the exhaust which always had that "vacuum cleaner smell" to it. If I remember correctly, it was a cyclonic unit with no filter or bag to change, just a clear plastic basin to empty. I remember taking a piece of aluminum foil or a wire and holding it between the two electric contacts on the inlet to make the system turn on, after seeing how the non-switched hose and switched hose differed, the former having a solid metal ring at the inlet connector to turn the system on as soon as it was inserted.

I owned one of those T21s many years ago but never knew much about the history. Great video and collection! Thanks!

That green Turbocat looks kinda like a first iMac!

Same time period as those colourful iMacs, the N64 around that time did that as well.

I’d love to find one of those T21 heads. They seem to me that they’re the best cleaning head with that beater bar.

I remember us having one of those see-through green models when I was working for Uncle George. That brushroll had to get cleaned daily!

    Fascinating collection!
I have a turbohead of a recent model from Weasel Werk which is the TK 286. I used it with a cheap bagless Bissell canister and it did a decent job on the carpets at my home.
It would be fun to demonstrate the cleaning performance of the turbo tools in your collection with the Wet & Dry canisters like the Shop Vac's and the Ridgid's.

We used to have that T210 turbine head with the grey decals a long time ago, I remember it having the orange and grey bristles which at the time I had no idea why they would have that until I saw this video. We still have that TP210 which I think we got around the same time as the T210, though I could be wrong on that. Our T210 was later replaced with another TP210 around 2002 which has the deep sweep agitator. We did had one more which I'm pretty sure was a T210 but it was grey with white bumpers and it had shining silver decals if I recall correctly. I was told that was our first turbocat when we had our Beam 287S installed in 1990. From what I remember, we've had problems with that one. After a few attempts of trying to fix that turbocat, we ended up getting rid of it around the late 2000's. I remember using that green clear Vacuflo Turbocat one time with either a 466Q or a 566Q unit, man did it had alot of power! Especially with a full canister it had when I used it.

I just got a t-21 yesterday, I doubt I'll ever find a carpet cat, but I do plan to get a turbo cat tp210 eventually. I really want to see about getting an old Hoover central vac in the future.

Just a fun fact, the T21 was developed by HP and Black&Decker. The preco on another point, I think I would prefer a preco to a str8 suction nozzle at the time. I am on the hunt for a preco and a beige or white tk2.

Wonder if these would make your Shop Vac a tank to use all over in your home with the added power of an uprights cleaning? Or these would also work on a vintage Regina Electrikbroom too?

I don't know if you could possibly do a history on electric heads too, carpet and mini stair/upholstery I guess it depends on your collection.

I'm not sure if this was the first turbine nozzle but one of those came with the Sunbeam Dual Deluxe canister vacuum that was available in the 1950's. In general electric nozzles will clean better than turbo nozzles and will not have the problems that turbine nozzles do. For someone who doesn't want to purchase a new electric hose, I would suggest one of the battery powered nozzles, either the hide a hose CX1000 or the one made by Perfect Products. They run for about an hour per charge and will clean as well as any other electric nozzle without all of the issues that turbine nozzles have.

I have a question, do you recommend the older style turbo cat or the the newer ex style?
