This is one of my favorite of the Cthulhu mythos short stories that I've heard thus far that were penned by authors other than HP Lovecraft himself.
I was suffering from "storytellers block" with my lovecraftian D@D story, but this story gave me an epiphany
I wanna play!!
I love the intro piano piece, it’s incredible, sounds very Erik Satie-esque! 😊
Absolutely love Horrorbabble. You could read a grocery list I'd be mesmerised
Sounds like Ubbo-Sathla was the mummy and daddy of all shoggoths.
Sounds like the real ancient tablets with knowledge of the primordial gods was the friends we made along the way
My thanks for this one, Ian, probably my favorite CAS tale. I encountered it quite a few years ago on the dusty shelves of some forgotten library, and I'm immensely pleased to be reacquainted with it. Your narration was flawless. I've slowly become aware that my "inner voice" when I read horror stories is, well, very much like yours, not to put too fine a point on it. The only other time anything like this has occurred is that, after hearing William Burroughs (RIP) read his work, I "hear" my readings of his work in his voice. In this current case, though, it seems to apply to horror stories in general. In case you're wondering, I don't believe I'm losing my mind just yet...
Love clark ashton smith my youngests name is ashton
One of my twin boys is named Harlan after Harlan Ellison
Both of these comments make me happy, thank you
I liked this one! Very atmospheric and creepy.. I love discovering tales of the mythos I've never heard off 🤘
"...swollen and yeasty amid the vapor and slime... Even HPL can't beat that. Who's hungry?
What a trippy ride. Thanks for that one Ian. You killed it.
A valuable lesson: in the Mythos universe, if you look at a pretty rock for too long, you will sh*t your brain.
Yasss! I love me some C.A.S! Thanks, HB!! XD
I love how dangerous and exotic weed seemed to these guys. Machen and Robert Howard and a bunch of them refer to hash or "cannabis indica" as some hellish horror drug.
It does spawn horrible, disfigured troglodytes vaguely made in the shape of man, hippies.
While drinking cocaine laced CocaCola and smoking opium cigarettes...
Thank you very much for uploading this, Clark Ashton Smith is one of my favorites and it is really cool listening to his contribution to the Cthulhu Mythos
Please don't give up! I love your audiobooks and stories! They also help me in improving my english language!! thanksssss!!
Absolutely brilliant work, thank you very much!!
This story is so good !! Perfect atmosphere created by the soundtrack!!
Wow.
What a fantastic story and brilliant narration.
Thank you.
🦑
You nail the narrator voice for horror audiobooks. 👍🏻
Brilliant as always
Wonderful work!🙌🔥🐙
Excellent story and reading! My hubby asked me to tell you that he enjoyed it tremendously also.
Thanks to you and your husband, Julia!
A debauch of Hashish! Ooh La La... Another beautiful reading, Ian. Bravo!
As always love your narration ❤
Thank you for all that you do.
Brilliant narration, as ever.
Excellent! Subscribed!
That was just gorgeous! Sometimes Smith seems to get lost in flowery descriptions, but not this time.
Compared to Lovecraft he’s a walk through a meadow!
So many fun new words in this one
That was neat! Curio shops, man. I'll have to listen again.
Thanks for doing this one! I never heard it before. I really like it!
Ever since hearing this, I have pondered if the main character going back in time caused himself and the old wizard to disappear. Or, if they both disappeared for the same reason, albeit during different epochs of time.
I have always liked Clark Ashton Smith, but like him more and more as I hear more of his stories.
Great job, Ian!
Finally got a chance to listen to this thank you 🙏
Possible an opal geode? Wow, kinda neat to imagine. Never seen one in any museum. Don't know enough of opal composition.
Oh my.. another yeasty, slimy journey through time. The star quarried tablets, I want to know more
Fantastic!
Thanks for the vid sir.
An amazing monster. Somehow, I feel as though we all are condemned to do battle with the primeval goo that is Ubbo Sathla, which is the ever diminishing distinction between things.
like the ouroboros aspect of this
i love the “dream in a dream” inception-ish aspect to this, but being a “trance” instead of a dream with that element of not even being yourself in the trance and losing sense of your former self and becoming someone else doing what they did in a different time, only to do it again and lose that new self to try to go deeper because the sorcerer had a different intention than the original “self” of the protagonist, and the sorcerer was real and did this at aome point in the past so its sort of like something between time travel and mutual possesion but not really, all of which is super trippy
it makes you question: are these actions done by the sorcerer in the past actually done by the protagonist? or was the protagonist just “observing” from a first person perspective without any sense of true control? OR, maybe its both because both the protagonist and the sorcerer and everythint organic all link back to Ubbo-Sathla, the very thing they both tamper with at different times, they are it and it is them and they are each-other
love this one
Yes, thanks indeed
More Howard than Lovecraft, I think.
I believe a clouded stone is an opal from Australia. Rare indeed in the 18th century, and even into the 20th waste of energy ... hmm.
I love these readings!
While you listen to HPL’s words ... transfixed, lucid and yet fogged. Ubbo Sathla continues to watch over the Walls of Eryx. And waits. Formless. Patient. Hungry.
Fabulous
Very Funny thing is that there is an actual Book of Eibon.
Clark Ashton and then goddamn crazy ass names.
:") ...yesss so happy
Spoiler
Are we to assume that in the far future someone will come across a milky crystal and be led to stare into its glowing heart and see Paul in a mythical city called London.
We’re all devo!
A classic very nice!!!!!!! The brother of Azathoth!!!!! Very Nice!!!!!!!!
Have you thought of doing city of the singing flame? Definitely my favorite Clark Ashton Smith story
Eventually, Lucas!

Yep...here we go....Hey guy, don't you know what happened the last time some newspaperman went messing around with weird stones in funky boxes? He was in a church too. But you took it home?? Oh Well...have fun look in for your sanity son😃😃
What about that farmer who got Gray shattering pigs and a crazy wife. from that meteorite in his well......no "makin bacon" for him anymore.😃😃😃
Rock and Roll ain't Noise Pollution...but it'll damn well screw up your celery, bell pepper, onion, okra, tomatoes, garlic...and saxifridges...whatever the hell those things are😃😃😃😃
Someone should create something called "Stones from the Mythos" Ian...
Hey but that's not a story. that's exactly what happened when i took too much lsd, i still remember clearly the formless thing chilling in the mud while i was lying out there like a clueless worm.
Seriously i'm a bit worried now, i thought this was just a bad trip.
Grear
So what about Azatoth?
👍
‘th’. ‘phth’ lol - how long did it take you to get those first couple of names round your tongue? rotfl great job with them. ;)
It's always a challenge, Alexa - and I don't I'll ever nail them 100%!
Keep pressuring UA-cam about your demonetization. GM Danielson got remonetized today after being demonetized for 3 months. They hit him for the same reason as you. You might have to cull some videos that contain certain keywords. It's very ridiculous. Some of the words of course are common for horror stories. Like su-icide, d-ea-th, etc... I wouldn't doubt if even horror is flagged.
He did, but that was the first time his channel was demonetized. It took us 6 months to get remonetized the first time. We're moving away from monetization now. Thanks for the support though! :)
I possess a copy and you can get one from Chaosium.
You sure this is by Clark Ashton Smith and not Robert Howard?
AlucardNoir yes
@@MrJedimedic ...so... that was a rhetorical question referencing the heavy use of Howard's Hyperborean age.
AlucardNoir hard to convey sarcasm in type.
TAARA HÄVITA
Take that, Lovecraft! My imaginary eldritch gribblie is better than your imaginary eldritch gribblie!
