  • Lecture by Nicolas Vogel. This course is an introduction to polymer science and provides a broad overview over various aspects of polymers, from synthetic methods, via polymer physics and materials properties to processing into products. The overarching aim of the course is to connect molecular properties and chain architecutres of polymers with resulting macroscopic properties.
This chapter introduces bulk polymer properties. We first discuss characterization tools required to investigate the bulk behavior of polymers. X-Ray diffraction is used to investigate the crystallinty, differential scanning calorimetry investigates their thermal properties and phase transitions. We then focus on amorphous properties, discuss the glass transition temperature as a 2nd order phase transition and how it is influenced by the molecular properties of polymer chains.

I would suggest to watch the video on 1.5 speed 🙂
Very good explanations with insightful depth of the theory to get a good intuitive understanding of polymer chemistry and its characteristics. Chapeau!
Ive never been very good or interested in chemistry, but this is actually entertaining to watch.

In the slides, specific volume (this is the first derivative of the specific Gibbs energy with respect to pressure) under the second order phase transition should be deleted and replaced by coefficient of isobaric thermal expansion or coefficient of isothermal compression
