"Phoenix of Stars" is a medley of the two songs "Murders" by Joe Hawley and "Rebirth of the Expanse" by myself. The contrasting themes of both songs represents a phoenix, a mythical creature that dies, but is magically reborn from ashes.
"Murders" is a song written by Joe Hawley, and is from the album "Hawaii: Part II". This song, hence its name, symbolizes a poetic death, as well as themes of evil, regret, depression, and hopelessness. This song binds itself beautifully into "Hawaii: Part II" because of the album's cryptic nature and openness to various interpretations.
"Rebirth of the Expanse" is an original composition by myself, and it symbolizes an uprising or rebirth of a person, object or concept. It begins with mysterious ambience, which illustrates lonliness in space. Suddenly, but quietly, something feels like it is beginning to be built in a place where there once was nothing, while maintaing a galatic feeling. The theme quickly changes to loud and strong, as if a force of good begins to fight evil. The middle of the song illustrates struggles encountered by protagonists of a story, and finally ends with a clear conclusion victory.
Together, both songs create a powerful contrast that represents struggle and hardships, but an eventual victory. Because of the medey's themes of space, it illustrates the universe, meaning this story created by the songs can be applied universally. In the context of this specific performance, the medley represents a victorious return to the formal Jabberfest performances after a hault due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Murders" represents the lives and happiness unfortunately stolen by the pandemic, and "Rebirth of the Expanse" reminds us of our gradual progress, and path to victory.
