This is why so many doubters become atheists after actually reading the bible, and why so many lite-Christians remain Christians by not reading the bible.
Imagine if before you can become a christian or minister or indoctrinate your children you had to read the full bible and have an answer for each issue
@@MindShift-Brandon A lot of prominent Atheists on UA-cam de-converted after reading the bible, often while training to be a minister. I don't understand how anyone can read it and not come to the conclusion that it was crafted by men to control other humans.
I attended a one year program on biblical study, and on the first day, the principle gave us a warning. He said that if we are serious about keeping our faith, then we need to be on our guard, because the statistics show that the number one reason people leave the faith is due to actually studying the Bible. At the time I thought, yeah, but my faith is strong , that won't happen to me...
"Not morally useful in this day and age" is spot on. We atheists are so often by told by "holier-than-thou" Christians that we get really our morals from the bible even if we say we don't, or we have no morals, or some BS like that. The fact is they don't get their morals from the bible either, they just use it as a cherry-picked cover-all misquoted or misrepresented excuse to behave exactly how they wanted to in the first place.
@@MindShift-Brandon Ancient primitives just stepping out of the stone age might have written a book like the Bible. Maybe the Assyrians and Babylonians might have been barbaric as well. The ultimate Bible is YOU. Your moral sensitivity, your internal sense of justice. God breathed into your psyche. Thank you for awakening us all.
Yep, cultists are just the worst, they are so dumb as well, god even says you will be forgiven if you ask for it, BUT never once did he say that punishment wont still follow, an example being someone forgiving their kids murderer, does the murderer just get let go cuz he was forgiven? HAHAHAHAHA HELL NO THEY GET 25 TO LIFE LMFAO ROFL
Speaking of the commandments the first 5 could easily be just one commandment and you shouldnt kill, commit adultery, steal, lie and be jealous could also be one commandment saying you should respect the integrity and property of others instead of pointing out a select few crimes while leaving out more serious ones. Its almost like they were written by someone religious with a very narrow minded world view.
And not only that but to stay faithful to christianity most christians has formed their beliefs for their own benefit or according to their own morals completely ignoring the very foundation of christianity. Like when god says christians will suffer trough the tribulation you either invent the rapture to spare yourself or kill your children to spare them. And with the concept of hell ,as a place of everlasting torture that christians completely made up, we can clearly see they have no problem with other people suffering forever while they cant suffer for a very short period of time.
You're the most common sensical "commentator" on the matter I've heard so far. Cutting right through the bull.... no brakes. A proper job! My hat is off to you sir. 👏👌👍
appreciate hearing that. Its a crowded space already, and though I am certain I am not the first to have any of these thoughts, I have been intentional about trying to have a unique purview. So again, thanks for the encouragement.
You are my new hero Brandon! Not to put you on a pedestal at all, but I am so glad that you are such an EDUCATED former Christian. I do admire your knowledge, and your ability to put forth the Truth. THANK YOU for your channel. Keep on keeping on with showing the utter nonsense of the Bible!
@@MindShift-Brandon You're making it sound like God doesn't do anything in our lives as part of his relationship with us, this just shows that you were never a true born again Christian to begin with. God didn't just give us the bible and that's it he interacts with us in our relationship with him as true born again Christians. If you never had an interaction with God, then you never even had a relationship with him to begin with. God cured me of a nervous condition that I had since childhood of biting my fingernails until they bled, he helped me overcome emotional issues that were driving me to most likely eventually go on a killing spree had something NOT been done to help me to overcome them because I wasn't doing that great of a job even with the help that I was getting from other people because their help didn't help at all. In the end it was God that helped me to become the person that I am today. So, you have no clue whatsoever of what you are talking about because you never had a relationship with God to begin with, you were never a true Christian in the first place. If you were a true born again Christian claiming to be an ex-Christan now you wouldn't be denying the existence of God while being an ex-Christian because you would know beyond all doubt that God does exist as a former true born again ex-Christian. You as a true born again ex-Christian would be like having an ex-wife or an ex-husband, you wouldn't be able to deny the existence of your ex-wife or ex-husband you just wouldn't be their wife or husband anymore at least in your eyes. But what you fail to understand is that no one can be a true born again ex-Christian because salvation can't be lost, your soul belongs to God after you get saved. Your soul and reborn spirit become a new creature when you're a true born again Christian and that new creature is 100% loyal to God, so every action that you take against God is NOT being done by your true self which is the new creature in God's eyes it is being done by your flesh. I personally don't believe that you or anyone else that claims to be an ex-Christain were ever true born again Christians to begin with, but if you were then you are still saved because you are taking your actions against God in the flesh and NOT the new creature that would be your true self in God's eyes if you were a true born again Christian. I can understand one choosing to end their relationship with God in the flesh if they are a true born again Christian for whatever crazy and stupid reason that they could give to do such a thing, but I can't see a true born again ex-Christian denying the existence of God as a true born again ex-Christian because the "ex" in an ex-wife or ex-husband can't be denied their existence because they still exist. Do you get what I am saying when it comes to this? If you are denying the existence of God now as a so called ex-Christain then that only proves that you were never a true born again Christian to begin with because when you become a true born again Christian you get confirmation so that you know the following three things beyond all doubt and they are: 1) God's very existence. 2) Your salvation. 3) Your relationship with God.
@@MindShift-Brandon Let's keep in mind here that the bible is written to fallen human beings that have sinned against God. If sin never entered the world through Adam and Eve's sin, then the bible would've never been written to begin with. Adam and Eve were equals and women and men are still equals in God's eyes, but we as humans have been placed under a curse due to sin being in the world and in that curse, women are to be ruled over NOT by men, but by their husbands. Genesis 3:16 (KJV): “Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.” But in the bible the husband is also told to be loving and respectful to his wife in that ruling over her and NOT cruel. Both atheists and ex-Christians (who were never true born again Christians in the first place from my perspective of things since they deny the existence of God as ex-Christians which they wouldn't even be able to do as ex-Christians because an ex-Christian would still know that God exists) always point out verses in the bible that support their case while ignoring the clarification verses that tell us how to do specific things like how a husband is supposed to rule over his wife and etc. That is 100% wrong to do, and it just shows how wrong both atheists and ex-Christians are when it comes to their attitude against God and the bible.
@@ShannonQ says: *Agreed...we should fix that!* I would love to fix it, but sadly I think the damage is too far done for it to be fixed and it needs to be replaced which is why in the end God will destroy this current creation and create everything new.

@@MindShift-Brandon That's because half of the books are missing from out of the Bible is why the Bible leaves certain things unanswered or unclear. Because the rest of the books of the prophets are missing from out of its pages.
In a recent debate I watched with Richard Carrier, he was asking the question that if Jesus really had the knowledge of God, why did he not introduce the idea of germ theory (the lepers) or challenge the common views about food (cleanliness laws)? Instead it was clear he was simply a person of his own time and culture, and not a divine character with the nature of God.
This is Christ's witness of the beginning that has parts from before Ge:1:1. Proverb:8:22-36: The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him; Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men. Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death. This Abraham's High Priest: Heb:7:1-4: For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. Ge:14:18: And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. Ge:18:1-3: And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
One argument commonly used against theistic evolution is that it attacks God's character, in other words it makes God mean. I don't understand this, because taking the Bible literally makes him much, much meaner.

@@MindShift-Brandon I checked the other comments first, to see if anyone else had mentioned it. I was shocked that no one else had yet! I DIED when you looked up like that.
Excellent effort. Some time, when you are inclined, give us a comparison of the actual words of Jesus vs the epistles of Paul. We would be assuming, of course, that Paul wrote his epistles. Last time I checked, there were 3 pages of Jesus and 65 pages of Paul.
You’re a very intelligent man! I started reading the Bible and did Bible studies because I lost my Dad. I thought I would find peace and comfort. I became more depressed and thought I was crazy. Watching your videos helps me!
Ironically I'm in the middle of talking the course from Google on becoming a data analyst so was psyched after discovering your content to see this title! Thanks!❤❤
I agree! This channel is eventually going to blow up. He’s concise, to the point and really knows the Christian religion. I’d love to see him do debates!
I'd like to ask a Christian: If you literally heard a voice telling you to sacrifice your child, assuming you wouldn't immediately believe it's god and go do it, what _else_ would need to happen to convince you that it _was_ god, and that you really _should_ go do it? I think if they could entertain this thought experiment, they might be able to come to understand the perspective of the skeptic who answers the question "what would convince you" with "I don't know."
@@Mar-dk3mp I'd rather be in a Cult of atheism or desim or many things than live in the fake illusion of Christanity denying the truth about the bible. You are doing nothing to prove your faith is real but sound like a mad radical afraid his comfort box is about to be overturned and dumped on the ground. All you have to do is prove the supernatural events claimed in the bible are real. It is that simple. Prove it with facts and evidence not bible verses. Faith is not fact believe is not evidence the bible is not a self -proving document.
What you demonstrate with data in this video is just what so many people instinctively realize once they start really reading the Bible. This is ultimate truth from the Creator of the Universe?! I also think it's why there is such a gap between what believers' confess ("The Bible is the word of God") and what they so often do (ignore/neglect the Bible). I did my own little data analysis of Jesus' message, hell/damnation/judgment passages vs. love/forgiveness. Roughly I found that the hell to love ratio was about 10 to one in Matthew, Mark and Luke. That is ten times as many verses have Jesus preaching hellfire versus love! John, of course, turns this on its head and the love to hell ratio I found to be about 3 to 2, what I call the extreme makeover of Jesus found in the last gospel.
Very appreciative of the work you put in to your videos and the clarity by which a present them, but mostly for the kind demeanor, you keep when you present these. Great job!
Thank you Jeff, I apprecaite that a lot. Sometimes I feel myself push it or go a little too harsh though. We will see if you still feel this way after Sunday's video this weekend. But appreciate the support!
Firebrand atheist, bubbling over with enthusiasm to share this all this data...!! Feels like a primer for an atheist Bible Study session. I began seriously deconstructing my faith back when #TheBibleReloaded was uploading episodes of their Atheist Bible Study; I think it was a weekly thing back then, and that channel did a lot to help me understand what I was reading, but they did it in such a purposely vulgar way that it wasn't something I felt comfortable sharing with any loved ones who were Christian. Most of the atheist UA-cam stuff at that time was kinda angrier and maybe a little angstier than now. I'd be willing to watch an Atheist Bible Study series again, but only if it had the kind of tone this channel has. I don't mind humor, but I don't particularly feel the need to blaspheme my entire way through it. Still, I respected Hannah (Hugo) and Jake for doing it page by page, verse by verse, cover to cover. I wish they'd have published the titles that way. Now it's hard to find the specific books, chapters and verses without potentially wading through several hours of their content. The topics covered on this channel are done with the kind of respect that often tempts me to share with my parents. Years ago, I woulda sent something like this to them, but now my mom is in a nursing home, and my stepdad takes such wonderful care of her, but Jesus, prayer and the Bible are kinda their whole world now. It comforts them. I won't say it's harmless, but it's not up to me to educate them at this point. The nursing home itself is run by nuns; I walk through a chapel on the way to see them each time i visit. I don't think it's the right time anymore to try to be confrontational. Thanks for these videos, man. I find this channel's overall messaging somehow quietly comforting, but I keep wishing this had been around like a decade ago. Nevertheless, if this channel ever needs ideas for more content, a new Bible Study for atheists could be pretty badass. I'd watch if it could be done with #MindShift's level of respect, understanding and dedication.
Thank you so much. That is really kind and encouraging. Its amazing they went verse by verse. Im gonna have to check that out. I am planning, starting in a few weeks, to every Thursday cover 1 book of the bible from an atheist perspective. It wont be all that detailed but will hit the high notes of authorship, context, time , relation, issues etc
To be fair, Hannah and Jake were doing more of a satirical approach than a scholarly one; Athough Hannah did try to bring more a scholarly side to it I'm addition to the satire. Iirc they did mention this in at least one of their first readings. There are definitely better channels for a page by page scholarly approach. 😄
@@whatwecalllife7034 Yes, I kinda needed their jolt of blasphemy back then to rupture my fear of The Devil. Kinda like ripping off a bandage. I also lost touch before the Hugo/Hannah transition; was that for real or also satire? I think I got too busy to keep up with it all after starting their #QuranReloaded series. They had a surprising amount of scholarly knowledge alongside their barbed wit. It was a pretty intense time to deconstruct on UA-cam back then. Their "satire" hit me like trial by fire. Each of their episodes challenged my courage almost every time. I used to close the window, then open it back up and go back to where I left off. I used to rage with myself to keep going. I was so scared I was gonna go to Hell because of those two blaspheming scamps!😆
Brilliant video - thank you. Loved it. Wished I had this when I deconstructed my 'faith' so I think will be invaluable for future people coming out of this story they were told as a child. Big Thumbs Up.
i honestly can’t imagine how painful and scary it must have been to go through the process of no longer having this belief in god. i’ve always considered myself more agnostic/spiritual, so the idea of the bible being -as you said- more or less a piece of history with a few good and bad morals, it doesn’t scare me very much, as my identity is not intertwined with said book and morals. it scares me more how long people have been supportive of this book, manipulated it, and spread it from one person to another. it scares me because i have family that believe in god, in jesus, in heaven, etc. it makes me unsure of how to behave around them, which sucks because i’ve always struggled to feel grounded around my family in one way or another. with that, i appreciate how you are not only compassionate towards non-believers, but believers too. it’s like a hand to hold on the journey of breaking this belief down, and it’s reassuring. you’ve stated before “im not better than them, they’re not better than me, im not worse than them, they’re no worse than me,” and that really helps to keep are they forefront of my mind when i meet a believer; especially when i remember that it is only partially their fault for believing so firmly. your compassion is not false, or condescending either, which is also helpful. they’ve truly been lied to and misled. thank you for sharing your time, and your story! much love!
I like the way you present your views without bashing, because in the end, all any of us really want is the truth, facts, as to why we're here, what's going on....😎🤔🙂
I’ve published a few studies using computational text analysis and I’ve never considered conducting an analysis on Bible text. This is inspiring. It would be interesting to extract more objective insights from the actual text, instead of other people’s interpretations.
I very much appreciate this approach to analyzing the Bible. I love numbers and data, and I think many of the points become pretty obvious given the numbers.
Speaking of words used in the Bible, I was looking in a concordance once for the word "forgiveness" in the Old Testament. It only appeared once (in singular again in plural). I was amazed to see, just before it on the list the number of occurrences of "foreskin". I guess they are many times more important than forgiveness.
On the note of divorce, I think I read somewhere that divorce rate among conservative / evangelical christians in America are actually higher than the population-at-large. This is because they were forced to be married early (to prevent them from desiring to sin) and as a result have a less happy marriage. And this is just the statistic based on couples who are legally divorced, not ones who maintain toxic unhappy marriage.
Many people argue that the New Testament comes to show the true God, kind, compassionate, loving. Yet in the Old Testament we have orders for stoning, murder, and the like. However in the new testament... we have atrocious, eternal suffering for most of the world's population. It seems to me that the Old Testament is much nicer.
Dude, in really love your videos. Your video topics and execution have a style that’s distinctly yours, and you have a great way to explaining things that makes it easy to understand (though sometimes it can get a little hard to follow as you do tend to talk quickly with little breaks between phrases). Keep up the great work!
Congrats on getting that youtube money! You are my new favorite! Your content is insanely rich and referenced. While my atheism is not a secret, I don't wear it on my sleeve either. I do find it very helpful when I am able to respond when asked about my beliefs. Unless you are ready with a calm rationed response then you will become part of their confirmation process. The bible is self defeating if we could only get christians read it.
Thank you, Kurt! that so encouraging to hear! Man, thats true. Any little leak in our defense, or pause, or us wanting to really understand etc, and BAM, they just take it as "ope their wrong, i knew it." thanks for being here!
I still wonder why God wouldn't continuously have a new person rewrite the Bible every few hundred/thousand years to make it more clear and understandable to people. I'm not talking translations, but a rewrite using totally new analogies, parables, etc. based around that time's society. Not that he'd need to, but it would probably have helped.
Why does God need a book in the first place? Even leaving aside the translation in hundreds of languages problem, for most of human history literacy was extremely low, in the single digits, so vast majority of people people couldn’t read that book even if it was perfect. The omnipotent creator of the universe could easily make himself and his laws as self evident as gravity and the laws of nature yet somehow he needs humans scribes to communicate with us.
@@pansepot1490 Ya that is one I talk about a lot. Some christians have said too that it isn't an intellectual ascent holding atheists back, morerather an emotional/spiritual ascent. If that's the case though, why isn't God way more obvious than anything else? It wouldn't realistically change much under their logic, and so why not have that happen instead?

I'd never read that Numbers 5:14 insanity before. Seems an awful lot of messing around with dust and barley and such just to get the all-powerful creator of the universe to give a thumbs up or thumbs down on whether a woman is a big nasty cheater. My god, what a weird-ass book.
Weird ass book indeed. I cover that verse more in detail in my abortion video. How anyone still thinks this is a good loving god yet alone real is beyond me.

the funny thing, there are some lovely gods/religions. if only some of those ideas had taken root more, but its hard when those religions dont mandate child indoctirnation and use fear tactics. Those are powerful tools for spreading a religion.
@@Mar-dk3mp is clueless... "atheism" is not "cult". A-theism is simply the opposite of theism, meaning one disbelieves a god or gods exists as opposed to believing a god or gods exist.. That's it. I did a similar breakdown back in high school - a simpler and comparatively less thorough one, but still. Even back then, when I was religious, I found my conclusions to be succinctly summarized by Carlin's Religion is BS bit (I did not count the Ice Capades as a demerit against God or the Bible back then, even though I probably should have). Even for just the Old Testament, I think Lewis Black put it best: "People forget that the Old Testament was written by the Jews. It's not their fault, 'cuz it's not their book. It was written back when my people were wondering the desert looking for sh^t. People just do not know what Jews are good at, and what we're good at is bullsh^tting. They came up with these rules and stories in order to distract themselves from the fact that they did not have air conditioning." With that, it is not difficult for me to extend it to the New Testament. My favorite contradiction in the NT is from Galatians: "Bear one another’s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he is deluding himself. Each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason to boast with regard to himself alone, and not with regard to someone else; for each will bear his own load." (6: 2-5) Right there, it says that everyone has to bear someone else's burden, only to be almost immediately followed by saying that everyone can only bear their own burden - and the fact that it contradicts itself within just a few verses makes me smile a bit dementedly. There are other contradictions that invoke that kind of smile as well, but none of them are in that convenient little package like this one. And then there was how across pretty much all sects and denominations, about 95% of Job is ignored completely, as if they know that the book only portrays God as the most evil pr^ck ever, or how in Revelation, the only people truly spared from the suffering of the events portrayed and ultimately let into the new kingdom... are 144,000 dead Hebrews. I need to double-check when the idea of the Rapture first took hold, but it certainly came much later after the Bible was finalized, as if they knew that without it, Christianity would be viewed as nothing but an overly large dead-end death cult.
Love all this! Thanks for taking the time to write it all out. Lewis and carlin are great for this and nowadays Ricky gervaise. Love the contradictions you brought up and dont even get me started on job ha! In a fee weeks thursday videos will shift to doing one book of the bible each week and breaking it down from a secular perspective. Job will be my favorite and least favorite of these.

What, you're not going to? Then how about you STFU? So let's do this face-fo-face. Put up or shut up, b^tch. BTW, I would like to see you go into the "Book of Atheism." After all, the Bible has the most successful record of creating atheists.
If I were a Christian apologist, I would say that one verse is about sharing each other's burden (personal problems or hardship), basically help each other out. This is not contradictory with the other verse, which is saying you can be proud of your own accomplishments (like a job or personal project) or your contribution to something. If you did not contribute, then you have no reason to be boastful.
How did your mind process all those verses about killing babies/children when you were a believer? I stopped believing long before I read the bible but it's always amazed me someone reads it and concludes that it's obviously from the Supreme Being.
Its a great question. I cover it a bit in my abortion video, but theres many sides. Indoctrination is a hell of a drug. Starting from a premise of god is perfect and just can really blind you, the confirmation bias of other believers and the christian community is powerful. The game of apologetics to get normal doubting believers to feel bad or sinful for questioning, the sick excuses about gods justice and right to do so etc. It all plays a part and i'm embarrassed that I was ever so deceived.
@@MindShift-Brandon You and some religious apologists are clearly highly intelligent. It seems that intelligence is used to spin post-hoc rationalisations about beliefs whose inception was based on completely irrational claims. I have chronic depression and no matter what qualities I might have, my brain somehow always concludes that I'm worthless and a piece of shit, regardless how everyone around me perceives me. I suppose the two can be compared.
I am very sorry to hear about depression and thank you for the kind words. I suppose the two can be compared. Its just so sad to see any mind given over to false belief at such a high level.
As a deconverted xian it was easy. I ‘studied’ the Bible but just on a devotional level, looking for gods word to me. In my fairyland brain, I looked at the crap metaphorically or the usual BS of god is beyond our understanding, or he’s a just and righteous god. I just didn’t focus on it. I guess kind of in denial too.
In a review/walkthrough of the late atheist biblical scholar Dr. Hector Avalos' book 'Slavery, Abolitionism, and the Ethics of Biblical Scholarship' (which I would buy myself if it wasn't out of my destitute price range), we're introduced to a kind of hermeneutic often used by biblical apologists which Avalos calls 'representativism' - apologists will note rather unpleasant parts of the Bible, but insist it's not representative of the Bible's whole message. But how do we determine what's most representative of the Bible, and whether it even has a consistent message? A quantifying approach is one way, and I'm glad you've done it, because it can show, as clear as day what actually is representative of the Bible. If you're able to pick up books by Dr. Avalos, I hope you share your thoughts, because I'd be very interested to hear them.
Hi Brandon! A lot of interesting facts there. So much more could be said about the laws, like why isn't rape condemned in the Ten Commandments, but making graven images is a sin. Does that apply to woodcarvers and photography? And one of the many reasons I cannot accept Jesus, is the fact that Adam and Eve did not exist. Without them, there was no Original Sin to be handed down to everyone. Without Original Sin there was no need for a Savior. Therefore the very idea Christianity is based on, falls on it's face.
Thank you and oh i know. Its so frustrating to restrict myself. I could go 1000 ways with all this and make an10 hour video ha. But all great points. Thanks for your input here too!
Original sin isn’t something all Christian sects believe in, nor do the sects that believe in it necessarily believe Jesus died to atone for original sin per se.
ha, too kind! lets hope the human race gets to the point someday where we no longer feel the need to deify things. I wonder how far into the future that day is.
Once I really started to read the Bible I could easily understand that it was a man-made book about one of the “religions “ of the world. Thanks for all your research. The numbers were interesting.

Love and worship me or ill punish you? Yea youre just an abuser my guy God: THROW THIS ONE TO HELL DUE TO USING HIS FREE WILL THAT I GAVE HIM, BUT HE TOTALLY HAD A CHOICE....
The only available evidence indicates that the bible was written by humans. This means that all of the moral codes were also of human origin. The fact that religious people assert that god is self-evident, at the the same time as asserting that god is their belief, demonstrates the weakness of their claims. God cannot be both a proven fact, and an unproven belief, at the same time.
@@MindShift-Brandon No rocket science is required to reject biblical claims that were supplied without supporting evidence. The people who wrote the bible didn't even understand the natural mechanism that creates rainbows. In their time, the planets were just wandering stars...which explains the ancient Greek name for them.
Oh lord almighty. This was the funniest video you've done hands down. 😂 You really know your Bible, and oh man, it really does talk about dicks as much as it discusses the virtue of patience. Hilarious.
Hey Brandon! I have a few comments here. First, I have to point out that while I understand that this is a Christian deconstruction channel, I believe that it is worth noting that it is not the only religion that condemns homosexuality. In fact I believe that all of the "yhwh" religions share that belief, so I think that it stands that all of them fall under the same criticism and not Christianity only. Not a call out, just a comment. ❤ Also the one about the "honest measures" 😂😂 Last comment. "rushing into a marriage that you cannot leave is not very beneficial". 🔥😮 Ask me how I know. Thank you so much for the amazing work that you do here. I have only been listening to you recently but in my ear buds while I'm working so I've taken on hours of your content and I believe that it has benefitted me on my journey of deconstruction. Thank you.
Hold up wouldn't immutable mean that god wouldn't be effected by our actions and anger or pleasure in our actions would be a change in the nature of God.
A child runs from home into a forest, it either becomes wild (attacking their past) or creates society (forging a future). It's exciting to see minds explore reality with "what ifs" so it can entertain narratives. Just don't forget, eventually one must end their life wild, or domesticated. You look back on your life and realize you spent the whole thing attacking something, instead of creating something.
@@MindShift-Brandon In order to help someone, you need a set of rules and standards. This is the construct we must define to create help. Perhaps you wish to nurture the souls who have been criticized and judged by being that same advocate towards their accusers? Its all about pressure, and the best way to administer it. The problem has and will always be: "why?". Preservation of life? Because its something we all deal with? vs other problems not many deal with so we bicker on what is more valuable? Forgive me for being all over the place here. We all have webs in our mind, who has the one that can catch the most flies? Is finding value off of others a good idea? If we can't even find it by ourselves? Why even care about the flies if the only goal is to build the web?
"you spent the whole thing attacking something, instead of creating something." false dichotomy. you can attack something, defeat it, and by doing so you create a better world = a world without the bad, BAD something you defeated. And religi0n is a bad, BAD something. The brain cancer of mankind abused to scam the masses. oh, and work on your metaphors: wolves are wild and co-operative. sheep are domesticated and very dumb. Ebola is wild and brutal, dogs are domesticated and mankind's heroes. Good and bad on the wild AND on the domesticated side. Meaning that just a basic knowledge of nature ruins your metaphor.
20:10 Now I could be wrong (most of my sources are apologetics websites but I did try to double-check), but I donʼt think it says bats are not mammals. It says that bats are fowl. Except it doesnʼt say that, because the authors didnʼt write in English, it says they are עוֹף, which seems to literally translate to “has wings” (or maybe “has feathers”, which would be wrong but in a way which would be obvious to the authors; it probably doesnʼt mean that); either way it isnʼt about modern taxonomy. The King James version says they are fowl; apologist sites say that back then it also meant something closer to “winged animal” but I canʼt verify that. I can verify that the word “fowl” came from other words loosely translated as “bird” but which themselves came from words for flight. I think this is one of the worst arguments because modern understanding of biology has influenced language so much we forget other languages are different. The character of God was not saying that bats are in the clade Avialae; nobody cares except when they are taking Genesis literally in which case they have bigger problems. He was saying that they fly around. This nitpick makes more sense than the equivalent whale one only because birds are monophyletic and fish are not. Both make about as much sense as saying that “trees” have to be monophyletic and then saying that half the things people refer to as trees in modern English arenʼt; maybe language will change that way in the future but it isnʼt a mark against modern English translations of the bible that they consider both cedars and acacias to be trees.
Great video! According to Dr. Sara Wolkenfeld, Director of Education and Community Engagement for the Sefaria project, the Babylonian Talmud consists of 1,860,131 words and approximately 6,200 pages. Jews have literally been debating and reinterpreting the ins and outs of Jewish law, tradition, and scripture for thousands of years. This points to the fact that, like all religion, Judaism is simply a dynamic and evolving tradition shaped completely by human understanding and cultural contexts. The diverse perspectives reflect Judaism as a lived and interpretable folk religion, nothing more.
I'd really appreciate it if you'd consider doing a video or series of videos on the Talmud since there's a lot of really interesting material you could cover, especially on things that were considered heretical like non-belief
That was amazing. Thank you. I've been thinking that a lot of your content could be helpful to lawyers working on the lawsuits against the state of Louisiana. I think it is ludicrous to call the Ten Commandments part of Louisiana's history. What about the commandments they choose to ignore, like adultery and honoring the Sabbath and parents? So I guess this history lesson goes like this ...hey kids, these rules on the wall are what we used do, but now they just get in the way of your commerce, lust and common sense.
So i do my secular bible study series each Thursday and at the end of each episode i do a section called problematic passages and cover the worst, craziest, or most immoral verses from each book. But i do have a video coming soon on some of the weirdest verses in the bible.

What are your answers to fix what we experience here in this nation at this time? Your intelligence and knowledge of good and evil - can it be used to fix anything? I listened to the audio Bible everyday for 2 full years, and most every day 2 years before that. This was the biggest reason why I doubt the narrative of the Bible. The rules about who to kill and rape broke me. No way this is the same god that is all knowing, all loving, all giving.

The fact is they don't get their morals from the bible either, they just use it as a cherry-picked cover-all misquoted or misrepresented excuse to behave exactly how they wanted to in the first place.
agreed. that and all the objective morality/divine command theory. oh boy, it just never ends.

I’ve never understood how so many Christians can focus so much on the 10 Commandments but completely ignore the Beatitudes.
It’s quite insane. Not to mention the 10 commandments are nothing special. hitchens has a great one on that.
Oh, don't you know? Jesus's dictates were _woke,_ they were _weak,_ and real men want to have a word with that there . . . . librual Jesus.

If you are denying the existence of God now as a so called ex-Christain then that only proves that you were never a true born again Christian to begin with because when you become a true born again Christian you get confirmation so that you know the following three things beyond all doubt and they are:
1) God's very existence.
Genesis 3:16 (KJV): “Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.”
But in the bible the husband is also told to be loving and respectful to his wife in that ruling over her and NOT cruel.
Agreed...we should fix that!
@@ShannonQ says: *Agreed...we should fix that!*
I would love to fix it, but sadly I think the damage is too far done for it to be fixed and it needs to be replaced which is why in the end God will destroy this current creation and create everything new.
Great analysis. What is curious about the Bible is not just what is said but what is left unsaid.
yes indeed. or even further all that is said and at such length vs what's unsaid, that was the main point in me making this vidoe. its just so clearly manmade.

Instead it was clear he was simply a person of his own time and culture, and not a divine character with the nature of God.
yes, ive always loved that example. For a god who loved prophecy, he couldnt come up with one accurate and specific fact.
This is Christ's witness of the beginning that has parts from before Ge:1:1.
Proverb:8:22-36:
The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way,
before his works of old.
I was set up from everlasting,
from the beginning,
or ever the earth was.
When there were no depths,
I was brought forth;
when there were no fountains abounding with water.
Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
While as yet he had not made the earth,
nor the fields,
nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
When he prepared the heavens,
I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
When he established the clouds above:
when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
When he gave to the sea his decree,
that the waters should not pass his commandment:
when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
Then I was by him,
as one brought up with him:
and I was daily his delight,
rejoicing always before him;
Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth;
and my delights were with the sons of men.
Now therefore hearken unto me,
O ye children:
for blessed are they that keep my ways.
Hear instruction,
and be wise,
and refuse it not.
Blessed is the man that heareth me,
watching daily at my gates,
waiting at the posts of my doors.
For whoso findeth me findeth life,
and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul:
all they that hate me love death.
This Abraham's High Priest:
Heb:7:1-4:
For this Melchisedec,
king of Salem,
priest of the most high God,
who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings,
and blessed him;
To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all;
first being by interpretation King of righteousness,
and after that also King of Salem,
which is,
King of peace;
Without father,
without mother,
without descent,
having neither beginning of days,
nor end of life;
but made like unto the Son of God;
abideth a priest continually.
Now consider how great this man was,
unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.
Ge:14:18:
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine:
and he was the priest of the most high God.
Ge:18:1-3:
And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre:
and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
And he lift up his eyes and looked,
and,
lo,
three men stood by him:
and when he saw them,
he ran to meet them from the tent door,
and bowed himself toward the ground,
And said,
My Lord,
if now I have found favour in thy sight,
pass not away,
I pray thee,
from thy servant:

You are doing nothing to prove your faith is real but sound like a mad radical afraid his comfort box is about to be overturned and dumped on the ground.
All you have to do is prove the supernatural events claimed in the bible are real. It is that simple. Prove it with facts and evidence not bible verses.
Faith is not fact
believe is not evidence
the bible is not a self -proving document.
Thats a great way to look at it! Thanks for the addition.

I used to rage with myself to keep going. i honestly can’t imagine how painful and scary it must have been to go through the process of no longer having this belief in god. i’ve always considered myself more agnostic/spiritual, so the idea of the bible being -as you said- more or less a piece of history with a few good and bad morals, it doesn’t scare me very much, as my identity is not intertwined with said book and morals. it scares me more how long people have been supportive of this book, manipulated it, and spread it from one person to another. it scares me because i have family that believe in god, in jesus, in heaven, etc. it makes me unsure of how to behave around them, which sucks because i’ve always struggled to feel grounded around my family in one way or another. with that, i appreciate how you are not only compassionate towards non-believers, but believers too. it’s like a hand to hold on the journey of breaking this belief down, and it’s reassuring. you’ve stated before “im not better than them, they’re not better than me, im not worse than them, they’re no worse than me,” and that really helps to keep are they forefront of my mind when i meet a believer; especially when i remember that it is only partially their fault for believing so firmly. your compassion is not false, or condescending either, which is also helpful. they’ve truly been lied to and misled. thank you for sharing your time, and your story! much love!
I love data science, mathematics, baysean statistics, & computational corpus linguistics.
I like the way you present your views without bashing, because in the end, all any of us really want is the truth, facts, as to why we're here, what's going on....😎🤔🙂
Indeed. and thank you for the kind words!
I’ve published a few studies using computational text analysis and I’ve never considered conducting an analysis on Bible text. This is inspiring. It would be interesting to extract more objective insights from the actual text, instead of other people’s interpretations.
Right?! I wish i had the resources to dig more
“Not to commit fraud in measuring…”
And then THAT LOOK 😂😂😂
Another excellent video! Thanks for compiling this. So much useful material that was thoughtfully presented.
Glad to hear. Thanks, Damian!
I very much appreciate this approach to analyzing the Bible. I love numbers and data, and I think many of the points become pretty obvious given the numbers.
I am the same way, thanks so much for watching.
Agreed. At least the OT punishment was finite.
This was such a unique video I really enjoyed it
Thanks for watching!
Dude, in really love your videos. Your video topics and execution have a style that’s distinctly yours, and you have a great way to explaining things that makes it easy to understand (though sometimes it can get a little hard to follow as you do tend to talk quickly with little breaks between phrases).
Keep up the great work!
Love that. Thanks so much!
If you have more to say on this subject, do a part 2 video. I'll watch it. I bet others would, too.
Your editing is mesmerizing. 3:23 especially.
Thats nice to hear. Sometimes i think its too many jump-cuts but id rather be efficient
@@MindShift-Brandon it seems random, but sometimes I see a purpose in it. I can't explain it. They blend in well.
Outstanding video. So much here.
Thanks Jenna. I had to pull back. This one could have been an easy 3 hours, ha.
Or and hear me out. What if he wrote it perfectly the first time and never confused everyones languages so we could all perfectly know him. Lol!
@@Mar-dk3mpWell why are you spending your time here among the godless? Honestly if you watched his vids and comments you’d see that he is open to challenges and debates….go ahead your turn request a debate.
That would be great. Make more relevant, but where would all the apologists go trying to update 2000-2500+ irrelevant book? A new book would allow them to spruce up the image of god so modern xians wouldn’t have to use so much makeup. Plus it’d give them a chance to update their cosmology, science 🧐🙄, medicine, morals, maybe reduce the sex and violence some. I say, great idea.
I am enjoying your videos. Thank you.

THANK YOU FOR THE RESOURCES, also could you do a video where it’s like a super long video, and it’s about every error and contradiction. At least 200, because that would be really nice to have. Anyway, great vids as always.

24:31 Its fucked up that God wouldnt condemn money. What "good" has it brought humanity?
Nothing has caused more greif, or gotten in the way of progress more than money. Either a lack of, or someones over abundance of.
My turn to be devils advocate. I think hes got a good handful of verses condemning greed and envy if money. Ha but still talking about money in general for 20% of your words while missing so many opportunities to get other knowledge or rules out is ridiculous. And feel free to comment all you want. Heading out for now but ill get to them all eventually. Nice having you here.

Appreciate that! Glad to here people appreciate the work.
I love a line i heard from one academic that said and mormon and a catholic have more in common than most early sects of Christianity with each other.
Please, run for public office. The people need to hear your kind message. Thanks.

Lol. Thanks man!!
Yahweh really was a mean little god in the grand scheme of all the other gods people had to choose from back then.
the funny thing, there are some lovely gods/religions. if only some of those ideas had taken root more, but its hard when those religions dont mandate child indoctirnation and use fear tactics. Those are powerful tools for spreading a religion.
@@Mar-dk3mp is clueless... "atheism" is not "cult". A-theism is simply the opposite of theism, meaning one disbelieves a god or gods exists as opposed to believing a god or gods exist.. That's it. I'd bet anything that you don't believe in 99% of the gods other than the one you do believe in. That makes YOU an atheist in regards to all those other gods.
Get it now?
I did a similar breakdown back in high school - a simpler and comparatively less thorough one, but still. Even back then, when I was religious, I found my conclusions to be succinctly summarized by Carlin's Religion is BS bit (I did not count the Ice Capades as a demerit against God or the Bible back then, even though I probably should have).
Even for just the Old Testament, I think Lewis Black put it best:
"People forget that the Old Testament was written by the Jews. It's not their fault, 'cuz it's not their book. It was written back when my people were wondering the desert looking for sh^t. People just do not know what Jews are good at, and what we're good at is bullsh^tting. They came up with these rules and stories in order to distract themselves from the fact that they did not have air conditioning."
With that, it is not difficult for me to extend it to the New Testament. My favorite contradiction in the NT is from Galatians:
"Bear one another’s burdens, and so you will fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he is deluding himself. Each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason to boast with regard to himself alone, and not with regard to someone else; for each will bear his own load." (6: 2-5)
Right there, it says that everyone has to bear someone else's burden, only to be almost immediately followed by saying that everyone can only bear their own burden - and the fact that it contradicts itself within just a few verses makes me smile a bit dementedly.
@@MindShift-Brandon I’m really looking forward to this!
George Carlin….the only preacher America ever needed.
@@Mar-dk3mp Oh, wow, someone who always runs away when challenged on their points in even the most milquetoast way and yet is obsessed with showing their cowardice at every opportunity... is calling anyone and everyone else a coward and obsessive.
You want a debate? Alright. What time and place? If you want a knowledgeable Christian, well, what about yourself? You always act like you know more than an atheist, so how about you put up?
Thank you for making this. Let's link this in the comments of vids touting God's objective morality.
My pleasure! Thanks for being here
Hey, Brandon! I like how you take Bible stuff down. Please, tell us how you would respond to Classical Theism stuff too.
You are creazy good with these
Thanks so much!
@@aagereinertjakobsen4832 Don't give up or give in to the depression.
Lobe that rec! Thanks
you could make merch with "... but I digress" :D
Ha!! Love that. Now i just need a few more slogans
Damn. I think this is your best video.
Oh wow. Thank you. Its actually one of my favorites too.
Incredibly insightful, well thought out and presented, content! If the human race ever decides to deify you I'll be first in line to worship!
ha, too kind! lets hope the human race gets to the point someday where we no longer feel the need to deify things. I wonder how far into the future that day is.
Nailing it again!!!

Humans: ok but what happens if we choose not to cuz we have
A. Never even met you before
B. Cant meet you due to the sin YOU forced on us
C. Condemn us calling us vile and pathetic for just being born...?
God: THEN ETERNAL DAMNATION FOR YOU, I WILL ENSURE YOU SUFFER FOR ALL ETERNITY IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO WORSHIP AND OBEY ME

Well said
Just discovered your channel. Absolutely love it! Great video.
hey thank you! welcome to the family. Glad to have you here.
They live by the machinations of cavemen.
Ahh well said!
You really know your Bible, and oh man, it really does talk about dicks as much as it discusses the virtue of patience. Hilarious.
Lol! Glad you enjoyed.
Also the one about the "honest measures" 😂😂
Last comment. "rushing into a marriage that you cannot leave is not very beneficial". 🔥😮
Ask me how I know.
Fantastic.
Thank you much
A child runs from home into a forest, it either becomes wild (attacking their past) or creates society (forging a future). It's exciting to see minds explore reality with "what ifs" so it can entertain narratives. Just don't forget, eventually one must end their life wild, or domesticated. You look back on your life and realize you spent the whole thing attacking something, instead of creating something.
Beautiful perspective and something important to keep in mind. But in this case i feel what im running toward/creating is this channel to help others.
"you spent the whole thing attacking something, instead of creating something."
false dichotomy.
you can attack something, defeat it, and by doing so you create a better world = a world without the bad, BAD something you defeated.
Don't forget the time the Benjaminites kidnapped those women from other tribes of Israel. So they broke that law too.
Sounds like systematic theology for sceptics. Havnt herd this before.
Don’t eat winged insects? Hmmmm…didn’t John live off locusts and honey in the wilderness? Another contradiction, they just go on and on!
11:32 - this had me laughing painfully hard... "IS JESUS CUT?" no, he got nailed"
Lol! Thanks for the levity
Interesting overview.
Thank you for watching.
Could you touch on the absolutely insane things in the bible like 1 Samuel 18:27
So i do my secular bible study series each Thursday and at the end of each episode i do a section called problematic passages and cover the worst, craziest, or most immoral verses from each book. But i do have a video coming soon on some of the weirdest verses in the bible.
@@MindShift-Brandon thank you and I look forward to it
I have watched many, many of your videos and if there are two things I know it is
1) that you are intelligent
2) you know right from wrong
Now if you take your knowledge and judgement and turn it to what is going on in the United States -- what would you do? How do we fix the issues of drugs and alcohol? How do we fix the issues of poverty? How do we fix the issues of child abuse? How do we fix the issues gang formation and violence? What are your answers to fix what we experience here in this nation at this time? Your intelligence and knowledge of good and evil - can it be used to fix anything? Because, as mother, I am tired of living in fear and sorrow.
When you say you can come up with a "better" law, what moral standard are you using to determine what is morally better or worse?
I listened to the audio Bible everyday for 2 full years, and most every day 2 years before that. This was the biggest reason why I doubt the narrative of the Bible. The rules about who to kill and rape broke me. No way this is the same god that is all knowing, all loving, all giving.
