Kościuszko is a Polish-American hero. General Kościuszko took part in the fight for US independence. He built West Point. Between 1778 and 1780, the Polish engineer and military hero Tadeusz Kościuszko oversaw the construction of the garrison defenses. He has his own monuments in the USA and a parade in his name is organized in New York. Kościuszko had a strong emotional connection with the black community in the USA. In his will, he donated his American wealth to the needs of the black population. His will was never fulfilled.

Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a Polish military engineer who played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War, held progressive views for his time regarding black slaves. He believed in the abolition of slavery and saw it as a moral and human rights issue. Deeply affected by the plight of African slaves, he made a poignant effort to address this injustice through his will.
Kosciuszko was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson, whom he admired for his Enlightenment ideals. However, he was concerned about the contradiction between Jefferson’s proclaimed ideals of liberty and his ownership of slaves. In an attempt to reconcile these contradictions and promote the cause of abolition, Kosciuszko wrote a will in 1798 where he left his American estate to Jefferson. The specific instruction was to use the funds to purchase and free slaves, including providing them with education and land to support their independence.
This bequest illustrates Kosciuszko’s commitment to not just fighting for freedom in a general sense, but ensuring it reached those who were denied it most starkly. Unfortunately, Jefferson never executed the terms of Kosciuszko’s will, and the intended funds were never used to free and establish the slaves in a self-sufficient life. This episode reflects the complexities and limitations of advocacy for abolition during that period, as well as the personal contradictions of figures like Jefferson. Kosciuszko’s legacy, therefore, remains as a poignant reminder of the early efforts to challenge the institution of slavery in the nascent United States.
