“[Oh] Watching someone eating crumpets with delicious butter on it is really painful.” - Michael Brian Huttlestone, Lover of Butter and Quirky Cardigans, 2021.
Agreed. They often compare what I'd consider premium against something I'd consider a preposterous novelty. I'd rather see the most popular options in the local supermarket compared to the cheapest and most expensive versions that supermarket stocks. For instance, compare Stockwell tomato ketchup (8p/100g) to Heinz (48p/100g) and to Dr Wills (116p/100g). However, don't taste them individually in a way nobody ever uses the product. Instead, start with them over a hotdog as seen with the crumpets here.
Definitely agree! If they want to keep the super high quality premium, make them taste three levels of product: an own brand, a branded, and the "premium" and they have to put them in order. It is something they have kinda done before, I know. As much as I enjoy pretty much all of their videos, comparing a brand I would never go for (which Jamie kinda alludes to with the butter) to a premium product doesn't give me a good sense of value.
One thing that seems off as well is the fact they tell them which is the premium one in the cooked dish, why? Why not let them try and find out themselves, by knowing they're already biased.
Oh absolutely, I’m about to go to uni from a very very foody family and it’s going to be interesting having to massively shift my budget. I know that often the product in a named brand packet and in an own brand packet are actually exactly the same but that because of the way I’ve been brought up, I’d maybe turn my nose up at the own brand products which is a really bad attitude to have. I would love a video or two talking about it.
Idea for a battle theme: Hypoallergenic dinner. You can't use ingredients that are also common food allergies (dairy, nuts, gluten, soy, etc.) Could work as a Pass It On as well.
I had really bad gut health issues until I started buying more "premium" type foods, especially when it came to meat products (buying local, organic or humanely raised, without antibiotics or added chemicals, grass-fed and free-range) eggs included, and various products with fewer or no preservatives and binders (ie guar gum) so I do spend more money on those products now and have had much better gut health as a result. Depending on your local area and what is available, and obviously your income, the best you can do is always a balance between what you value and how you can fit it into your budget. When my health got significantly better, I had to make the difficult adjustment of spending more money of our family budget on higher quality products because when I didn't my health was affected terribly. And doing your research to get the best information about your products is helpful, and then you join the group of people who are speaking with their money by conveying to the producer that they want more products like this, and hopefully over time the price might balance out so more people can have access to the premium products.
I really like how when they do these they don’t compare premium products with bottom of the barrel products and instead compare to a good quality “normal” product
Coke would be the middle example there surely? Then something like Fentimans (or an even more expensive product that I can't find in supermarkets) as the premium.

I started this video seating on my floor, to put on my shoes. The episode was so good that I stayed on the floor until it was done. Now, I just have to figure out how to get up.
Barry is so special. Jay may have gottem this time about, and I can 100% see all of these boys enjoying a tasting menu now and again, but with Barry... I'm somehow certain any excuse of a get together for tasting will do, so long as it's fairly often and the foods are premium. Tasting menus, popup establishments, wine tastings and tours and the like. He lives for this stuff and you can see the joy in his eyes and hear the love in his words and descriptions with each taste, and with each little lesson those tastes bring along. That boy was born to nosh.
"I don't mind what we do as long as I get to do the eating" I feel like there are ways to make Mike regret this statement.... another poker face challenge? lol
As someone in the USA, I appreciate that you discussed what contributes to the differences - almost didn't click to watch because I though, "all that UK food I can't even get, why bother?", but you gave me things to look for so I can make better choices with our brands.
Hey Mike! for these kinds of challenges, it should be "challenge the winner". Since Barry lost, the next Blind Taste should be you and Jamie. The winner gets to stay and the loser loses his spot to the other challenger. Gives you a legit reason to join in on the fun and gives you guys motivation to win other than bragging rights.
I was only introduced to sortedfood a week ago by a friend and have been binge watching ever since and telling everyone I know about it. Basically I'm loving it 😍
Don't let them know which is which in the second dish! I imagine its very easy, after hearing that B is the premium product, to taste dish B is being more nuanced. Let the tasters taste both before deciding which is premium, or find another way where they don't know which is which when they're tasting it in context!
What I appreciate most about these video - and the part that is different - is how the foods are compared when actually prepared. That helps put the cost/value of these foods in perspective (like don't buy fancy butter if you aren't going to highlight it).
I'd like to see you take some of the cheaper, less desirable products and use them in recipes to their best advantage for those who have a tight budget.
Fine ground flour and sugar shortbread would have been an excellent option for comparing the butters at full temp. Interestingly so would have same the cocoanut. I think the thing about sausage is specifically you want to stay away from homogenized filling, the flavors should come in waves and let your mouth mix and mash. There was a local butcher to me who would slide slivers of various roasted peppers into each link many years ago and it was heaven to have that random mix of flavor.
I liked that they included the exact super market and brand in this, as when they say 'supermarket brand' in other videos it could refer to a variety of qualities of products
Because skill wise he is actually the worst of the whole normy trio, and falling for pretentious stuff is just further evidence that he doesn't actually know what's good.

One of my favourite comparison episodes, normal stuff that most people use. More of this!
When the boys get excited about the food or are enjoying it, look at Ben's proud face light up I love it ✨
Edit: 06:45 look at him 😁
thanks for the timestamp :D
I started this video seating on my floor, to put on my shoes. The episode was so good that I stayed on the floor until it was done. Now, I just have to figure out how to get up.
Streeeeeetch!
Between Sorted amazing recipes and all the different lockdowns I totally think I’ve at least gained the Sorted15.
Eating and Beating...Barry Taylor. The Spaff has his priorities...SORTED.
That boy was born to nosh.
you should do a chef vs normal but the normal can use premium ingredients and the chef can only use the cheap ones!!
I’m definitely shocked over the coconut milk. That was a great piece of info.
"I don't mind what we do as long as I get to do the eating"
I feel like there are ways to make Mike regret this statement.... another poker face challenge? lol
As someone in the USA, I appreciate that you discussed what contributes to the differences - almost didn't click to watch because I though, "all that UK food I can't even get, why bother?", but you gave me things to look for so I can make better choices with our brands.
Hope James comes back soon!
I wanted to ask where he was but I wasn't wanting to be repetitious in case it had been asked multiple times.
Do a top 5 out of the box uses for Yogurt! I have used it minimally in the kitchen and would love some ideas 😊
Jamie doing an Ebbersism. Saying how much he enjoys eating and beating Barry .... 🤭
Hey Mike! for these kinds of challenges, it should be "challenge the winner". Since Barry lost, the next Blind Taste should be you and Jamie. The winner gets to stay and the loser loses his spot to the other challenger. Gives you a legit reason to join in on the fun and gives you guys motivation to win other than bragging rights.
"Would you like to try these sausages in action?" I have been fantasizing about hearing Mike say that to me for *years* !
Great episode, literally salivated at every dish . Keep up the good work in the studio!
What I got out of the coconut milk section was “there’s a coconut soup somewhere in the packs app”, but I can’t find it. Sad now...
You learn a lot from these comparison videos. Thanks again guys.
Who knew that a normal would have a hidden chef's palate.
I was only introduced to sortedfood a week ago by a friend and have been binge watching ever since and telling everyone I know about it. Basically I'm loving it 😍
“tasty saus” “i know my saus” thanks Jamie
LOLLL
Love Jamie's glasses over his blindfold is still hilarious. PS Loving Mike's haircut!
When even a premium sosige is cheaper than a bar of chocolate.
That is absolutely how sausage should be spelled.
@@JanPospisilArt So spell it that way u silly sosige.
@@Nemz1987 😂.. I didn't even know, what you meant
I liked that they included the exact super market and brand in this, as when they say 'supermarket brand' in other videos it could refer to a variety of qualities of products
Ah yes, when someone says "Himalayan", my thought turns to Somerset.
😂😂😂😂
I love the fresh vs frozen vs canned idea. Also condiments would be interesting too. Ta!
Yes! I'd especially like to see flash frozen things vs fresh. See if frozen is better in any cases.
Bit disappointed they didn’t make pina colada’s for the coconut milk
Usually piña coladas use coco lopez, not coconut milk
That's coconut cream, not milk. Coconut cream is sweet
My third favorite series of sorted food! (You just have sooo many series)
"Two of our most normal home cooks"..... How has pretentious Barry got in there?????!!!! lol
Because skill wise he is actually the worst of the whole normy trio, and falling for pretentious stuff is just further evidence that he doesn't actually know what's good.
@@chazz30000 True, we can take the cloud egg as an example of that!!!!!
I love these kinds of videos from you guys. Stay well!
I’d love to see you guys do this with drinks, like sodas or maybe teas/coffees.
I never realized crumpets could trigger my Trypophobia but they most definitely can.
I learn so much from these videos! Totally will look for more coconut content the next time I’m in the store.
Also love the editing of the videos with the captions, explanations, and emojis.
Jamie: “B has that slightly more luxurious “yeah” feel”.....
Me: *hears Ariana Grande singing “yeah” over and over*
Yuh
Ultimate quiche battle!!!!!!
What does Mike and the buttered crumpet have in common?
Both looked delicious in this video... 😏
Greeting from Germany!!
I love the premium ingredients series!
Coconut milk! Aldi's, ASDAs, and Sainsbury's own brands are all 75-76% Coconut Extract - the same as the expensive brand you mentioned. Aldi's one only costs 75p, so cheaper than the KTC cheap brand you mentioned :) Hope that helps someone (I use it to make dairy-free chocolate mousse :D)
Mike said "I don't care what we do, as long as I'm doing the eating" we need another strange/spicy engredient now!
Cheese!!!
@@annemagee1182 omg, yes! I almost forgot that Mike hates cheese! I mean, unless they get the special Christmas cheese that he inexplicably loved xD
@@tore650 Please get the cheese calendar ashens did with nerdcubed. Mike would probably like it.
@@nat3007 oh Lord that would've been great xD
Mike, I've been seeing that sweater in a lot of the recent videos. I bet it is super warm and cozy!
I have the same sweater that Mike is wearing, we are now sweater buddies!
That’s a cardigan. Not a sweater.
What is the brand? I want one.
@@ablbelle8953 I got mine from Old Navy, I'm not sure if they have those in jolly old England.
@@shannmorse3892 a cardigan is just a sweater with attitude
I'd love to see something involving copious amounts of instant noodles. Comparisons, challenges, whatever works. There are soooooo many interesting varieties out there!
Great idea!
