- These 14 hand tools are what I personally use and have used for over 20 years as a carpenter. These are 100% my opinion , but when they work, they work! I hope this video gets you moving in the right direction.

I love how the video is short and in point. No abundant unnecessary things to make a 3:49 minute video into a +17 min.
I wish all videos were like that. straight to the point, no unnecessary details. Thanks!
I do my best to create content that doesn't waste time. Thanks for the comment.
This is a great video with the perfect tool list. I just retired this past year after 44 years in carpentry, and I've carried your exact list of tools in my nail bags for at least the last 40 years. I prefer an Estwing hammer too, and I don't have elbow or shoulder problems, and for many years, we drove all the nails in a house or barn with our Estwing hammers not nail guns or high dollar titanium hammers.
Thanks for sharing Robert!
that estwing is a framing hammer. mine is >40 years old and i've never framed a house. mostly i like the
gentler curve on the nail puller.
This guy is the bomb. I have all of these tools- but then again, I have probably a hundred or more accumulated over the years and most recently a huge construction/renovation project; I feel like I’m always looking for the right tool for something but can’t ever find it! I realize this is more of an organizational/personal problem, but the point is it is so nice to have this “quick guide” to pick which ones to keep handy in my tool belt/bag. I happen to agree, these are the ones I always end up needing the most. This channel is definitely worth subscribing to and following- I love the way he explains things for some reason. It’s simple but not mind-numbingly so, and it doesn’t feel like I just wasted 15 or more minutes of my life trying to find one point or tip. It bugs the crap out of me when people in videos repeat themselves over and over and/or take forever to get to what the title of the video implies they will be demonstrating or talking about. Maybe those are preferable/helpful for some folks, but for someone with an existing working knowledge of general woodworking/tools and just needs tips or clarification here and there, this guy is where it’s at! Thanks so much!
I'm exactly like this. I have hundreds of tools and never seemed to have the right one. I went through and put all my basic tools in one box and the ones I use most in with it and I no longer find myself searching for that one tool I think I need
I am trying to learn basic carpentry, thanks for making such good videos ,they are helpful and informative .
James it is my pleasure! Be sure to ask questions if you need to. I'm here to help.
How are u with carpentry after a year ago
@@user-qd9jn5od7v
still plodding through the basics,
@@jamescannon7299 how are you doing after 2 years?
@@jamescannon7299 been 4 years now. You must be a pro now. How's work? Getting paid well, I bet. I wish I was you with 4 years of experience. I'm only just thinking of learning carpentry. Prolly this month I'll begin taking the course ☹️
Love the ease with which you present yourself. it is truly "easy listening".Also It is obvious you know your stuff as you have no dead spots, and you are very informative about many trade skills.
Thank you for such an amazing and helpful video, it solved a very basic problem for me as to which tools I should own first to begin as DIY wood worker.
I am truly grateful for your comment. Let me know if I can help in any other way.
@@TrainingHandsAcademy Thank you for the reply. I want to build a table top out of solid wood, I tried to make one but due to inexperience I picked pine wood which was not seasoned and ended up finding a warped board. Since then I am scared to build another solid wood board. My question is if I build it again with seasoned wood and do kerfing on back side, will it prevent the cupping and warping I experienced. Regards
Yes, getting wood that is dry is very important. Wide boards like to move around, so make sure to attach it to the base frame in all four corners (maybe more I don't know the size of your top). But the most important piece is to drill elongated holes (slots) in the base frame so that the screws that hold the top down can move in these slots as the top expands and contracts. Typically, wood expands the most across the grain and not as much in length, so drill the slots in the direction of the most movement (cross grain). I hope that makes sense. You can always email me to talk further. josh@traininghandsacademy.com
@@TrainingHandsAcademy Thank for your kind explanation. I will surely email you for your advices. Regards.
I'd love a video about some terms that are used, like what is a reveal, a return, a bead, etc. I watch so many videos that use the terms and sometimes I'm confused about exactly what it is referring to. thanks!!
I most defiantly will make that video for you. Thank you for commenting!!
Thank you. I am a beginner.

Amazing video, very helpful
Starting in a week's time and they gave me a bunch of tools, already own better versions of most of them but they gave me a pack of screwdrivers. I don't wanna be messing round trying to find the right size so I've got myself a wera screwdriver with built in storage. By far the nicest tool I own and can see it being a tool that will last me. More than happy to have paid the £40 for such a tool
my oh my you do have the perfect Hammer just like the one I used for 40 years on the jobs and still use it these days ... unless you plan to work on a construction site in Michigan ! They BANNED the use of straight claw hammers due to too many getting hurt using them ! A Tajima fine line caulk line is best for a sweetly snapped line
What!? They banned them? That's crazy!
@@TrainingHandsAcademy and that happened around 15 years ago ... apparently too many men were getting hurt on the rebound of a hammer swing !
40years😮😮😮
@@J-RalsConstructionDesigns YES ! do you want a color photo of my hammer !
Kindly upload the video of cordless drill machine which type is better for all works.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Will complete my tools with the small pry bar you recommend :)

Okay got it. Now how about power tools to have?
All that and more here. www.skool.com/traininghandsacademy/about
What brand are those black tools boxes on your right.
Husky
I am a Learner.
What are other tools that I can use to build house hold goods like Chairs?
A spokeshave is a common tool used to make chairs
Will this be good for an apprentice carpenter? I have orientation tomorrow for school. Going back to the trade after five years off.
Yes, absolutely
Where's the hand saws.... Or do you use mainly power tools?
This video was just on the tools in my pouch....
I want to start learning carpentry after watching this video. Can u guide from where i start. I am presently at zero level no ide about tools
I would recommend starting with watching all my videos as I cover the basic uses for the majority of the tools used in carpentry and woodworking. Then, start finding other knowledge through books/videos, and I have book recommendations on my website. You can also reach out to me via email, IG, or here on YT with your questions that you can't get answered elsewhere. Hope that helps.
Maybe also somes files to smoothen edges of woods.

What belt do you have? I’ve been looking for a set of bags that includes a pouch specifically for my speed square.
Unfortunately Tyler they don't sell my bags anymore. :(
Training Hands Academy That stinks! Well anyways, thanks for your videos!
Thanks for the list.
You are welcome! Thank YOU for the comment. Let me know if you need anything else.
What kind of tool box is good for beginners
I don't really have any recommendations... it all depends on your specific needs.
Why is there no plumb bob in your tool kit?
Thank you.
What power tools do I need as a beginner
What are you looking to do?
Good content
Only have half of what u've list down... Need to find some more
Nice video
Thank you.
Does a cat paw count also?
Sure!
Helpful!
Thank you 🙏🏻
You also do carpenter job ?
I recommend not getting into masculine activities. Men and women are different. Men were born to protect and provide for their families, therefore they need to learn the skills to pay the bills. Women were born to bear children, keep the house, care for children while husband is busy making a living.
Also, stay away from masculine activities because they will make you masculine. You don't want that to happen because men are attracted to the softness of feminine women. This is a cold, hard fact. You don't have time to be a wife and mother and also get into a trade. One will conflict with the other. Men do these things naturally (which is why it's men who developed the carpentry trade). Women do not do these things naturally. Don't listen to what the modern world is telling you. Instead of watching these videos, I recommend watching biblical womanhood videos. Those women are the most feminine and serene women I've ever seen.
How much did these cost you?
Not sure Joash... never added them all up. Maybe $150-$200.
You can start out by buying most of your tools at garage sales or auctions that sell tools maybe even your local swap meet on social media sites like facebook where there are groups that sell or trade things from cars and motorcycles to yard tools and construction tools
What kinda bag you have
I've had that bag for over 15 years... its made by Alta Industries but I don't think they sell them anymore.
And now hand saw sir?
What happened to the tape measure video? :/
Took it down awhile back... you have a good memory.
@@TrainingHandsAcademy Nah, it was just mentioned in this video and the link is in the description lol
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you
Anybody else doing this cuz of school
Loser
Hahahaha yes
You need a tool belt to put those tools in.
You missed the Hand Saw
Can't really put that in my tool belt. Do you have one that does?
So at the time of the video you were 40 years old ??
Maybe? Do I look 40? 😬
You forgot the catclaw :)
That is a nice one for sure!
@@TrainingHandsAcademy lol figured i would add that one in there for ya lol ever since i started using one its a must have in my kit :)
