  • A book by book chapter by chapter verse by verse study of the Old Testament book of Isaiah.
We closed chapter 43 with some harsh judgements promised by God, but judgment was not God’s final word to His people.
This new word would be good news in contrast to what had immediately preceded. In chapter 44 Isaiah reminds the people once again not to be afraid, and that He would be pouring out the Spirit of God on His people, (Isaiah 44:1-8,)
then another satire on the stupidity of idols, (Isaiah 44:9-20)
and the identification of Cyrus. The man God would use to free His people, and a reminder of things we need to remember about God and His love and grace. (Isaiah 44:21-28)
In the first eight verses we have the promise of the spirit.
It was God who formed Israel into a nation, and He would be the only one to help her. Therefore His tells His servant that they should not fear even though Israel had fallen far short of God's desires for her. He keeps repeating this for them, and I believe for us today, “Fear Not.” This reminds us that God is still active in and responsible for creation. He didn’t just create Adam and Eve and then let the whole thing go.
Jesurun means upright or upright one. It is used here as a contrast to the name Jacob. It is a symbolic name for Israel describing her ideal character. Even though Israel had stumbled badly, she was still upright because God had held her up.
"Jacob" (deceiver) may represent what Israel was in the past and "Jeshurun" (upright) is what she would be in the future.
