It's still playable in its original form, completely legally. The game is hosted on the Wayback Machine by the creators themselves (just search for it). There are a couple of versions, so go with the one that's in a downloadable zip for the DOS platform. Then, get the ScummVM application - it's available on both PC and Android (Mac/iPhone users, I'm not sure but it should be available on those platforms as well). Open the game on the ScummVM application and enjoy!
+EscanorTheBrave there was 4 I thought there was only 3. wish there where 100s really. every one I played where some of the best and most fun. play grim fandango too
It's not... Ron Gilbert stated that he still has his own idea about the secret & that for him, MI 3 and beyond wouldn't be where he'd continue the story if he ever had the rights to Monkey Island.
damn right, I should know...I grew up in that era. the sierra games were very good too though...sure you could die but the jokes, puzzles and stories were just as exciting...especially space quest IMO.
The art files were saved as, ".brush." "Guy" was the title of the file. So the full file name was, guy.brush. Threepwood was taken from a P. G. Wodehouse character called Galahad Threepwood.
It's definitely both one of the funniest and one of the best games ever made. Back in the day it was the funniest and the best. You had to be alive back then I guess to understand it.
In the very first game they use the word secret once. "LeChuck's secret lair is on Monkey Island, everyone knows that.. don't ask me how".. I am pretty sure this was meant to be the secret from the title. Ron just likes the speculations ;)
don't judge them by their failings...judge them by their success: they made the Jurassic park game, the wolf among us, The Waking Dead (one of the most successful story based games of this generation, it won over 100 awards), they helped make the Special Edition of Monkey Island 1 and 2. i think they also did some of the Sam n Max games and Back to the Future story based game and Game of Thrones game as well. oh yeah and unlike some companies Telltale had the decency to actually find a way to finish TWD even though they went under before it was finished.
The tool was called deluxe paint, and it would allow you to save small "chunks" of image that you could stamp down. The chunks were called "brushes", and were saved with the file extension "brush", and early on while he didn't actually have a name, they were saving it as "guy.brush"
the most annoying puzzle is that "if this is two, and this is five, what's this?" even on the commentary they said it's a cruel puzzle. i have to breakout a paper and hours to solve that
I don't think it's the absolute funniest game ever made. That spot is probably taken already by some game that was likely not even meant to be funny. But the original three Monkey Island games are among the cheekiest around. Particularly the 3rd.
I love the Monkey Island games but I have to say that there were funny games before this. The text only games didn't have much else some of the time. Wishbringer was pretty danged funny.
I first discovered adventure games in the form of Space Quest (the Sierra games) because my older brothers had them and I grew up watching them play them...loved them. but I became obsessed with retro adventure games. a friend of mine showed me the original Monkey island 1 n 2 when I was around 7 or 8...maybe 9. I borrowed them and I can't remember if I ever gave them back LOL...kind of feel bad about that. I just got so into them I never remembered to return them. my friend didn't seem to mind though. later on I got the whole Space Quest collection as well as my own copy of the monkey island games (so maybe we did return them, can't remember). I also got the later Monkey island games when they came out and the special editions of 1 n 2 eventually. I respect both Sierra and Lucasarts...they both have some truly great games. it's true that u can die in Sierra games but sometimes those difficult puzzles make it more exciting...and they have re-made those games just as much as they have the Monkey island ones
I fail to see what was so funny about it. I admit the game has charm, but it's not really funny. Maybe some chuckles, but certainly no lol moments. I like it, but to hear people call this the greatest game ever? How? It's not bad, but that's because it isn't much of anything. The game is a mere distration at best. Just because it's a cartoonish over the top story doesn't make it witty or smart, or good. Maybe the sequels add to the story and characters and that's why people love this one through those lens, but as a stand alone it really isn't special.

The Secret Of Monkey Island is still one of the very best games of all time.
And the secret is actually revealed in the sequel.
EscanorTheBrave Which sequel? Part two?

Part 4.
EscanorTheBrave cool cool... time to replay the series I guess

The first three Monkey Island games and Broken Sword one and two are just the best adventure games from the 90's.

I don't know if you guys remember Destroy All Humans 2, but that game was hilarious. Especially the pedestrian's dialogue.

DON'T NEED TO QUESTION THAT...

This and Sam and Max! The epitome of funny when it comes to point-and-click games!
Portal 2 hands down, every line of dialogue was just perfect
This game sparks joy
How appropriate! You fight like a cow!

The Curse of Monkey island (3rd) is the funniest game ever. Im so angry they never made it available in steam.
Hello, here is a guy from the future!
It's now available on Steam!
Monkey Island is a really funny game (series) but the Banjo-Kazooie and Mario & Luigi games can easily give it a run for its money.
But you can never beat the classics
loved this game as a kid still love it
I'm rubber you are glue!
Lol I remember my step dad putting me on to this game when I was young lol I was so addicted to it stayed on the computer playing it all the time
Do any of you remember the wheel? Dial A Pirate Code Wheel?
The grog puzzle is actually time based! go figure.
which can get a bit frustrating if you didn't realise initially.
It really doesnt help new fans saying something is the best of anything.
Expectations will never be met.
no need to question that...
the stick of truth and deadpool are the funniest games I've ever played.

I remember this game!! You can call the devs in the game with a hidde phone or something
No you can't, that is MI2. Not to mention it is a gag, not actual a real call.
Yes

i played a lot of this and full throttle
The monkey island games are also on ios. I really love all of them.
i had this game when i was a kid
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
the curse of monkey island is funnier I think.
that game IS my childhood
Such a difficult game
The Monkey Island is a classic game. It is just quirky.

Chex Quest was the shit.
the good old days with no console wars
What? This was smack in the middle of the Sega Nintendo console war...
It was actually smack in the middle of the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga 500 Home computer war long before those consoles ever existed.

I'd say not even close.

Borderlands 2 is the funniest game ever. SHOOT ME IN THE FACE!
+sassafrass02 It's really niche, juvenile humor. Most adults aren't going to get a kick out of it.
