Invented? What am I missing here? According to research on the interwebs, the Greeks used hula hoops as a form of exercise... This lady can be credited for receiving the first ever Hula Hoop in America as a gift. Yes, she didn't trademark and create a business out of it, but she didn't invent it. Or did I just not get the video?
Hi there! This woman does NOT claim that she invented the hoop, however, the name that even you yourself are now using to refer to this object, "Hula hoop", is the direct result of her work/input, whatever you want to call it. The fact that she got a settlement on the dispute proves she had a point and a contribution. Aside from the ownership/invention issue, hats off to the way she and her husband treated the whole situation - this should be the biggest takeaway from this film.
I enjoyed this film making; nice touches with the circle shapes in opening and the slicing of the orange. Fantastic original music scored for this! I wish the musicians had been credited at the end… a bit of irony there. What’s cool is I now play golf with one of her sons here in Indonesia! Joan rocks it on camera!
You can't just take something to the US from another country and say you 'invented' it. She may have named it...but it sounds like it had already been invented and was already in popular use in Australia when she got her mum to send it over to her. Perhaps the video would have been better if they actually found out who invented it. The title is very misleading.. and in fact a downright lie.
The title was misleading. You're right. But they changed it...I guess they figured out that the film never claimed she invented it. I'm a hula-hooper and I found out about this film last year and was waiting to see it. It's accurate but appropriately cautious.
Very difficult to determine who invented it since hoops have been documented to be used as far back as the Egyptians. Hoop dancing is a big tradition among native Americans for example
She is in her nineties?? She looks amazing! No surprise a disshonest man took credit for something he didn't invent .... at least she didnt let herself become bitter & disillusioned about life.
She acts like she invented it, and she did not invent the name alone. But, she came to the USA, looks to have had a great family and life, so I am very happy for her.
They actually acknowledge her on the show the toys that shaped america on the history channel. So i guess this video is no longer relevant? Oh and she is actually listed on the Wikipedia page as well.
It's a good story but it isn't factual. Mr. Melin first learned of the hoops from his partner Mr. Knerr. Their AUS Toy rep sent them original hoops from Australia before her husband contacted Mr Melin.
It would be great if more hoopers went back to the eco friendly bamboo version. However some of them will tell you that the shape is isn't perfect. That's nature for you, always unique.
I'd be stoked to have a bamboo hoop but: A) They don't seem to be widely available, especially where I am B) I don't have much money (they'd definitely be more expensive than plastic) C) The hoop being too heavy would be too difficult to work with plus increased chance of injury D) Just because the bamboo hoop itself is more environmentally friendly, doesn't mean the process of making/transporting it is

She's not the first person to receive a hoop as a gift here either since Native Americans had them. She just gave it that name for Wham-O.
They should have followed up with who actually invented it in Australia

Thats what columbus did ? Whys he still get credit.

Beautifully filmed, sad yet encouraging story... "Happiness is the best revenge". Indeed.

This is awesome..
Congratulations women.

Interesting and unknown story. History is full of examples of peole getting credit stolen from them. There is no justice.
ask black people, they'll tell you.
@@PHlophe Best response on this post tbh. 🔥

She didn't invent it either miss bitter.

That's a very poor title. She admits only to naming the hoop.

mmhmm.. so this is what I look like hula hooping ;)

So you stole the idea from Australia and brought it to America and someone stole the idea from you? That's karma..
Intriguing women!

Go live in a eco friendly cave, and save the planet with no human advancement.
@@EarthSurferUSA Try this for human advancement, being a considerate human being.

Thank god. Now I can finally use a hula hoop without feeling sexually exploited by the (possible) male inventor.
Well technically if someone copyrights an inventions as their own...
