    good video. i was interested to see how the behringer DI held up, since so many people have asked if a cheap DI box is a as good as a more expensive one, but i've never tested anything in that price range. The differences don't seem nearly as pronounced as ones i've tested, but they're definitely there still. thanks for the video!

      Thank you very much. I did this review for myself firstly, because I could hear differences in sound, but not that clearly, so a spectrum analysis helped me a lot and I wanted to share my results 👍

  • @De50lat0r
    @De50lat0r 5 років тому +5

    Awesome review man! I love how you used the spectrum analyser, was interesting to see the similarities/differences in this way alongside the sound. I'm subbed.
    I don't notice any difference between the balanced/unbalanced outputs either, though that's expected unless you're running a 10m long cable at some point in the signal chain or playing live (usually a very electrically noisy place).
    I did hear a difference between the DI and the instrument though, and it seems the DI does enhance the sound slightly. Seems a bit louder and you can hear some more of the highs and upper mids.

      Hey thank you so much! The Voxengo SPAN is such a great free plugin, it really helps a lot to find issues while mixing. There's definitely a bit of difference between the DI Box signal and the INST input, but not everybody seems to hear it, especially above 10 KHz, lol.

    @5:35 instead of showing both signals, the better way is to invert one signal and mix with the other, that way you will see only the difference between both signals. They need to be at the exact same level for this to work properly...

    Great demo, I have both the country 85 and this and the sound is exactly the same in terms of d.i tone.....I recommend the behringer over the countryman due to that very reason, unless u want to re-amp, I get sticks and stones thrown at me for that lol.....my favorite unit to use for d.i guitar, synth and bass is the art tube mp/c....can be used a mic pre or d.i box and has a built in opti compressor that lets u use guitars with hot pickups and limits the clipping, like my di marzio x2n....there is even a +20 dB button, which is cool for solos

    I am actually pleasantly surprised about the relative little coloring of this pretty inexpensive DI. Good enough for live shows imho, and if you want to use it in your homestudio, just be aware of the coloring, try it and use it if you like the sound ;)
    (Nonetheless, it might be a little misleading or confusing for viewers to call the coloring of the sound of this DI ‘enhancement of certain frequencies’ , like it is a feature ;) A active DI needs to convert a unbalanced signal into a balanced signal and increase (or decrease) the amplitude, everything else it does is a weakness ;))

    Grazie per il video Alessandro! Ho giusto comprato la stessa DI ieri. Mentre aspetto che arrivi, ho una piccola perplessità. Possiedo 5 chitarre. 3 con i pickup attivi e 2 con i passivi (sebbene una delle due monti un Seymour Duncan Invader al ponte); come mi conviene gestire il segnale in entrata? Ok la catena "chitarra---->DI---->scheda audio", ma sulla scheda audio (oltre al phantom power per alimentare la DI) conviene tenere l'uscita Line o Instrument? E in caso di pickup attivi conviene usare il pad da -10db?

    • @AleArzMusic
      @AleArzMusic  3 роки тому

      Ciao! In linea di massima, la regola da seguire resta sempre la stessa:
      Pickup passivi --> INST
      Pickup attivi --> LINE
      Però, è anche importante sapere che tipo di potenziometro hai sugli strumenti (ad esempio io con degli EMG 808 ho i pot a 25K), la soluzione ideale è fare una prova prima a livello INST e poi a livello LINE e vedere quale delle due non distorce. Grazie del commento

    Great video, very well presented! I'm plugging my 2HH Strat directly into my audio interface and achieving a very clear sound when using low gain plugin settings. However when using high gain plugin settings I start to get hum and fizz. Would a DI box eliminate this or not?

    • @AleArzMusic
      @AleArzMusic  4 роки тому +4

      Yes if the DI box has a ground lift. The noise you're hearing could come from very different sources (jack cable, power cable, tv monitor, pickup shielding,...)

    • @AleArzMusic
      @AleArzMusic  4 роки тому +1

      It depends, there are many models out there. As a rule.of thumb, if you have passive pickups you need an active di box and viceversa. However, it may not completely solve the problem if the buzzing comes from between the DI box and the DAW.

    • @AleArzMusic
      @AleArzMusic  5 років тому

      Hi Kebz, thanks for commenting. Well, you could. As a rule of thumb, though, you use active DI boxes to balance a signal coming from a passive instrument source (passive guitar pickups for example). If you use active pickups, then you will need a passive di box.
      But for an external instrument, I believe that you could also connect it directly to your audio interface LINE input.

    Hi, this is a helpful review. Can I ask how does this DI box compare to a "Behringer DI400P"? Are they basically the same thing or is one better than the other? Thanks

    • @AleArzMusic
      @AleArzMusic  3 роки тому

      Thank you. They basically do the same thing: balancing an unbalanced signal, transforming an unbalanced jack cable into a balanced XLR cable. I'm not sure whether the DI400P has a ground lift button or not, but what could possibly change is the internal transformer: the higher the price, the better the quality, the lower the distortion (which however could be heard only at very high volumes). Hope this helps.

    Thanks for this video sir.
    I have similar DI box called Behringer GI100...
    I recently bought a guitar with EMG active pickups.
    I know the rule of thumb says Active pickups = Passive DI and vice versa.
    But since I only have this DI box, can I use EMG active pickups with GI100 active DI box and be fine ?
    Also, there is a switch on my Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2nd gen which says Line/Inst(high-z).
    If I'm using DI box with XLR cable, do I need to put that switch towards LINE side or INST side?
    If I put to LINE side, then signal drops too much and with INST side, I don't need to turn gain on interface. Some people say put the switch to Line, while others say put to Inst.
    Where do you think I must put that switch if using DI box with XLR?
    Thanks!
