  • This year, my goal is to play three miniatures games I've never played before. As the group has yet to meet in person, the solo game Rangers of Shadow Deep made the most sense to start with. I've been slowly building models and terrain to play through the first mission, and it's finally ready to launch.
So first, since the process is somewhat involved and because I also want to talk about the models, I'm going to go over my Ranger and Companions that I've created. This would be Tyrus Halperdirk and his party, which consists of Grundel Gracht the Templar, Phillipe de Gaston the Tracker, Patchy Jorvus the Rogue, Robert Renault the Swordsman and Kael Rexmaar the Man-at-arms.
Early in Tyrus's career he lucked into fortune and fame, which he used to secure a very comfortable life in the city. But now that the Shadow Deep has arrived, he's forced to take up the blade again, and is dragging along his old comrades, new friends, and any other adventurer or ruffian he can bribe, coerce or persuade to join him. After all, the sooner the Shadow Deep is defeated, the sooner he can get back to his life of parties and indolence.
Their first adventure will be coming soon. Leave a comment below if you have any questions, observations or concerns.

I can’t wait until you try out this warband!

Well, I’ve already played the first scenario, so my goal is to have that game report up this Friday.

Love all the backstories and movie references, I am excited to see the gameplay! Have you heard about Sellswords and Spellcaster Ganesha Games? it's solo and uses super basic terrain so it would not be too much of a time investment to put a game together, seems like a game you'd enjoy.

You know, I pulled up the rules and watched a couples videos on it just a couple days ago. It looks pretty good. I probably will try it out. If nothing else, I should have the models available.

reallylike your videos setup and pacing. i also like your musing over the characters and their short histories. not so much to be excessive, but enough to get a good idea of them. also like you writing out their equipment and stuff, really comprehensible. just really chill and enjoyable.

Thanks. Maybe I should have done that with the Path to Glory campaign. I’ll try to use this format again for the next campaign. Five Parsecs from Home, maybe.

Excellent video. It's great to hear all this detail. One of my favourite things about your videos are the close ups you do it makes the story more interesting as you can clearly see their faces and actions. Rather than just overhead shots which make it hard to see what is occurring. Also with your artistic skills have you considered painting side panels of forests, fields or towns to have in the background. Just some thoughts. Best wishes.

Thanks. Panels would be good. It would mean I wouldn’t have to so careful to frame my shots so it wouldn’t show my kids’ Legos. Of course, what I really should do is set up some decent lighting. But as lighting is neither model nor game, it’s hard to build up much enthusiasm for it.

I like to imagine the ranger is using his bow while still holding a lit pipe.

I like it. That way he can puff thoughtfully on it during very long range shots as he watches the arrow descend on his target.

If you hadn't already mentioned playing WFB or Mordheim I would have guessed by your WYSIWYG comments about your Ranger's equipment. I have a feeling my more lackadaisical methodology regarding minis would drive you bonkers. I literally just had to substitute a dual wield fighter for a 2h weapon user yesterday playing Frostgrave with my son. lol
I love your naming conventions btw. And dang your minis look amazing!

Thanks. And, no, WYSIWYG doesn’t bother me that much, though I try. But playing Mordheim for years I had to accept that between games on any particular night a fighter might lose an arm and buy a pistol.

Great video. Love the back stories.
I thought the plus 3 could not be applied to a skill that they already possessed??

Gah. You are correct. I had read that rule wrong. It means Patchy would have failed his first pick lock roll in that first scenario. Oh well. I’ll fix it moving forward.

where does it say if a ranger has 1 spell, he/she gets a magical item? I missed something!

A lovely bunch! I like the names too, many favourite characters, Tangled is a nice movie as are the rest. Saw Beauty and the Beast (the proper version! old one) in the cinemas.

Thanks. Speaking of Beauty and the Beast, some of the players in the Path to Glory campaign asked about the red cape on my Minotaur. I added it because I want my Beasts of Chaos army to have a “Beauty and the Beastmen” theme. They were an arrogant noble’s staff that were turned into Beastmen by a witch, and all the Minotaurs get The Beast’s cool red cape.

@@dmgashbad4908 Oh that´s brilliant! Now I have to look at him again! Love it! I kinda missed that detail, glad you pointed it out. :)
How´s Troll the Troll by the way? Almost stole that name but there is an old House here, House of trolle, so i call him "Trolle" (my Mordheim/Blood Bowl troll).
But Troll the Troll is so genious. It´s a troll, so doesn´t have to be too clever, yet it is..

@@dmgashbad4908 The Three Billy Goats Gruff
is really popular here, had it told many times as a kid.. Now I wonder if it was not an Ungor, Gor and finally a Minotaur, not three goats? ;)

I remember having a book of fairy tales when I was a little kid and being fascinated by the illustration of the troll in that story. I went and found a picture of it online. If you told me this was from an early Warhammer book I probably would have believed you.
