@@rainc5879 well I think even at age 37 hope had a ton of experience and character on goal, and her shape even if slower was way better than most goalies. She knew how to stay focused and in top form, she always made sure she was not benched by staying on het toes and mastering her craft. I am sure if benched unfairly like in 2007 we would definitely hear from her. She would let her opinion known and would be difficult to deal with in that scennario. If benched for fair reasons, we would ha e to see, because she never let her guard down or left doubt in any coaches mind that she was as prepared and sharp as she can be. I am sure she welcomes those challenges and would be working even harder to get her spot back as a competitor she is, in my opinion. Since she was let go when she was still in great shape (mistakes happen in goal to the best of us) a few mistakes (very few on goal - excusses) plus her comments and drama off the field but mainly her suing her employer, in this case the US Soccer federation made her a target. When you "take down" the leader, it demoralizes and gives the other players suing a warning or a "you could be next" message. Like a mafia thing.

I'm from Sweden and Solo was right. Sweden was playing like cowards, but of courde that's part of the game. You can win games playing like that and you play the way you think will work for you. Abby is wrong about "Sweden's always been playing like that". That is not true. For most Sweden's been an attacking team, but againt the US we knew we had to defennd and counter attack. And addition to that: Pia Sundhage was the head coach for Sweden. Since she was the head coach for the USWNT for so many years she knew exactly how to beat them.
I'm a big fan of Boxing and like the defensive and tactical style. But Sweden as a football team can play better than that. They can be aggressive and attack. It's more fun for all the viewers

It is a team sport. There are 11 players on the field. It is never just one person. They lose together and they win together. And yes while Naeher has to do her job in goal the defenders midfielders and forwards has do their job too. A goalkeeper is not going to be able to save every shot taken at them. Hope couldn’t save all the shots at the 2011 World Cup final when it went to PKs, but her teammates didn’t covert all their shots either. Again 2016 Olympics vs Sweden Quarterfinals. It went to PKs. Hope wasn’t able to save all of the PKs but not all of her teammates converted their PKs either. Hopefully this helps you understand that this is a team sport and it’s never down to one player. You try being a goalkeeper yourself and see how well you do.

I played futbol competitively, including goalkeeper (was nowhere near close to her skill level...wish I was though...but I know a keeper's mindset). So, I will agree that her attitude was probably improper, at times, and her alleged extracurricular issues caused distractions. You are correct. Additionally, there are always opportunities for reconciliation even if those opportunities fail. I have lived long enough to have experienced almost all that can be experienced in life.

Also, I accepted, admittedly reluctantly, that substitution Scurry for Solo during the 1999 final was based strictly on game personnel decisions. I've had to make some tough ones as a coach myself. However, keepers have to have a certain sense of "status" and "invincibulity" to have any chance to succeed leading a team playing this position. This can and does lead to bravado. I know, I needed to do some of the same. But...The USSF leadership could have used the assistance of Gulati (perhaps this would have failed...but something, try something...is my position). There have been other observers and analysts who have made similar suggestions. Please, your thoughts. Thank you. It's good to know there are reasoned observers like yourself. Please, any insights...I am a soccer /futbol coach and know the work and sense of jubilation (and "conquest") of having won a league champuonship.

Hope Solo the athlete doesn’t bother me so much. While it’s true that no one wants to be a sore loser let’s be honest. This is sports at its highest level and people need to understand that things are said that aren’t always nice. As a human I think she is who she is. She’s brash, unapologetic “in certain ways” and in your face. That doesn’t mean she’s a bad person. Hopefully in ten years her legacy is that of being a great goalie and not a dumb comment. We knew the deal when US kept Hope. She is who she is and that's not to mention on the field she is a rock star and a performer. Off the field she is a human being, she is brave and she is authentic on and off camera, she is no saint and we see it. She apologized and owned her mistakes publicly....Which is hard to do and takes balls. But all we want to see and all media wants to focus on is the drama she welcomed in her life. All I care about is how is this going to look in 10 or 20 years. Will she be the toughest golie in soccer history? Or the sore looser? Will she win the law suit? Is she going to be in the right side of history in the end? Is she the one that contributed to the biggest change in US women soccer pay structure? The one that had left that legacy? I really hope so.

@@rainc5879 well I think even at age 37 hope had a ton of experience and character on goal, and her shape even if slower was way better than most goalies. She knew how to stay focused and in top form, she always made sure she was not benched by staying on het toes and mastering her craft. I am sure if benched unfairly like in 2007 we would definitely hear from her. She would let her opinion known and would be difficult to deal with in that scennario.
If benched for fair reasons, we would ha e to see, because she never let her guard down or left doubt in any coaches mind that she was as prepared and sharp as she can be. I am sure she welcomes those challenges and would be working even harder to get her spot back as a competitor she is, in my opinion.
Since she was let go when she was still in great shape (mistakes happen in goal to the best of us) a few mistakes (very few on goal - excusses) plus her comments and drama off the field but mainly her suing her employer, in this case the US Soccer federation made her a target. When you "take down" the leader, it demoralizes and gives the other players suing a warning or a "you could be next" message. Like a mafia thing.

It is a team sport. There are 11 players on the field. It is never just one person. They lose together and they win together. And yes while Naeher has to do her job in goal the defenders midfielders and forwards has do their job too. A goalkeeper is not going to be able to save every shot taken at them. Hope couldn’t save all the shots at the 2011 World Cup final when it went to PKs, but her teammates didn’t covert all their shots either. Again 2016 Olympics vs Sweden Quarterfinals. It went to PKs. Hope wasn’t able to save all of the PKs but not all of her teammates converted their PKs either. Hopefully this helps you understand that this is a team sport and it’s never down to one player. You try being a goalkeeper yourself and see how well you do.

I'm inclined to think that that Solo was misunderstood. I played futbol competitively, including goalkeeper (was nowhere near close to her skill level...wish I was though...but I know a keeper's mindset).
So, I will agree that her attitude was probably improper, at times, and her alleged extracurricular issues caused distractions. You are correct.
Additionally, there are always opportunities for reconciliation even if those opportunities fail. I have lived long enough to have experienced almost all that can be experienced in life.

The USSF leadership, perhaps with the intervention of Sunil Gulati, even as an outside mediator could have been utilized as an option.
Also, I accepted, admittedly reluctantly, that substitution Scurry for Solo during the 1999 final was based strictly on game personnel decisions. I've had to make some tough ones as a coach myself.
However, keepers have to have a certain sense of "status" and "invincibulity" to have any chance to succeed leading a team playing this position. This can and does lead to bravado. I know, I needed to do some of the same.
But...The USSF leadership could have used the assistance of Gulati (perhaps this would have failed...but something, try something...is my position). There have been other observers and analysts who have made similar suggestions.
