SR-71 Blackbird - How to Fly the World's Fastest Aircraft

  • During the Cold War, the US Air Force operated the world's fastest air-breathing aircraft - the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.
    It was a plane which flew at the edge of space; so high that most other jet engines would seize because of the lack of air. A plane that flew so fast that its airframe heated and grew during flight. A plane that, if needed, could outrun missiles launched to bring it down. Amazing stories of the Cold War's ultimate spy plane
    The Lockheed SR-71 was a product of airplane maker Lockheed's Skunk Works, a secretive project which came up with some of the world's most advanced aircraft. It was designed after the loss of a U-2 spyplane over the Soviet Union in 1960 -- a plane thought to fly too high to be shot down. The Blackbird would fly even higher, and at speeds of Mach 3.3 it would be fast enough to outrun any missile fired at it.
    From 1966 until its last mission in 1989, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird flew thousands of missions around the globe, photographing military installations from China to Egypt, the Arctic Circle to North Korea.
    Colonel Rich Graham flew the Blackbird from 1974 until the mid-1980s, first as a mission pilot and then as a trainer. He later took command of all Blackbird detachments -- in California, Mildenhall in the UK and at Kadena on the Japanese Island of Okinawa.
    Here, he talks about what made the SR-71 such a remarkable aircraft to fly and operate.

    At every U.S. Air Force air shows in the 80s I took my boys too, there was usually a Black Bird on display and getting ready to take off. It was aways a thrill and a sense of pride to observe its power.

    I got to watch an SR-71 fly at an airshow at March Air Force Base when I was a teenager in the late 80's. I'll never forget it. Even below mach speed it was an amazingly fast & loud aircraft & sinister looking in sleekness.

Saw it coming in off Rt. 270 from West and did not know it set world record that day as I saw it angle for final approach but it stood out clearly and beautiful day. It was really coming in fast, and truly looks like something from outer space in real life.

    I heard a story that the people analyzing the images taken from the SR-71 had no idea what it was or that it even existed, but every image had a timecode at the bottom and covered like a kilometer. They thought it was a joke at first thinking there was no way an aircraft was going that fast to take those pictures.

    Something that MOST of us alive right now will never know is the REPLACEMENT for the SR71.. they SAY they retired it due to satellites etc.. cost of running the program. The thing is, NOBODY even knew the HABU existed until we TOLD them. Now they SAY they've retired the SR71 and went back to using U2? Really? If you believe that I have some ocean front property in Montana to sell you.

      The blackbird is like an officer who is subject to being called back in. I don't want to mislead or give up classified information but the government isn't stupid. The don't expect to fly this aircraft regularly but the have stock piled parts and fluids needed. The fuel is easily made and with synthetic oils lasts forever. I started flying during Vietnam and a couple of years ago ran into a younger woman that flew one stationed at Dobbins. Half of these that had problems were put in museums on loan but there are many in reserve hangars under ground. We have several secure bases that are far below the surface in every area of the country. Some other governments like Russia have the same capability. Not even the President us thoroughly briefed on what we have so to speak definitively would be in error.

  • @N0WYO1
    @N0WYO1 7 років тому +6

    These birds also leaked fuel as bad as a '68 pontiac. It's so bad that they have to be refueled after taking off. Everything tightens up when the plane reaches altitude and cruising speed.

    • @lykin9010
      @lykin9010 7 років тому +8

      They refueled after taking off because taking off with full fuel tanks was dangerous. All of the planes crashes were from tire failures. So they took off with as little fuel as possible to save weight, then filled up in the sky.

    The SR-71 is my favorite aircraft. Maybe not as heavily armed as the Eagle but it's gonna sneak up on them MiGs real quiet like and shoot them with its camera.
    My neighbor is an old F-4 Phantom pilot. He saw a little action in Vietnam. I keep telling him to write a book. He had his share of close calls and narrow escapes from MiGs.
    These are my 3 favorite aviation books:
    - The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman
    - Scream of Eagles by Robert Wilcox
    - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson

    Why does a plane that flies over 2000mph need missiles or bombs? No missile on Earth could catch it. Awesome.

    • @GrumpyIan
      @GrumpyIan 7 років тому +2

      pretty much, basically if they got a warning of a missile was being launched at them all they did was go to 100% power and basically walk away from the missile.

    • @dreadedjay1323
      @dreadedjay1323 7 років тому +3

      well if you can get all the information you need from satellite imaging, why would you need a plane that doesn't carry weapons or people?

    • @jrckabq4742
      @jrckabq4742 7 років тому

      Because satellite orbits are predictable and those that we want to take a look at can easily move/ hide or camouflage their assets from the satellite cameras and sensors.

    • @TheSwabbie
      @TheSwabbie 7 років тому +4

      Actually, nope.. not correct. The SR71 could NOT outfly missiles. The Russian SA21 flies at 3.3 Miles per SECOND.. the SR71 fastest speed is 3,300feet per second.. basically the SA missile is 3X faster. However, since the SR71 is so high it took too long for the SA's to catch up to and hit the plane. They also could NOT see it coming very easy either. But.. when the pilot did see a SAM launch it was serious thing. They pushed the throttle forward and just outran the missiles maximum distance..

    • @TheSwabbie
      @TheSwabbie 7 років тому

      No you can not. They know where ALL the satellites are .. and when they come over. The plane was an unknown .. they were idiots to retire it.

    Mig 25 still holds top speed over closed course, absolute altitude, and time to climb and 3 other. Still operational, 1300 units build, and would hold absolute top speed except it keeps climbing above mach 3 and would climb out of the internationally recognized course. SR 71 never flew over Soviet airspace.

      I have to agree with u on this Mr. Ben the SR-71 performance some it is still classified, just to go back what the pilot said they cruise at mach 3.2, as i understand it a plane cruising speed is not its top speed, cruising speed usually is 2/3 or 3/4 or even half of a planes maximum or top speed if am not mistaken, saying so its top speed is way above mach 3.2 ....imo

    But you must take the gas consumed in the aircraft into consideration. National finance will go to bankrupt soon.
