So when a dude in bib overalls attempts to be a cop and tells me that I am under arrest, I will think, “Emerald said this is what happens when an adult lets their persona take over their ego and now they believe they really are a cop”. 👍
Persona is the mask that we put on for the world. The ego is the mask we put on for ourselves. They’re both just thoughts compounded overtime. Great video ! 👍🏾
One of the main reasons that I neglected developing my persona was that I always thought it had to be dishonest. But now I realize the necessity of it and don't see it as dishonest anymore. Also thinking about creating my persona as a make-believe game gives me so much more mental freedom and comfort room to try things I always thought were not part of my personality. Like laughing at jokes even when they're not funny lol. Or smiling at people in general. Great video. Thanks for making this.
I'm flattered, but i must give credit where credit is do , I heard Paul Levy say something like this,, pls check him out, he has a new book release video up on UA-cam."Quantum revelation"". thx
Hands down best modern interpretation I have ever heard of Jungian psychology n archetypes. Reading/listening to Jung and other Jungians can be so daunting long term and this is so so refreshing! Thank you a thousand times. Please keep em coming.
Thank you so much for this video ♡ it explained why I was so upset and angry - I was walking around naked - didn't make new persona, I couldn't express myself properly. Oh everything make sense now.
"I am thou... Thou art I... From the sea of thy soul, I come... Come forth Arsene!!!" Btw, very great analysis on Jungian psychology. Very enlightening.
A great example of narrow persona would be Rhonda Rousey, she collapsed psychologically when she was defeated twice and her MMA career ended, her entire self image was that of a winner and the toughest female fighter then boom it was gone almost overnight and she didn't know who she was.
You explain Carl Jung very elegantly, Your analogies are great and paint the picture of the point your making A lot of things you said struck me on a personal level and I thank you for that 💪
This is deep and what I thirst to learn....Soo many people today are shallow and propangandized into being superficial, social media driven clones. I hate it...No self development at all.

Enjoyed the explanation. I used to have a lot difficulties with identifying too much with the persona. I`m such a complex creature, people around me get confused about how i behave from one situation to the next. I come across as introverted but then other times i`m extroverted. With age i accepted the many parts of me, and how to work with them.
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it. :) I used to over-identify with my persona in my late teens and early twenties. I was afraid of dying and being forgotten, which made me feel insignificant. So, the way I saw it, my only ability to live on in people's memories came from having a memorable persona. So, my main hope in life was to live a life noteworthy enough to make it into history books. That way, when I died I would still be remembered. And so I lived my life only for the legacy that I would leave after I died. So, I was extremely attached to my persona because I thought it was the only important part of me, and because it was the only way I could avoid insignificance.
I get what you are saying. Seems ppl. in general expect others to be set on one mode of being; acting and responding. I feel instead that my persona accommodates to ppl. and situations. My experience is that some ppl. see it as being "fake" only bc having more depth seems maybe threatening to some. Maybe they feel trapped, they themselves have to be fake and stay on one mode to satisfy their peers/family/church.
I just discover you. It seem I am little bit late to the party, but I loved this video too much to not say thank you! I will keep very close sight on your work. 😉
Helpful! especially the tips to make sure you have a healthy persona. I definitely found that I was a slave to my persona and creating a specific perception at all times. Thanks for explaining jungian concepts for a simpleton like me. I’d also love to hear more on shadow integration! 💖
Thank you! :) I'm glad it was helpful. I have a couple videos about the Shadow, if you're interested. One is an in depth explanation of the Shadow, and the other is about Shadow Work. One element that adds a tremendous amount of complexity to the generation of a new persona is that other people are perpetually projecting their thoughts of who or what you are onto you, which will cause you to reinforce your persona if those projections match or to destabilize the persona if they do not. This also mixes together with reputation to further create persona rigidity.
I've been feverishly researching both spiritual alchemy and Jungian psychology in an attempt to create a unique analysis of Neon Genesis Evangelion recently, due to a feeling that current analysis videos are missing something (It does not help that the series may as well be an ink blot test, with no true meaning to begin with, but I digress), and I have found your videos to be very enlightening, and much easier to comprehend than reading Jung's works alone. I do enjoy reading his work, but it would surly take almost 3 times as long compared to one of your videos to fully break down what he said. Atop of all this, I've found that I can apply a lot of the information to my own life, something I was startled to find I really needed to do. I myself made the mistake of conflating ego with persona years ago, while also constructing my persona based on something ephemeral. My first car was a 1989 Ford Thunderbird, and I was able to navigate high school quite comfortably with my leather bomber jacket and aviator clad car guy persona, despite my rather timid anime/video game based nerdy nature. Sadly, and inevitably, the car died, taking my ego, and sense of direction along with it. It's been 3 YEARS and I'm only just now realizing exactly why I've found myself in the proverbial frown town since. Talk about a face palm lol! Anyways, thanks for the comprehensive video series on jungian psychology, Its going to help me make one heck of a video analysis/research project! =D (hopefully)
Thank you for explaining this clearly without feeling any need to put a Tool song in the background nor having any trippy visuals accompanying what you said. I really dug this. :)
Thank you so much for making this content. I am from the clothing industry. And have been searching for words to explain soul clothes, and true styling. Although aligned to Jungian thoughts and inner work, never found such a simple, complete and subtle presentation on the same. More power to you.

Thank you very much this has been enlightening for me . I wish I had access to this when I was going through my formative years it would have helped me no end .my ego was not helpfull to me without a functioning persona .
An amazing movie that explores the role of the persona in the case of the person with an underdeveloped ego is The Talented Mr. Ripley with Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, and lots of other great actors. I don’t want to spoil any of it, but it is truly a must watch for anyone interested in Jungian themes. And anyone else, for that matter!
The Diamond Net great, someone on here that makes perfect sense. Thanks for the videos, seems like they could be helpful. That's a fascinating suggestion; to allow yourself to "play" out a persona. We seem to give up that willingness so early when we our role expectations start to harden in late adolescence. I'm also fascinated by the role social media plays in creating, maintaining or changing a persona,. particularly in the arts. I've been questioning my identity as a "musician" lately; when and how it started and why we feel compelled to maintain that identity.
+The Diamond Net As an INTJ female personality type, I just cracked this would be the way for me to finally have a social life... by creating a persona, I never actually did I only played with like a teenager and left it off. Now I see it is through the aspirational cognitive function or 4th which is Se indulgence for me. And the persona or subconscious side of the mind are the same cognitive functions as the Ego but flipped upside down.
I'm really enjoying the content you're putting out there. Going through a phase of enforced isolation from people so I can listen to myself and a lot of your content has been really helpful. Thank you
I love working with personas! I've been doing it for so long that I find it hard to alter them arbitrarily anymore, it always has to be for a transparent reason (such as shadow work), and that can be both really effective and really hard to deal with at times. My big thing lately has been trying to narrow in on a persona to give the most authority, as a sort of persona for when I'm dealing with myself. I understand that consciousness always exists outside of persona, as a sort of outside-looking-in perception that exists in the space between spaces, but at the same time I need to be using a persona to interact with the world and exert my will in any way, so I kind of need an image of myself to take charge when working internally, too. I'm still trying to develop him so he's the most fully integrated and all-encompassing self-image, but I think it's working so far.
I was into the Goth scene as a teenager as well. I was so Goth, I crapped spider webs! :P As I became an older teenager, I actually discovered I really like colour. I eventually made a style that combines black with cheery bright colors, that way I could have the best of both worlds. I realized I was too identified and was really restricting lot of pleasures in my life as a result of over personification of one specific thing.
Yeah... I was such a goth little shit INTJ girl before times. I actually cared about painting the interior INTJ heaviness, nervousness agitation and melancholy into the exterior... A really scary dark persona!!! Now I'm an ESFP bimbo (because INTJ's have ESFP personas or subconscious), and that is awesome because it works for me! People like it.
This is the main issue I am going through, and I am happy that this video is so well explained. Although still I feel like i need help but at least now I know what the issue is. I created a persona on purpose, but is broken after a trauma, so I rejected the person thinking that is all fake, a lie, and I also started wondering if the persona i made was correct or all is wrong. As in the video says, part of the persona i made is to be very alpha but failed to act up to the alpha way and now i am struggling with self loathing for several months.
Thanks for this video. I was reminded of when I spent time constructing my signature. How I use the bottom part of the capital L of my last name to underline the remaining letters like my 7th grade art teacher showed me. The flourish of the capital S of my first name. How I cross the t. Like the persona, my signature has changed over time bit by bit under my control from that several weeks of signing my name hundreds of times when I initially created it as a teenager.

Great content, very informative. I used to have problems investing in the development of a healthy, functional persona in the process of losing my identification with it.
That's been one of my struggles as well. When I had my experiences of ego transcendence, I tried for years to cease having an identity. That's because, I knew what I had experienced happened because my identity wasn't central in my mind. But I didn't know anything about enlightenment or anything like that. So, I did a lot of guessing and guessing wrong about what would lead me back to that state. So, even to this day, I have a knee-jerk habit of trying to invalidate anything remotely ego related. So, creating a healthy persona has been a lot more difficult for me since those experiences. But I'm trying to work past that tendency and to really drive it home that I shouldn't try to repress my ego because repression isn't the same as transcendence.
Yes. It can be difficult not only because of all the conditioning but because we need to actively invest time and effort to build a healthy/functional persona, so without detachment it's only natural that we give such high value to it and put it in the central stage. There is a subconscious belief in most of us that we would become totally dysfunctional, and thus bring a lot of pain to our lives, if we just drop it, if we let go of narrative, meaning, expectation, hope and purpose and it's funny because that's exactly why we get in our own way to bring the change that we desire, or at least that was truth for me. Like you mentioned, I used to believe that I was pretty much fixed with what I had and that was me, that was my authenticity. It took a long time to lose it's magnetism and the insights that you offer in this video are great to help in the shift of perspective where the Persona/Ego/Mind are no longer a source of identity but only a tool that is available in our human condition.
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” “There's no coming to consciousness without pain.” “Like plants, so men also grow, some in the light, others in the shadows. There are many who need the shadows and not the light.” “Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” “To be "normal" is a splendid ideal for the unsuccessful.” “If the path before you is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s.” “Where your fear is, there is your task.” -Carl Jung
Could you please create a video about "enantiodromia" (Jung defines enantiodromia as "the emergence of the unconscious opposite in the course of time). I love your videos !!
Thanks for your response. I watch your videos often and find them to show your brilliant understanding of Jung and of our conscious mind. I have been an English teacher for about 40 years, now retired from service. I share your videos with my former students. I have a suggestion for you to consider.....please pause during your narration as it takes time for your viewers to grasp your inputs. And modulate your voice and words a bit. This will help your viewers to pay better attention. I hope you don't mind be taking this liberty. Looking forward to watching your videos.
I think the persona is pretty much attitude with an outfit. I've been trying to work on my varying attitudes a lot lately, I feel the more consistently I have a positive attitude the better. Even if I'm in a sad situation like a funeral or hearing bad news I remind myself that nothing is permanent and everything is working towards the better. I still find that I can get caught in a bad attitude when I review my day and then I think about what would have been a better way to view the situation.
I am always reminden of Roger Smith from American Dad. I recently started to watch American Dad and was amazed to see many of Jungs' concepts in some of the episodes. (and someone still says "it's jst children's stuff" ... )
I'm in a perpetual existential crises of "who the hell am I???" I don't think being able to induce manic episodes helps that. With a few tweaks of the old chemicals in the brain, my whole personality and worldview and values shift. Lmao.
It's an important and not often talked about thing. I have a hard time with aging because being a young person has been core to my identity for so long (my entire life) and I have many attachments that stem off of that youth attachment. And the problem is that I feel rude asking older people about it (especially women), because it will come off as rude... mostly because aging is seen as bad in society. So, I feel like I have to stumble around in the universe and not know how the coming stages in my life will effect me psychologically and emotionally. And I'm turning 30 within the year! :o
wow,you just described perfectly the struggles I'm going through Emerald, bless your soul! My old persona is on life support,I kinda lost my ability to function in society now, even going to the supermarket is a big struggle trying to not look awkward and 'normal'.I have to wear that tired, faded thing everytime I go out. I've expressed so much of myself through my artwork, that I've outgrown that persona...it was just a typical nice guy, easy going persona, but not the real me.Just the limiting version of me. Thanks for the tips on how to sculpt a new persona! It'll be quite the challenge to scultpt a persona that expresses all the personality traits I have, perhaps humour can be one such technique to get the job done! btw...do you write? How do you express yourself? Conscious persona-sculpting,this'll be quite an exciting project! :)
I do not know how to express parts of myself that I’ve been conditioned to think it is socially unacceptable or like I feel so ashamed and disgusted with myself…
Here is an odd request that I don't do often. Could you address the use of social media in creating a persona in more depth? I'm quite introverted, and I'm noticing the trend of people (including myself) using social media to replace real time human interaction. We get to spend time deciding which face to put on, and the exact words to use to express ourselves more accurately. In real life, things are messy. Hair is messy. I stutter a lot. I spend a lot of time trying to remember that perfect word that I had just moments ago. My persona seems self-sabotaged and comes off as "flighty" or "awkward". Shouldn't we, collectively, be working more on these social skills, and less time on social media? Of course, your channel is the only one I would recommend spending more time on.😉
Your reflections on what society should/shouldn’t could be your inner guidance of your own next steps 🥰 Maybe play around with limiting or eliminating social media and take note of any changes in your life experience 🙂 Edit: oh my gosh I just realized you commented 5 yrs ago! 😂 Now I am curious about how things have changed.
Love your videos. I've started reading the Red book by Jung. I wonder of you ever played the Persona games , which are enterely based on junghian psychology?
I take a sludge-hammer to the persona. I realized that's a little dramatic or extreme, however, the finer the grains are the more moldable it is in my opinion and my imagination can run wild with it.
what if when you speak to others your not trying to project any (person image or person story) to yourself or to who your speaking to your just expressing yourself without any thought of how you look or how another will perceive you, is there a persona in that scenario?
So the trickster archetype would be one that kind of plays with different personas/impression management but is totally aware of the persona being persona?

Btw, very great analysis on Jungian psychology. Very enlightening.
"Thou hast acquired a new persona to overcome life's hardships."
"I am thou, and thou art I. From the sea of thy soul, I cometh... I am Orpheus, master of strings"
"I am thou, thou art i, thou hast established a new vow. It shall become the wings of rebellion that breaketh the chains of captivity."
You are so intelligent and articulate. You explain concepts intelligibly. Thank you.

Such insightful content! Amazing! The best channel for condescend Jungian material. Thanks!
Be yourself as much as you can and it is still socially working.
Thank you emerald. This video had put so many questions of mine into perspective!!

Great explanation. Thanks!
I like the way you speak..slowly so that everyone can understand what you saying and trying to explain...💕 I aint english speaking
Looking cool, Joker! 🐈
Great video, v informative and easy to understand! Thank you :)
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
“There's no coming to consciousness without pain.”
“Like plants, so men also grow, some in the light, others in the shadows. There are many who need the shadows and not the light.”
“Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”
“To be "normal" is a splendid ideal for the unsuccessful.”
“If the path before you is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s.”
“Where your fear is, there is your task.”
-Carl Jung
Amazing video. Thank you so much 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼💖💖💖💖
Great information in the persona... very helpful to me!
These are gold. Thank you for making this video.
Thank you! 😊
I am always reminden of Roger Smith from American Dad.
I recently started to watch American Dad and was amazed to see many of Jungs' concepts in some of the episodes.
(and someone still says "it's jst children's stuff" ... )
All good videos!
Love these videos. Thank you very much for the information you're putting out here!
great stuff.i like the calm straightforward approach . Thanks .
Very helpful! This is what I've been looking for but didn't know what's called, so thanks!
You're welcome! I'm glad that it helped. :)
Such a good explanation, thank you very much
I have studied Jung. Awesome.
Thanks for the video! I recently observed that my persona is blocking some of my inner motives., so this video was really helpful.
You're welcome. I'm glad that it was helpful. :)
i feel like people conflating their persona with their ego is REALLY common

Great vids on Jung, keep em coming :)
I'm in a perpetual existential crises of "who the hell am I???" I don't think being able to induce manic episodes helps that. With a few tweaks of the old chemicals in the brain, my whole personality and worldview and values shift. Lmao.
I also ask myself sometimes *Who am I? ''. It's like I don't know it anymore lol
Thank you
Great job
The point about age identification and not knowing how to be when older was great
It's an important and not often talked about thing. :o
Thanks Emerald, very helpfull !
wow,you just described perfectly the struggles I'm going through Emerald, bless your soul!
You are awesome.
That 'dang you' at the end
The persona protects the self
Of course, your channel is the only one I would recommend spending more time on.😉
Your reflections on what society should/shouldn’t could be your inner guidance of your own next steps 🥰
Maybe play around with limiting or eliminating social media and take note of any changes in your life experience 🙂
Edit: oh my gosh I just realized you commented 5 yrs ago! 😂
Now I am curious about how things have changed.
Love your videos. I've started reading the Red book by Jung. I wonder of you ever played the Persona games , which are enterely based on junghian psychology?
Thanks, I love all your Jung stuff :)
You're welcome! I'm glad you like them. I've found Jung's model of the psyche to be very relevant to my life. So, I'm glad it with others. :)
I take a sludge-hammer to the persona. I realized that's a little dramatic or extreme, however, the finer the grains are the more moldable it is in my opinion and my imagination can run wild with it.
Great video Emerald. Would you define persona as the outer manifestation of one's identifications?
My mind is blown
Thanks!
what if when you speak to others your not trying to project any (person image or person story) to yourself or to who your speaking to your just expressing yourself without any thought of how you look or how another will perceive you, is there a persona in that scenario?
*PERSONA!!!*
So the trickster archetype would be one that kind of plays with different personas/impression management but is totally aware of the persona being persona?
Yeah i think so
