Hades is a roguelike for roguelike haters

- It's not a surprise that Hades is Polygon's 2020 game of the year: even roguelike haters adore the game. So how did Supergiant Games make such an appealing game in such a hardcore genre?

If anyone was curious, "Simone" like they have it written in her god title would be pronounced about like Spmthpeh.
It's the sound you make when you try to say her name while eating a pomegranate.
Simone = SPHMTHPS
Brian = B(R)PHDP
Patrick = RLT(some sort of cyrillic R?)PH(C)K
Josh = (J)TH(S)E
Jenna = (J)SPPL

One of my favorite things in Hades is Zagreus. At first glance, from the color of his clothes and his relationship with his father, it can be easy to expect him to be just another edgy angry sasuke shadow the hedgehog. And then you find out he is genuinely just a very nice dude. Like aside from his father, he is very polite, sweet and kind to everyone. Even the first time he met Theseus he showed admiration and respect. And thats another thing. Zagreus isnt a goody goody, he will be a sassy bastard to people who deserves it. Mainly Hades and, after the first encounter, Theseus.
He's just a sweet boy who wants to see his mom and also slashes through hordes and hordes of the dead and is reborn from a pool of blood each time he is struck down and loves his partners and his dog
Well said! I mean, I think the idea is Zagreus was brought up *Prince* to the God of the Dead, so, that mannerism really shines through. It would've been so easy to just pidgeon-hole him into the rebellious spoilt kid stereotype, but, every time you gift something to someone... his genuine sincerity just touches my heart... and makes me question my own sincerity in my acts of kindness 😅
@@GoldGiggler thinking about it actually it makes sense that when so many people around him are powerful, temperamental gods and cosmic beings, that he learned to be respectful to most people he meets
@@fyrefrost1898 But he's even respectful to people he probably shouldn't be. Like Sisyphus. Zag is shown to be completely respectful and friendly to this damned soul, even before the events of the game. Even though Sisyphus is literally the Furys' whipping boy.
@@devinspencer1678 Idk if it has anything to do with it but ancient Greece did have the concept of xenia which means like you show politeness and hospitality to anyone you meet because they could be a god in disguise
Why is Clayton so good at simple phrases that make me deeply uncomfortable? I'm still not over "wet Journey", but "horny Tartarus" is up there.
horny Tartarus really got me - Simone
"Getting shwasty" just got me lol

I was wrong. Jenna made the hot Resident Evil vampire lady video and it was perfect
It’s also a great roguelike for people who love roguelikes!
It’s not a roguelike it’s a roguelite
@@KrakenG927 Rogue-lite is a sub genre for rogue-likes.
Or is it an action hack and slash game with randomisation and diegetic deaths?
@Lauffles Thats just the tip of the iceberg in terms of roguelike gatekeeping. There are many fans who whish that "Roguelike" were like their name, games that are like the game "Rogue", and those people do not like the way the term is used these days. It's kinda understandable that they're upset, but they still shouldn't be so gatekeepish
@@KrakenG927 roguelike and roguelite actually are the same genre. You’ll see both terms used to describe the exact same mechanics. Just depends on literally what name a dev decides to use.
im surprised they got through this video without mentioning what a perfect match greek mythology and roguelike gameplay is. everyone in hades is fully aware death is a mild inconvenience at best and as a result, the fact that youre dying all the time is woven into the narrative itself, it _is_ the narrative in a lot of ways, as opposed to just dropping you back at the start with little to no explanation
Ah, yes, SFMTHPS, the goddess of gameplay
AND WRFDP, the god of art.
Who could forget RLTRFSK, the god of narrative?
And of course no pantheon would be complete without IFSI, the god of sound and ISPPL, the goddess of death.

Hello my fellow Jenna Simps
So while we're on the subject of Hades' voice acting, can we take a moment to appreciate Avalon Penrose (the voice of Megaera) and how she has THE BEST voice of any human, alive or dead?
i haven't played yet but megara needs to be susan egan (meg in hercules and rose quartz in steven universe).. i am not accepting criticism at this time
My sister recently got a switch and I recommended Hades to her. She isn't as experienced as I am with video games so she was hesitant, but with God Mode she was able to enjoy the game at her own pace. Now she doesn't even need it anymore! Really shows that Supergiant wanted anyone to have fun with Hades
So if Clayton's very tired face isn't makeup, y'all should let him nap on the clock. And also take away his switch during nap time.
Also, BRIAN! I hope we still get to see him guest on polygon videos occasionally, he has great screen chemistry with the whole crew.

Not that you have to be a maths nerd to know who Pythagoras is, but it just... ripped a laugh out me (I'm just proving how good I am at overthinking things, don't mind me!)
There's no reason for the little cameos to make me this happy and yet: AHHHH
The rush of fear I felt when I saw "hades fan art" in that search box... those results could be pixelated for a lot of reasons, but I think we all know the real reason
i love that everyone is the god of something like art or gameplay but jenna (very fittingly, i might add) is just casually the god of death.
It's because Jenna's the only immortal on the team.
She did had stated in the past that she would win a fist fight against her co-workers so
I took two things from this:
"Horny Tartarus"
And
The fact that Clayton thinks Zagreus is a "bad boy" when this lad is kawaii on the streets and kawaii in the sheets. The only mean bone in his body is against the enemies. Zagreus is too polite
I think it's because the trailer makes him seem kind of cocky and disrespectful but in reality he would apologize to a boulder for being slightly too rude to it

There's something about the way Simone delivered those lines that make it so I could listen to them all day.
If this is Brian's last appearance in a Polygon video, well, that'll be just fine.
I also love the fact that hades is lowkey an interior design sim -- i ,,,,may or may not have spent a solid two hours at one point trying to find what combinations of decorations look best for the house (personally I'm partial to gold, bone, and elysian decorations)

I just want a Polygon mod of Hades now
this is a wonderful, informative, and persuasive video that has thoroughly convinced me to finally splurge on this game, and is also a really creative and cleverly formatted video essay that was extremely enjoyable and funny to watch. great job, clayton!
This has climbed the ranks and deposited itself in my top favourite polygon videos of all time. The editing is so good, I love the jumps between green screen to *green screen*, and the genius of having the other producers as the gods, especially since they went whole hog with the costumes and voice acting, was all extremely good. This kinda creative + informative shit is so good that it might just be the thing that finally makes me get Hades.
You love to see it.
i used to be a roguelike hater but Hades is now one of my all-time favourite games, it is so addictive
very happy to find out that pat has a sword
Is Brain's last canonical appearance on Polygon as a Greek deity? I approve.
This was an amazing video. Clayton has been knocking them out of the park lately.
So i guess this means everyone wanted to make a Hades video but Clayton got the spot
Those cameos are all GOLD, absolute GOLD. Big favorite was Pat lovingly cradling the 5ed DMG, for sure.
gameplay, art, narrative, sound, and *D E A T H*
Pat holding the DM's handbook is just... Fuck yes
One of the other things I like about Hades is it's niceness. Everybody is helpful and don't have hidden motives. In the beginning I thought Nyx must have orchestrated things to stick it to Hades or something, but no she is just a good mother trying to do what's best for he son.
This is the video that made me finally got me to Hades. I have done nearly nothing else for four days straight. Thanks Clayton!
This is officially my favorite polygon video of all time. I learned things and it’s so funny!!! Y’all seemed to have a great time making it!!!! Good work Clayton and team I love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so glad y'all finally made a video about Hades! It's definitely my favorite video game, and I've anticipated this video for long now!
Clayton videos are quickly becoming my favorite flavor of Polygon.
Also important to note about the marble statues, they didn't look like that when new, they were painted, it's just 2000+ years have passed and it's all gone
I love that, as the god of storytelling, Pat had a copy of the Dungeon Master's Guide with him. DMs truly are his disciples in storytelling
@3:56 I never noticed that, but would swap Pharah and Brigitte, so Team Half Smile is on the left, and Team Semi-Smirk is on the right.
8:58 Okay having the final fight against Hades be set in a snowy plain is SUCH a fun pun on the iconic 'It'll be a cold day in hell ... ...' line.
They did the impossible for me! They made me not care about dying! It helped me let go of my hate of dying and I've since played multiple other roguelikes!
It was nice seeing Brian again, if for a fleeting moment
Chaos is non-binary and I love it! Why would the creator of the entire universe be bound by genders? It both makes sense and is so damn inclusive. I love it.
The poc rep, lgbtq rep that evens included Non binary; and differentiating body shapes. It’s so gorgeous and one of my favourite things about this game.
Chaos isn't male or female in Greek either, so they just followed Greek tradition.

I agree, this was my game of last year. I've been a fan of super giant from the start and ive managed to meet a lot of the people at the studio. they are so incredible nice too, and Jen Zee's art style is one of my favorites.
This is an unspeakably good video. Y'all's content is always excellent, of course, but this is one of the very best I've ever seen.
Despite being trash for Polygon videos, I do not really play videogames, primarily because I have too many other interests that already vie for my time and energy and money. But I became completely enamoured of this game during the Polygonathon, and decided I was going to have to play it someday. So thank you for the perfect concise little package of reasoning to present my family when they question why I've bought a Switch.
We're glad you enjoy the videos even if you don't play many games!! We try to make our stories interesting and accessible regardless of gaming experience, so it's nice to hear that it works for you. :)
I've been deliberately not starting this game while I still have literally any extant to-do list. I know once I do it's all over.
This was a PERFECT concept for a video--as soon as Simone showed up and I realized what was happening I was so excited to see how the rest played out! Clayton nails it again!!!!
one thing I wish this game had was a way to rig what boons you get as a different mode, because sometimes I wanna do that perfect theory craft build Ive been thinking of and not get the same only the boons that dont synergise with my build (and yes I know you can reroll and use trinkets but I wanna be able to fully rig it sometimes)
i was just watching the noclip documentaries about Hades and now polygon has a video about it too. So now it feels like when I'm not playing Hades, I'm watching videos about it.
(always get divine dash.)
I don’t want to be that guy who says “Oh hi Brian” cause he’s the only reason I started watching Polygon and now I’m still watching Polygon and it’s great and Brian has his own channel and is having fun there and I shouldn’t feel this slight melancholy, but...
Oh hi Brian.
It's the little things like the greek alphabet, the iconic still images that come out of Clayton's exhausted psyche and the interesting narrative structure that makes these videos so fun to watch. Even separated by quarantine, y'all still manage to make cooperative videos in some truly clever ways. Missed opportunity making Karen the goddess of death, tbh. Still, awesome job with this one, Polygon. ~Lethargy Incarnate Azizi
As somebody who has played hades more than any game in the last five years... you are very correct
This is so well done, I love this review Clayton! Also, the cameos were an excellent idea too hahahah
You guys captured exactly why I can't stop playing this incredible game!!!
Yo, that bit on God Mode where the dude got to Styx on his second run...that's actually really impressive.
The cameos are perfect
Cerberus is the reason why
shoutout to Clayton's dedication to the bit of being sleep-deprived by looking like he actually has stayed up all night (and possibly multiple). if it wasn't intentional.... please nap, my dude.
Super Giant's art style is so unique and beautiful. It's hard to believe Bastion came out 11 years ago! And it's still one of the best looking indie games of all time because of that art style and it's gorgeous fluid and characterful animation. Not to mention the voice acting.
Once again even after all the reviews I've seen it's still polygon that actually convinces me to get the game. Frankly, this is the madness I crave
I actually paused the video to grab my switch because you were giving me the Hades itch, crab- I mean Clayton
Brian appearing gave me whiplash.
Y'all went the extra mile for this video and I love it
I had to remap all the buttons, I unmapped directional buttons, and mapped the menu junk to those things. Anything where I require action, I wanted to make sure i could hit any button combo at once, so I use X and Y for regular and special attack, ZR for Cast, L for Dash and R for call.
This video is so well-constructed I can't stop rewatching it!!
currently taking a break from Hades, which I was playing to avoid grad school
edit: extremely good vid!!!
i love the cameos lol such a creative video 10/10
this is really good Clayton!!
I don't know why even the subtitles describe it as a "*painfully awkward pause*" but I am grateful for such.
I usually like roguelikes for like maybe a couple weeks tops but usually fall out pretty quick. But I think what Hades has that's kept me gripped is how involved the story is and how it always feels like you're making progress even every time you die
since the characters will comment on things from your previous run and there are a lot of plot threads that Require You to die multiple times just to keep talking to these people it always felt like a Fresh Experience
Fantastic video! I was feeling the same resistance to rogue-likes you describe here, but I've loved Hades so far.
